The thing is that giving away 300 dollars isnt alot for a 20$ entry fee. I mean, the barrons event took in 660 dollars from entry fees and gave out 680 in prizes and raffles.
Im glad there is more notice for this one though. Its close which is the biggest factor for me.

So, anyone passing near Middletown to go to this? If yes, do you have a deck I could borrow?
I'd be willing to chip in a little for gas, obviously. PM me if you could give me a lift.

Something about that doesn't sound like:
"Here this is GBrw Burning Survival go do what you do with Survival and top 4 split"

Does Tarmogoyf count as vanilla?

Ding. Except it would be Grb with Wish or Grwb without Wish.

Technogeek is it me or do you not get how stores work when it comes to prize support?
If there are 12 people there is $325 in cash paid out (over $100 more than tourney fees), which means that if there are over 30 people present then there would be close to $600 or more in payout. The Grid's first event was run at a small loss $60 (only 14 people) and a repeat of that I would imagine would cause Karl to be more hesitant about more cash events.
Karl just doesn't want to gaurantee a huge purse and then have people not show and lose his shirt. He runs more sanctioned magic than anyone in the NorthEast and wants to help build Legacy.
Right now no other store in CT is having regular Legacy events and I think that everyone in CT and the nearby area should support The Grid's attempt as Karl is trying to make this a monthly event and working around other event schedules. As the event grows so will the publicized prize support, he's not looking to gouge anyone, but he also hasn't become one of the most consistent stores by giving away his own money. One of my favorite things is that there is plenty of free parking and plenty of tournament space so you're not bumping elbows with people.

I understand perfectly, but if you really want to get over 15 people you have to gaurentee a fair amount of prizes (like magic 500's do). Barrons is about as far away from the concentration of new england players as your gonna get and they still managed to get 33 people. If you gaurentee more prizes people will show up, if your only gaurenteeing 300 for 20 dollar entrance fee less people will come... thats just how it works. Anyways if he runs more sanctioned magic then anyone else in the NE like you claim then he should have a consistent player base to rely on, so taking a risk gaurenteeing more prizes should be less risky then it is for DHG or Barron's. If your hesitant about cash tournaments then cards as prizes work fine which would seem more profitable anyways.
Also Barron's is holding legacy events. There should be one in late october early november.

Techno, it says the prize support grows as more players show up to support the tournament. If you are trying to promote your store, you are doing real well at giving it a bad name. Be thankful there are Legacy tournaments in the area. If you are trying to complain, go to starcitygames.com, nobody will care there.

I wasnt trying to complain or promote... I was trying to advise.
The main point at what I was saying was that if you gaurentee more prizes, more people will come. Saying the prizes escalates with attendance rarely matters. Anyways I should probably stop bitching as Im probably gonna end up going anyways.

As far as The Grid player base goes, the store has a large limited population and a strong standard player base. They are in the process of developing their extended and legacy player pools since many of the players never played Magic during the age of dual lands and older formats.
That's one of the good things about The Grid, that it creates and develops new players which helps keep sanctioned events occurring in the state.
If you doubt the amount of people playing at The Grid at any given time stop by on any day except Monday and you'll be able to find sanctioned limited or constructed play. Tuesday (Extended will be starting on October 7th), Wednesday (Draft), Thursday (Standard), Friday (FNM Draft), Saturday (draft/special events like Legacy), Sunday (Standard).
Sorry for what seems like a Public Service Announcement, but I guess its needed.

It seems that there is too much Barron's versus The Grid going on. Any legacy in CT is good legacy. I'm not a huge fan of going out of state for legacy unless it's to Hadley.

I would love to some down for one of these, unfortunately this date is the same date as a regional Warhammer tournament I am running. Hopefully You guys run one the last weekend of November. If you do, I will surely be there.

I'd never bash Barrons and for normaly weekly events they are far enough apart that they don't compete with one another.
I became a real spell slinger there and learned from some of the best back in the day drafting with Dan McNeill, Mike Bregoli, Ray Tautic, Devin Low yadda yadda yadda. The store has had numerous players that have had success on the PT and at GPs, myself, buckley, team baller symposium, team nameless race....
Andy is a fun and always does his best to have older packs around for IPA and mirrodin drafts.

Woo Hoo Time for More CT Legacy!!!!!
I've been dying to play legacy since Hadley...I wonder if we can hit 51 players?
It's one of the first local legacy tourneys since Shards is legal could there be new technology unleashed? We shall see...

Paul, dearest barn, it's Shards, there's so few cards that are Standard viable, I suppose Tezzeret could tutor up your Painter Combo, but I don't see the set having much of an impact.

I hope somebody plays Tezzeret against me. The only cards I see maybe having an impact are Ethersworn Canonist and Ad Nauseam. I will be there.

A lot of friendly faces
Two top 8's for Team Awesome
Humility being Humility.
People not expecting Ajani
The Grid for being closer than Hadley
First time ever playing the Wrath of Gods I bought 3ish years ago.
Slops:
Trying to krosan grip survival of the fittest with no green source when the turn earlier I plaincycled and fetched a basic plains with savannah in deck.
Scrubbing in the top 8 again.
Congratulations to everyone on their finishes and here's to more legacy in CT in the future.

If I see Humility in the 8 million cards I draw, then yes, Humility does allow me to beat Survival.dec.
