In other words, if my opponent plays a counterspell, can copy it with twincast and choose to counter the original counterspell with the copy?

Misdirection or Twincast work the same way; change the target of the counter to MisD/Twincast and when the counter resolves, it will have no target and will be.. countered.

Actually, Twincast doesn't work that way at all, since it actually puts a copy of the spell on the stack.
@OP - You can do that, yes. Twincast would allow you to make a copy of the Counterspell, and since this new copy would resolve before the original Counterspell, you can use it to counter the counter.
