I'm sure i've asked this before, but it might have been of a judge in real life and not on here. Frankly i tend to trust the rulings here more. I tried finding a thread with both grip and LED in it, but none seem to ask this question.
If i Grip a LED, can opponent use the LED's ability in response?
Yes, because its a mana ability.
No, because LED sais "only when you can play an instant", and with a split second on the stack, you cant play instants....
So which is it?

Yes, you can crack LED in response to Grip, because it is a mana ability.
From SCG's Ask the Judge:
Q: Can a Lion's Eye Diamond be cracked in response to a Split Second spell? I think it can, because it's still a mana ability, but you can't actually play instants during that time.
A: Yes, you can still use the ability of Lion's Eye Diamond when there is a Split Second spell on the stack. As you pointed out, LED's ability is a mana ability, and Split Second does not prohibit the use of mana abilities. Lion's Eye Diamond's ability has a restriction that you can only use that ability when you could play a instant, but that does not matter. You may not be able to play an actual instant when a Split Second spell is on the stack, but that is because you are prohibited from playing spells.
*edit* That literally took me 10 seconds to find....

Thanks Moose.
I apreciate the answer, but considering how many times i've encountered SCG's Q/A having blatantly wrong answers (due to card/rule changes mostly), if someone could confirm this answer, i would much appreciate it.

It's right. The rule for split second:
502.58a Split second is a static ability that functions only while the spell with split second is on the stack. "Split second" means "As long as this spell is on the stack, players can't play other spells or abilities that aren't mana abilities."
LED is a mana ability, and Split Second doesn't prevent you from playing mana abilities, even if you could only play them any time you could play an instant (and technically, in response to a Grip is a time when an instant could be played, if split second wasn't preventing everyone from doing so).
