I come to ask for some advice, but first let me introduce my deck before I ask questions. But even before that let me specify what I mean by randomness as I will talk about that quite a lot. As you all know there are tons of viable strategies in Legacy, but a few stand out. Those decks can be found in the Decks to beat forum, all the other decks and archetypes I consider random (and even some decks in the DTB forum are not played very often, thus also random).
Personally I really, really liked a deck Richard Feldman and Zac Hill created called TrinityRock (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5827&highlight=feldman). This deck was created for the GP Columbus metagame back when Flash was all over the place. This deck hated out Flash as well as the decks that preyed on Flash, namely Fish. As of now the deck unfortunately has become obselote, but I really liked some of the ideas. I tinkererd around with the deck and got to Elf Stax, I'll spare you the entire process and get right to the list.
Creatures:
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Fyndhorn Elves
4 Skyshroud Poacher
3 Deranged Hermit
1 Viridian Shaman
4 Imperious Perfect
Artifacts:
4 Tangle Wire
4 Smokestack
4 Trinisphere
4 Umezawa's Jitte
Land:
4 Wasteland
12 Forest
2 Pendelhaven
2 Mishra's Factory
4 Ancient Tomb
Sideboard:
4 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Tormod's Crypt
2 Viridian Shaman
4 Choke
1 Elf Replica
I'm not sure wheter an explanation about how the deck works should be given here, as it's pretty self explanatory. You pump out threats and try to buy time by locking the opponents mana out. Smokestack and Tangle Wire also happen to work very nicely with Skyshroud Poacher and Imperious Perfect.
The deck has been performing decent against all sorts of blue based, which tend to be quite vunerable to all the huge threats and the manadisruption this deck presents. But I tend to struggle with randomness. If an opponent plays Aether Vial, token producers or Pernicous Deed all of a sudden Smokestack and Tangle Wire just become dead meat, and I just lose.
It's quite ironic actually, my matchups against the Tier 1 decks seem to be good while the matchups against the lower tier or random decks seem to be quite bad. I've got 2 questions about this and I'm not sure if those can even be answered but please speak out and give me your thoughts.
- Is there anything that I can do to protect myself against randomness? I mean I can't run Force of Will or just not interact with this deck as ways to avoid randomness. Is there a way for me to beat randomness while not resorting to FoW or combo?
- If the answer to question 1 is no, is it even worthwhile for me to keep trying to find a deck that really stands out while interacting with other decks and not using Force of Will (I truly dislike blue AND combo, can't help it)? I mean with the metagame being so broad, is there a way to create a deck that consistently puts up great numbers while still interact?
Also, advice on my deck is appreciated as it's clearly not optimal yet.
