View Full Version : Mistbind Clique and Swords

So, I had a situation come up in MWS that I want to be sure I'm understanding correctly. My opponent played a mistbind clique, wanting to remove a mutavault. Since Champion is a triggered ability, it should go on the stack. Then with that on the stack I play swords to plowshares targeting the Mistbind. With the remove mutavault on the stack, Mistbind Clique should leave play and trigger the second part of a Champion ability, but doing nothing because nothing has been removed. Then the first part resolves and mutavault is removed from the game, then my lands remain untapped.
Does this logic follow?

I think not, the clique is not in play when the faerie is championed so there is nothing that knows that the clique in play accually had the triggered ability.
Champion a Faerie (When this comes into play, sacrifice it unless you remove another Faerie you control from the game. When this leaves play, that card returns to play.)The mutavault does not get removed until the whole champion ability resolves, and since it does not target the mutavault there are no tricks that way. Also, since the "When this leaves play..." part is included in the champion ability which all resolves simultaneously the mutavault would return if you swords after the champion resolves and the mutavault would not be removed at all if you swords before (he can choose to sacrifice the clique and since it isn't in play anymore it has no effect).
Since you let the clique resolve, the 'comes into play' effect still triggers and your lands are therefore tapped. Edit: I need to RTFC... see below
The reason he does not have to remove a creature if it's not in play when the trigger resolves, but your lands still get tapped, is because he can choose the sacrifice (of the clique) option instead of the removing.

clique does NOT have a 'comes into play trigger' referring to tapping the lands, clique has a 'whenever a faerie becomes championed with this permanent, tap the lands' triggered ability. Little different

My apologies, I thought it was a come into play ability. I read the champion part but didn't bother with the rest, how dumb of me.
Your lands do not become tapped if it is worded that way.

Okay thanks. I guess I just didn't read the help text well enough =P With the either/or they don't have to choose beforehand.
