View Full Version : So, how's the Legacy metagame looking at this point?

Soooooooooooo, it's been quite a while since I've played Legacy or even Magic in general, on account of my extreme dislike of Tarmogoyf's dominance in seemingly ever format not called Vintage. I see that bastard of a card is still around, and though I realize it's not exactly what you could define as broken, that doesn't change the fact I despise it and wish it were banned simply because of how much it pisses me off. But, moving away from that tangent, I'm curious as to how the metagame has developed since the introduction of Tarmogoyf. Last time I played Legacy to any sort of significant degree, the community has just gotten over the whole Flash debacle, and the decks to beat were Thresh, Gobblins, Loam, Dragon Stompy, and Goyf Sligh. I can see what's on top of the metagame currently in the Decks to Beat subsection, but, that doesn't really tell me how the format has evolved to the point it's at.
Also, Jack Elgin's back from the military? Holy shit, I didn't think I'd see him pop his head around The Source again at this point. Get back to developing Wombat and Quinn, damnit!

Landstill, Loam, ThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThresh, Dreadnought, Goblin and even Painter are decks that must be looked over when playing at a competitive level. Also, not forget about combo : TES, FT.
I never believed Dragon Stompy nor Goyf Sligh to be decks to take account of at major tournaments. Yes, you have to be prepared for Moon effects, but those decks (Stompy) are inconsistent, and can be neglected. As for Goyf Sligh, if your deck has CB/Top or a fast clock, you should be able to win that match easily. Ichorid is one of the deck that pisses everyone off, but is not that played, because of the hate and all.
I am not sure what you want to know...
Counterbalance and Sensei's Divining top (CB/TOP) have helped many decks since the Flash fiasco. It is now an integral part of ThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThresh. It also made decks like It's the fear possible, and any Dreadnough based deck also uses CB/top as a main control element.
Thoughtseize, as a replacement of Duress, has made many decks stronger. Many argue that UGB ThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThresh is the best because of both dark confidant and thoughtseize. But results tend to prove that UGW and UGR are more played.
Landstill was somehow revived. The deck never really died, but people kind of forgot about it for a while. Landstill is one the decks that is the less affected by the Counterbalance/top combo. This is one of the main reason, i believe, that made Landstill a good choice to fight ThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThresh and other blue based control decks. Whether you play UW landstill (Humility, wrath of god, decree of justice) or UGB (W or not) for Pernicious deed, Landstill is beginning to be more popular because most of his removals are bombs again aggro and aggro control deck(Humility/WoG/Deed/EE) and because it can ignore CB/Top
Phyrexian Dreadnought become a very big and successful archetype. The deck is based around Stifle + dreadnought, but also utilize the best countermagic available in the format : FOW and CB. The deck also uses effective mana denial spell : Wasteland and Stifle effects to slow down opponents or to mana screw them.
Painter's servant deck was made possible with the printing of Painter's Servant in the last set. Shadowmore i believe. The combo is based around Painter's Servant (all cards in hand, deck, grave, become the chosen color, as an addition to their other color) and Grindstone (an artifact that make opponent to throw the top 2 cards of his deck into graveyard. If the two cards match in color, repeat the process). The deck is powerful because it uses Red Elemental Blast, Pyroblast, FOW and even CB/Top as protection spells. When painter's servant in play, those blast act also as Vindicate, because you can destroy permanents. More over, this deck is capable of supporting Blood moon, magus of the moon, as a secondary way of slowing/beating opponent. With the recent "discovery" of Imperial recruiter (as a way of getting a creature in the deck), the deck has gained some major boost and is now considered as a deck that must be watched. However, due to the price of Grindstone and Imperial Recruiter, the deck is not the most popular
Goblin is as old as the format :) But because of Tarmogoyf, the deck has seen less play, imo. I dont see that deck as often as before.
Loam deck has an incredible match against ThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThresh. Because of that, the deck is a very good choice, in the current metagame. However, the deck can still struggle against combo, but combo struggle too much against control deck to be played alot.
As far as evolution, that's how much i can think of.
oh and BTW, tarmogoyf is not broken and do not deserved to be banned.

While this is true to a certain extent, I have to stress that neglecting decks that just fall outside Tier 1 is risky business. I'd never neglect the Stompy decks, as there are a lot of them out there and they, in some way, have a similar gameplan that you're going to (have to) get familiar with fast enough.
