It's an obvious question, but the answer to the obvious question leads to a more obvious question...Why doesn't this see play? Which makes me suspect that the obvious answer is wrong.

Barrow Ghoul 1B

(Oracle:)At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice Barrow Ghoul unless you remove the top creature card in your graveyard from the game.

4/4

If there are no creature cards in your graveyard, he keeps on smashing face, right? Does this work like Jotun Grunt, or as an awesome tank? I feel like it should be worded "At the beginning of your upkeep, remove the top creature card in your graveyard from the game. If you do not remove a creature card this way, sacrifice Barrow Ghoul." or something like that.

It's that "unless" part.

If you don't remove the creature card, then he gets sacrificed. THAT'S why he doesn't see more play. It's because he sucks.

When the triggered ability resolves, you have the choice of removing the top creature card in your graveyard from the game. If you do not do so, then you sacrifice this card. You can choose to not remove the top creature card even if this card is not in play at the time. [D'Angelo 1999/07/10]

Frown.

Thanks.

Where did you find that ruling? I clicked the link at Star City to see any ask the judge questions about it, but that didn't come up.

Try here (http://magiccards.info/wl/en/3.html).

I would actually recommend that you don't. Most of those rulings are incredibly out of date, and a good portion of them are now wrong.

This goes for all rulings, but the ones on wizards.com's Gatherer have the best chance of being correct.

I think magiccards.info pulls rulings from CrystalKeep and Gatherer.

I think magiccards.info pulls rulings from CrystalKeep and Gatherer.

I thought it was just CrystalKeep, which is why I recommended not relying on them. The problem is mostly that even when they update and include the newest rulings, they also leave all the incredibly old ones there, encouraging players to become confused.

Plus Wizards.com's rulings are dated, so you have a better chance of knowing when they're inaccurated.

Bottom left corner, Magiccards.info lets you automatically search for that card on Ask the Judge, Saturday School, and especially Cranial Insertion. That's usually a lot better than the database rulings.
