View Full Version : A couple of card-choice questions
So, Legacy has a lot of good cards, and I'm having trouble deciding where my loyalties lie with some of them.
Mainly, with Spell Snare versus Force Spike. I like the fact that they can't play around spell snare, and that spell snare is good in the late game. However force spike will counter a variety of important spells including what spell snare will counter in the early game, and sometimes I'd like to have that kind of answer for country side crusher or goblin ringleader/lackey/warcheif, or a variety of scary first turns. What do you think?
Also if I have the ability to play Pernicious Deed in a 3 color deck, and that effect is beneficial to me, should I play deed or engineered explosives these days? Or both?

Yes and/or no.

On EE: If one of those colors is blue, setting up a lock with Academy Ruins is difficult if not virtually impossible for most decks to deal with. If not, Deed is probably better, depending on your card choices/deck type.

I'm not exactly sure but I know a lot more people run spell snare than run Force Spike. I guess it depends most on whether you want to have a counter for late-game or not and how bad are opponents' 1-drops.

If blue is one of the 3 colors I would say EE because of the recursion with Academy Ruins; however, if blue is not one of the 3 colors then I'd go with Deed.

To elaborate; while some cards tend to be stronger than others, there's no way of saying which card is absolutely better outside of the confines of your deck. Lightning Bolt is generally better than Gempalm Incinerator, unless you're also running Matron, Ringleader and Warchief, y'know? Deciding which to go for as an objective rather than a subjective choice is lazy and a terrible deckbuilding habit to get into. Don't fall into the syndrome of being a guy that plops together 37 staple powerhouse cards, 23 fetchlands, duals, and a few basics, and then sits around wondering why his dissynergistic pile doesn't work. (aka, ITF syndrome)
PS: I love you too, Dave.

I always play spell snare, I have daze and force to counter other spells and turn one plays. Later Spell snare is still relevant in almost every MU. I think daze and spike is unnecessary unless your meta game is entirely fast storm combo and beltcher, then you could play both and be teh winrar.

Daze randomly counters spell even in the late game against deck that run short mana (IE ThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThreshThresh)
Force spike, imo, should be replaced by Spell Snare. If you have room, then i would play Spike too

Oh, that's fucking clever. I'm sure that my terrible deck (which has already placed me into the Top 8 of both large tournaments I've played it in) is not at all responsible for my wins. I'm sure it must be my truly MASSIVE amounts of play skill that get me through each match.
1) The deck is actually very synergistic. You're just retarded if you can't see it.
2) There are "chase rares" that I'm not playing, which doesn't help your theory at all.
All proof points to you being wrong. If this was a dissynergistic pile of random good cards, then I wouldn't be winning. Yet, I do. Additionally, the synergies are obvious. Intuition + Life from the Loam. Eternal Witness + Volrath's Stronghold. Engineered Explosives + Academy Ruins. The list keeps going. Sure, it may not be as synergistic as something like Solidarity, but I can't see a deck that's as synergistic as Solidarity was.
Quit being so retarded.
P.S.: No seriously, stop.
LoL, lets be nice to eachother, guys. We're just discussing a game
Mr. Bear Assassin I suppose is right that I should clarify what deck I'm trying to put these cards into, ect. But yes, it is blue, it is running daze and Force of Will, and it is sort of a counter-aggro theme. For a deck that's eager to win within six turns by playing creature threats which it needs to protect with counterspells I'm wondering if force Spike or Spell Snare is a better choice for a one-cost counterspell.

If you have dazes, I think force spike is redundant, so I'd chose spell snare

It depends what cards you want to counter. Force Spike is much better at stopping Lackeys, Vials and Nimble Mongeese, but Spell Snare is much better at stopping Hymn to Tourach, Tarmogoyf and Counterbalance.

Anyone have that awesome nitewolf9 quote that says something like this? Shit was funny.

It's in Mad Zur's signature. Bigbear102's as well if I recall correctly.

I personally like spell snare against 2 cc spells, but it really isn't good against spells that aren't 2 cc. With engineered explosives, it is a good card to have against non-land permanents with converted mana cost equal to what you set the explosives to, but it doesn't hit those that have differing cc. Plus, engineered explosives has sunburst.
