I've noticed these tiny little people on many Esper cards. There are two in the foreground here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/arcana/1654 . Heck, the Master of Etherium is even holding one. Has Wizards released the story behind these guys? Has it been spoiled somewhere? If anyone knows anything about it, please let me know, because the concept of blue Gary Coleman's running around is really driving me nuts

You see, when a male Esper and a female Esper love each other very much...

They're familiars. The most powerful Esper wizards have them. I can't remember where exactly I read that, but it was at wizards.com, I remember.
edit - A ha! (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/4)
Under 'Esper':
Humans and the lanky Esper vedalken inhabit this world. The most powerful of these have creepy little homunculi as servants. Clothing matches the stylized look of their architecture, with filigree designs and flowing robes.
So they're homonculi familiars.

Awesome. Thanks Pinder. Now, is it just me or does it look like the homonculi have some kinda of arcane-hieroglyph based thoughtweft thingy going?

Knowing how these things tend to work in fantasy, it's probably a mental connection to their masters.
