The oracle, and 10 edition, wording makes sense to me. However, the original Saviors text does to. What is the difference?

As Pithing Needle comes into play, name a card.

Activated abilities of sources with the chosen name can't be played unless they're mana abilities.

Activated abilities of the named card can't be played unless they're mana abilities.

So the difference is "card" vs "source".

Card: When a rule or text on a card refers to a "card," it means a Magic card with a Magic card front and the Magic card back. Tokens aren't considered cards-even a card that represents a token isn't considered a card for rules purposes. See rule 200.1.

So tokens aren't cards (and neither are copies of spells); that's a pretty glaring problem. I'm pretty sure the wording got fixed fairly soon after Needle was printed, but Mark Gottlieb wasn't doing his nice Oracle Update Summaries when 10E came out so it's hard to know exactly when it was fixed.

Ah, so it was fixed to include tokens and copies of spells then? If so, thank you for the explanation. And I won't necro ever again

Pretty sure it's contained in this website: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/feature/465a

That article does not contain anything re: Pithing Needle. I know that there was a change made, but I was curious as to why the change was made. cdr explained it to me (tokens and copies of spells). Thanks though.

10E was printed in 07, not 08. Plus all of Gottlieb's old articles are broken thanks to the new website.
