I want to start running some legacy events in my area, does anybody know of a (hopefully free) program that I could use to generate pairings for a swiss style tournament? These would probably not be sanctioned if that makes any difference, I don't know if WoTC provides the software for sanctioned events.

Register as a TO at Wizards's site and you can download DCI Reporter 3.0. If you can't for some reason, version 2.9 is freely available somewhere on the Net (do a Google search for it).

Depends on what you call "freely available". 2.9 is no longer supported or licensed by Wizards, so you would be pirating it. Not that that would bother anyone around here.

So I think I'm just going to write my own program rather than register as a TO because I will almost never run a sanctioned event. It should be really easy to do, does anybody know how the DCI reporter calculates tie breakers though? It's going to be something like:

1) number of points
2) round of first loss
3) opp. win percentage
...

anyone know what the order is?

Edit: I'll be happy make the final product open to anyone who wants it.

Wizards now supports "casual" (non-rated) events, too.

I would recommend registering and downloading DCIR v3. You seem to underestimate the time it would take to create your own program.

Actaully, I'm almost done. I didn't realize that you could run unsanctioned events with DCIR though that's good to know.

But I'm still unsure of the way DCIR calculates tie breakers, so if anybody happens to know that would be raelly helpful.

To get v3.0, do you have to sign up to be a tournament organizer? and if so, then you have to take a tournament organizer test of some kind?

Yes and Yes. Click here:

Answer yes to the first question (assuming you have a DCI number...) and the second question asks if you remember your password. This is the same password you would use to log into the Personal Information Center (https://membership.wizards.com/login.aspx?dcionly=true&ReturnURL=https%3a%2f%2fwebapp.wizards.com%2flogin.aspx%3ftarget%3dpersonal&token=8d63a084-af33-4a5f-ae69-d91b07d4a3e8).

Here are step by step instructions on getting started and taking the test:

yes, to both as far as I know (definitely yes to the test part, though it supposedly is not difficult at all).

@darkalucard:

Thanks man.
