I have a very special request for someone proficient/fluent in Japanese.
I need the card Ancestral Recall fully translated into Japanese. I'm entering a proxy contest on SCG and I want a special touch. :teach:
It would be greatly appreciated ;)

Target player draws three cards.
Wouldn't it be much cooler to use the original text? "Draw 3 cards or force opponent to draw 3 cards."

It probably would, but since it's in japanese I doubt a lot of people would notice the difference.

If you want transliterations, like how "Instant" becomes "i+n+su+ta+n+to" which is インスタント, and not translations;
Ancestral
a+n+se+su+tu+ra
アンセストウラ
Recall
re+ka+ru
レカル
That's the best I can do.
Wouldn't it be much cooler to use the original text? "Draw 3 cards or force opponent to draw 3 cards."That would be such an effort to do. What I gave was the current Oracle wording.

For the card text, you could just look at the Japanese version of Ancestral Vision (http://magiccards.info/ts/jp/48.html)
Unfortunately, magiccards.info uses Japanese characters, which don't show up on my work computer. I should be able to read it from home, though (or if someone else who knows Japanese wants to take a look, too). It will also give you the "Ancestral" part of Recall, too.

I guess I have to nit this: Wouldn't it be Rii-ka-ru? It feels like it needs the extension when you say it.

Sure, if you just want to transliterate instead of translating like a real man .
The first Kanji in the "Ancestral" part of "Ancestral Vision" is 'ancestor', and the second kanji is 'previous'. Put together, it's pronounced 'Sosen'. So Ancestral Recall is 'Sosen no _______', we just have to translate 'Recall', which is hard because even the English card name is ambiguous. I'm assuming they're using 'Recall' like someone recalling something, or remembering. Then 'Ancestral Recall' would be more or less translated as "Ancestral Remembrance" or something like that.
Just a disclaimer, I took three years of Japanese in high school. I reserve the right to be mistaken.
As for "Target player draws 3 cards.", that's already on Ancestral Visions, and reads thusly:
"Pureyaa hitori wo taishoutosuru. Sono pureyaa wa kaado wo sanmai hiku"
Translated more directly, it means "Target one player. That player draws three cards."

Looks good. 召還術 (Soukanjou) literally translates into "a call, summon, subpoena", though. Which I guess works just fine.
Ancestral Subpoena, bitch! We're taking you to the old courts.

Rikaichan actually suggests "recall" as a translation for this, so I guess it's a good word.

1) Any particular reason why half of that is in katakana and half in kanji? Magic-ese I can understand, but do you know why cards can't just use the Japanese word for "player"?
2) Why is "player" used twice?
3) I can't seem find the character for "three".

Oh definitely. It was just that I found it amusing that my Japanese dictionary said it meant "subpoena".

Because the Japanese word for "player" is "pureyaa". The Japanese have this awesome habit of just stealing words from other languages, and spelling them in Katakana. Right now I'm typing on a konpyuuta.
2) Why is "player" used twice?
It has to do with Japanese grammar. You can't actually say "target player", per se, so it says "Target a player. That player draws 3 cards."
3) I can't seem find the character for "three".
The character for "three" is just "3". Well, they actually do have a kanji for the number 3, but mostly they just use the Arabic numerals nowadays.

That's not uncommon, but "player"? Don't they have a word for people who play (Go / children's games / ball games / insert any game that existed in pre-19th century Japan)?

D'oh. I was so focused on the Rikaichan translations that didn't notice the "3" in there.
It has already been officially translated; I made japanese power proxies years ago from a site that had official texts. Unfortunately, that site seems to no longer exist.

I wondered that, too. Maybe in this case, the word "player" counts as Magic-ese? I mean, the term "player" is explicitly defined in the comprehensive rules, so maybe because it's also a specific game term, they Katakana that fucker up.

Not sure how "right" it is, but it feels good to me.
I'm not ready to show my progress on the art yet, but here is the card.
I'm going to redo my name, it looks super sloppy ...

This worked out well, now when I go to do full-Japanese belcher sometime,I am going to convert Elvish Spirit Guides into Japanese so I'll need help again.
