The program is still in alpha.

You can get the program from here...

http://octgndev.wordpress.com/2008/09/28/alpha-2/

OCTGN 2.0 is a lot easier to use than OCTGN 1.0.

But it still supports a ton of features.

It's really fast and efficent.

To run it, need .net 3.5 AND .net 3.5 sp1 framework for Windows. The link to get them is also in the above link.

OCTGN allows for multiplayer gaming, Emperor Magic, Five Color, Mental Magic can all be played online now.

Just the idea of being able to play Emperor matchups online has me giddy with excitement.

What about you?

P.S. It also has no ads, popups, or monthly fees. It's 100% free.

This looks like an awesome program. Just one question, does MTG come with it already with a master base? I didn't see anything in your intro about it. Also can you play simple 1v1 games over the internet in alpha 2?

Yes, you can play games online now.

Go to filebeam.com and do a search for "octgn"

You will find both a Magic module and a 10th edition set with full card visuals.

Download both. Then when the program starts...

Click on Manage Install Games and direct it to where those two things are.

You're good to go.

Awesome, I'll download it when I get home. Anything you particularly want us to look out for with regards to glitches and such? And what is the best way to give you feedback?

Also, I am very relieved of the simple display of the in game play. Its clean and allows for a good visual of all the cards.

Screenshots that include the game we care about would be preferable.

Which puts it in Windows-only territory.

Just like every other Magic program?

Worse, not every computer has .NET 3.5. Specifically, why are you tied to that recent a release?

I went to filebeam and downloaded the files and it downloaded as a text file. It says to remove the file extension .txt but I can't seem to find at which step I do that. Help :-(

Just like every other Magic program?

Lackey is only supported on Windows? Damn, I'll have to tell my friend who's been running it on OSX for months...

Is there a way to make this, you know, work?

I installed Framework, extracted OCTGN, and installed the game with tenth. I can't edit or manage decks and whenever I try to load a deck in a solitaire game, I am met with, "The deck was made for the game '[OCTGN2]Magic-v0.0.1,' but game '[OCTGN2]Magic-v0.0.1.o8g' is expected."

Spellchecking & editing, much like paytesting, take far too much time & effort for such an important Internet personage to bother. And this program, if it worked properly Clark, would be a decent alternative. However, Clark, like most things you advocate, it looks so much better on paper (or in a screenshot) than in real life.

First, I didn't make this program. I just heard about octgn here before and had been tracking it. If you want to talk directly with the person who made this, please go to...

http://octgndev.wordpress.com/

Second, posting images of the game with MTG cards is an invitation for disaster. MTG card images (as beautiful as they look) are copyrighted by wizards.

Using them to promote this program would invite Wizards to come in and shut it down.

This is why the game needs people to create the MTG module and Sets with card images seperately and download them thru filefront or torrents.

The program is designed to play virtually any trading card game ever made. Blue Moon card images are used to promote the program because both the game and the card images are under an open license.

Third, like others here, it took me some time to figure out how to get it working.

First use windows update and get any .net updates that it shows you 2.0, whatever.

Then google .net 3.5 and install it.

After install .net 3.5, google .net 3.5 sp1 and install that.

Do them in that order and it absolutley will work.

What I did was....

Go to filebeam.com and do a search for "octgn"

You will find both a Magic module and a 10th edition set with full card visuals.

Download both

I put the downloaded files in the same folder as OCTGN.

I clicked on the menu above and clicked "Organize" then "Folder and Search Options" then "View" and unchecked the box that said "Hide extensions for known file types"

That shows the .txt at the end of the file name. Left click the filename and delete the .txt

Then just run the program, click on Manage Install Games and direct it to where those two things are.

You're good to go.

Does OCTGN not work with Vista? I click on OCTGN.exe, and it immediately tells me that it stopped working.

PEOPLE.

Keep in mind this is an ALPHA.

That's all I have to say.

Yes this is an alpha. MWS was alpha when it first became popular too. Even now, MWS is still in beta. And OCTGN already has a ton more features, and a far better interface than MWS ever did.

Lol, I'm playing a game with it on Vista at this precise moment.

But I had that same error you did initially.

To get the program to work, here's what I did.

I ran windows update and got all updates to .net it showed (1.1, 2.0 etc).

Then I googled and downloaded and installed .net 3.5.

Then I googled and downloaded and installed .net 3.5 sp1.

If you already installed 3.5 sp1 for some reason and get that error, remove sp1 (by running the sp1 installation again), then redo everything in the above order.

It will work for you.

But for whatever reason, XP doesn't require so many steps to get it working.

You got the opposite of my point. The point was "it's an alpha, so either cut the thing some slack or don't bother and stfu".

Captain Hammer

Oh, in that case. I agree.

Please cut the thing some slack. It does have a bug here and there. But overall it's an outstanding piece of software. Incredibly fast, fantastic interface, great graphics, and an impressive feature set.

It really is. But the program is still at a very early age, that's why I'm personnally trying not to advocate people trying it too much (but that's just my personal decision, I'm not claiming in any way that you should do the same ;) ). I wouldn't want too many users trying it and possibly encountering problems / missing features that would be fixed / added in upcoming releases which would then turn them away from the program as they fail to realize it's an alpha. Come on, you know that will happen : )

(although maybe if all the idiots decide to give up on it, then maybe it will provide for a better playing experience when the program gets close to final...)

No, i dont think that would be necessary? Seeing as how he's been running it for months on OSX...
