So, I was there at the German Legacy Champs 2008 in Hanover and got 10th out of 146 Nerds. I played my petdeck, UGw Threshold.

Round 1: Till Micheler with Death 'n' Taxes

In the first 3 Turns I assume that he is playing Stax because of Wasteland on my Tropical Island and Flagstones of Trokair, but when he tried to play Samurai of the Pale Curtain, I daze it and decide NOT to Brainstorm-Fetch away my Counterbalance Engine and lock him away after I revealed a Oblivion Stone for Mangara when Balance was still blind. Lucky me.

Game 2 I fail to resolve some critters and I am 1 turn too slow. He races me with 3 (!) Serra Avenger.

Game 3 I locked him again with CB-Top after I played Needle on Aether Vial on which he was relying. The only lands I see on his side are Plains and Port,
but then he is on the safe way to lose.

2-1 Win, 1-0-0

Round 2: Christian Schäfer with The Perfect Loam/Eternal Garden

Game 1 takes like infinite time, I could not find the 2nd Pithing Needle to shut of those fucking Maze of Iths. I eventually found them, but 1 turn to late. I get fucked by Ghost Quarter and Tabernacle.

Game 2 was also very time-consuming, but I have CB-Top and 2 needles on Wasteland and Ghost Quarter. With a Oblivion Ring on Top I counter about 5 Spells (Crucible, Witness, Predator, Propaganda, Trinket Mage). He is out of gas and only draws lands, but has got a Zuran Orb, 2 Explorations and a Crucible in play already. I have 2 Goyf and 1 Enforcer and he has got a shitload of lands, 3 Mishra's Factory and 1 annoying Tabernacle at Predrell Vale.
Since those 3 Mishras can race me, I don't attack for about 12 turns and he has also nothing to do but to gain 4 or 6 life per turn with his boardposition.
I only need my fucking 3rd Needle which I obviously boarded in.

But then, when there were about 7 minutes remaining, he began to do this in EVERY EOT-step of mine:

1) Activate Mishra A
2) Activate Mishra B
3) Activate Mishra C
4) Mishra A pumps Mishra C
5) Mishra B pumps Mishra A
6) Mishra C pumps Mishra B

In this time, 3 judges gathered around us and were observing the whole thing.
I rip Wheel of Sun and Moon from the top which shuts off ALL his stupid recursion-engine-shenanigans and decide to dig for the 3rd Needle because I have to try it to win. I am successful, play Needle. He sacrafices all but 6 lands (3 and Mishras) and so I say "Mishra" and swing for 18, for 18, for 18 and in the 3rd Extraturn, he's done for it.

So it's 1-1, 1-0-1.

But some minutes afterwards, a Judge approaches and tells me that they are going to DQ my opponent for that Mishra-EOT-pump-gayness and that they will give me the 2-1 Win. I have to write a statement and get the 2-1 Win.

-> 2-1 Win, 2-0-0

3. Round: Manuel Faber with UBw Faeries

I hardly remember anything of this match, I only see Ruins, Shackles (-> solved my Pithing Needle) and some Vendilion Cliques that die immediately due to StoP in response to the CiP-trigger. I counter a Bitterblossom and have the biggest Goyfs ever seen.

Game 2 he seems to be screwed or flooded, I don't know, but I manage to bait him with Geese and resolve some Tarmogoyfs again which are larger than Faeries. I remember him having 5 mana, but EOT playing Enlightened Tutor for Chrome Mox (only 1 mana open), activates SDT and in response I play Predict and mill his Mox away. He scopps afterwards.

2-0 Win, 3-0-0

4. Round: Peter Hauck with RBg Vialgoblins

I know him from Hassloch and he has somehow got the routine to bash by head in with 2-3 Warren Wierding in a row.
But this time I have ALL my removalspells and soem counters, so I can also prevent him from recovering with Wort, Boggart Auntie. Enforcer beats him withing 3 Turns.

Game 2 I have even more removalspells (BEBs ftw.!) and more critters online. I Krosan Grip his Vial on which he was dependant and he has only got Mountain and Port. So he loses against 4 green men.

2-0 Win, 4-0-0

5. Round: Marius "wasteland" Hausmann With UWb Landstill (what else?)

Game 1 was sooo fucking close, I could manage to get some serious pressure after countering 2 or 3 Standstill or so and also managed to find my 2 Rings against his 2 Humilities. He tried to blow away my Goyf with 3 WoG (I daze 2 of them, I could not prevent the 3rd one) and then runs out of gas. Additionally, i resolve CB-Top while he has got 0 handcard. He draws ENGINEERED EXPLOSIVES and blows away my 2 Rings, getting 2 Humilities back. I scoop since I will now eventually lose.

But he really crapped his pants :-P (Quote him: "Phew. Frankly, you have been the best Threshold player I've ever seen by now.")

Game 2 I assemble CB and Gaddock PLUS Needle on Mishra, but I was still a littlebit pissed from Game 1 and forgot to stack the top cards with Ponder properly. So he simply plays StoP to handle Gaddock. -.-
And afterwards, he screwed me with his 1-of Dust Bowl.

2-0 Loss, 4-1-0

Whatever, Landstill is a match I may lose, but game 1 was still the bitterness.

6. Round: Christoph Weitkamp with UBg Faeries.

Last year I saw him playing Cephalid Breakfast and some months before I saw him on the 1st place at some random tourney with Aggroloam. So I keep a hand with CB-Top, Goyf, Ponder, Lands. But he does like 2nd turn Bitterblossom against which I somehow lose. Busted.

But I win Game 2 and 3 since I have Krosan grips against his Bitterblossoms and Counterbalance-Top for everything else. I also didn't saw any creatures but 1 Spellstutter Sprites and some Goyfs I counter. 7/8 Goyfs finish him off.

2-1 Win, 5-1-0

7. Round: Simon "Van Phanel" Ritzka with Solidarity

This was my personal waterloo that day. He is afraid of the matchup and offers me a draw, but I refuse since I am confident about the matchup. I was overconfidant.

Game 1 I have Counterbalance-Top and a Goose. But I fail to get Threshold because I've drawn crap like Needles and StoPs and additionally, he baits me with Turnabouts. I am stupid and counter them. The he goes Cryptic Command -> Win.

Game 2 I didn't mull and only had lands and critters.

2-0 Loss, 5-2-0. I did everything so wrong, I'm such a stupid retard...

8. Runde: Pascal Tschirner with RB Goblins

Game 1 he keeps a hand with a lot of Piledrivers and nothing else. I have enought removal for his Warchiefs and I ramp up to 6 mana and remove his last 2 Goblins with double-Ring and swing for 15 or so...

Game 2 I kept a way too reactive hand. i had like INFINITE Forces and Blasts and also all my Needles, but I only saw 1 Enforcer which gets fragged by a Warren Wierding.

Game 3 I have one big Enforcer and he has got again only a few Piledrivers.
With Enforcer on board, he plays Magus of the Moon which i ignore since I have the 6/6 Flyer. The next 3 draws were: Force, Blast, Blast (I already have the Island). So I really ignore it. He beats me with 1 lonely Piledriver and tries to resolve a Earwig Squad. With Badlands and Magus of the Moon in play. I then realized that he colorscrewed himself and beat him down. After the lethal damage resolved, he dropped his 3 card onto the table and extends his hand. I see 2 Squads and Warren Wierding. Colorscrewed HIMSELF, haha.

2-1 Win, 6-2-0

So I have 18 points and end up on place 10. Chris "Windux" Wilczek was on place 11 with ITF. He too ended up 6-2-0.

Although I fucked up 2 games, at least I didn't made any other faults in other games.

Well, so here's my list, I did not post the boardingplans since they should be obvious:

// Lands
4 [ON] Flooded Strand
4 [B] Tundra
1 [A] Island
4 [B] Tropical Island
4 [ON] Polluted Delta

// Creatures
4 [OD] Nimble Mongoose
4 [FUT] Tarmogoyf
2 [OD] Mystic Enforcer

// Spells
4 [MM] Brainstorm
4 [NE] Daze
4 [AL] Force of Will
4 [B] Swords to Plowshares
3 [CHK] Sensei's Divining Top
3 [OD] Predict
4 [LRW] Ponder
3 [CS] Counterbalance
2 [10E] Pithing Needle
2 [LRW] Oblivion Ring

// Sideboard
SB: 1 [CS] Counterbalance
SB: 1 [10E] Pithing Needle
SB: 3 [LRW] Gaddock Teeg
SB: 3 [TSP] Krosan Grip
SB: 4 [B] Blue Elemental Blast
SB: 3 [SHM] Wheel of Sun and Moon

-> such a nice, pimp and strong deck. But I am still a retard. I could have easily go Top8 if I did not screw up the game against Solidarity or simply accept the ID.

Here a link to a compact coverage and Top8 lists:

http://www.planetmtg.de/articles/artikel.html?id=4288

Alex "mackaber" Mack went Top8 with a slightly modified build of BreathWeapons TarmoTog.

By the way, I won 6 Lorwyn Boosters... trash.

But overall, it was a good metagame, not influenced by any hypes and therefore balanced.

So Team SPOD's breakdown was:

10th Adan (UGw Gro): 6-2
36th Der_imaginäre_Freund (Loam): 4-2-2
53rd Locutus (Goblins): 4-4
85th DerHeiler (Rock): 3-3 drop
106th Yulyn (Aggro Loam): 2-6
119th spiritofthewretch (Rifter): 1-2-2 drop
140th ChefKoch (Pile): 0-3 drop

People who joined us on our "journey":

65th Brehn (Fetchland Tendrils): 3-4-1
69th MasterC on MTGSalvat (DStompy): 3-3 drop

Congrats on your 10th position, too bad you couldn't make it to the final cut. It is good to know, though, that it was only a small gameplay mistake (and not the deck being overpowered by opponent) that stopped you from winning

Do you feel that Needle was more useful than EE? Do you advocate for EE (MD / SB)?
Would you say that 1 basic was enough? Is German meta light on the mana denial/moon effect?

Phew.

Ok, the reason why I play maindeck Needle or why it is played maindeck in general) is because UGW has mainly got a bad matchup against control-decks like Landstill and ITF as well as against decks like Loam.

And against those decks Needle is way more effective than Explosives since Needles are also the most proactive card you can play that is also good against topdecks. It's also insane against Goblins and can also ruin manadenial plans of the opponent. I don't know how many Goblinplayers kept a hand with Vial and 3 Wastelands... Needle on Wasteland and Force on Vial, gg. If used in that way, Needle simply manafixes you. That is superb and I don't have to run nonblue lands which have got a antisynergy with CBalance and Daze.

Concering the metagame, I guess Germany is light on Dragonstompy, but AggroLoam is quite popular (I also ask myself why no one is playing it in the states, it's a solid, strong deck with a good matchup against Landstill).

When I am playing UGb Threshold, I will definitely play against either Affinity or some randompeople with Tombstalkers, it's always like that. And goobafish's tempobuild has got a different concept and is therefore strange for me to play. So I played UGW because it is - in my opinion - the most flexible build available. 5color Thresh could behave similar, but I guess I would not have had a chance against that Loampile and a slightly worse matchup against Goblins due to the lack of Needles and increased lifeloss.

What is with the Oblivion Ring? Just another piece of all purpose removal? Ever wish they were spell snare or stifle or something?

Big Congrats on your 10th place! (I was watching the Standings right after they were posted on PMTG and immediately thought "wow that was close for Adan")
I'm also really amused that it was Christian Schäfer who did that thing with the Factories :)
I seriously need to spent some money to start playing again ;)

They are like on-color Vindicate which removes things from the game (that's huuuge!). It acts as an out for Humility, can be amazingly good on top of the library with CBalance out and costs less than 50 Cent... well, except if you want asian ones that you have to buy on eBay. It has turned out to be a very versatile card, I never had to worry about resolves Aether Vials or Humilities preboard. Or Bitterblossoms or Counterbalances. It handles so many stuff you would have to worry about or stuff you would scoop against preboard if you would not run them in the maindeck.

Stifle: No. Everything Stifle could handle is already solved by Pithing Needle.

Spell Snare: I am not really convinced by it, it's not as flexible as Oblivion Ring.

In the past I always tended to play Repeal instead of the Rings (but that was obviously back them when Oblivion Ring was not printed yet) and it was already quite good since C-A-L and Enchantress with their annoying Solitary Confinement were an issue. But Repeal needs a setup and a good timing so you can bounce and then counter the threat, but Oblivion Ring simply removes it and then you don't have to worry about it anymore since no one actually plays maindeck Enchantment removal (except in the states where everyone is maindecking Krosan Grip against incredibly bad decks like... Dreadstill, rofl. But Oblivion Ring would get the job done in a similar manner).

But I'd recommend all of you guys to stick to Krosan Grip because it's incredibly strong against Dreadstill and Vialhorror

No, but really, Krosan Grip could be another flexible card which you COULD theoretically play in the slot of Oblivion Rings, but Oblivion Ring also takes care of Creatures. Well, on-color Vindicate as I said.

@SilverDragon: Eh, you are broke??? Is that the reason why you haven't been at the last 2 Hassloch tourneys? What a pity. I'd like to see someone competent playing Stax, Oliver Salten is just a HORRIBLE Stax-pilot. ;-)

Yes, it's funny that it has been Christian Schäfer. But he has still got my playmat which he borrowed from me. I guess he has to burn his own one now because he has written "Stalling = Cheating" on it with a Edding (that's by the way the German Sharpie equivalent). Ironic, isn't it?
