View Full Version : [Deck] Void Breaker
This is a deck that I have been playing for a while now. I've been trying to make Helm/Leyline work and I really like this list however I'm sure it needs work. Skill Borrower is a new addition that works great with sensei's diving top, helm, and the one of kiki jiki.
4 Counterbalance
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Brainstorm
4 Lim Duls Vault
4 Counterspell
4 Force of Will
2 Cryptic Command
2 Ponder
3 Helm of Obediance
4 Leyline of the Void
1 Kiki Jiki Mirror Breaker
3 Skill Borrower
22 Land

Flash your manabase
Skill Borrower doesn't work with Kiki-Jiki. I can't see the point of either of them being in the deck.
Also, fuck Cryptic Command. Play 2 additional Ponders instead.
I'd prefer Intuition over Lim-Dul's Vault. Also because you can add 4 Tarmogoyf as alternate win conditions, a Life From the Loam, Academy Ruins, Engineered Explosives and so on. ITF plays that engine, and it rocks your socks. Just be sure to counter graveyard hate, then. Also, a Pernicious Deed would perhaps fit in the deck, I dunno though. Test away!

Skill borrower do work with Kiki-jiki. You play its ability at the end of the opponent's turn on himself infinite times and the copies won't go away until your end of the turn. Still, I'm not defending the inclusion of any of the 2 cards in this deck.

I don't think that works:
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker:
T Put a token into play that's a copy of target nonlegendary creature you control. That creature token has haste. Sacrifice it at end of turn.
At end of turn. Not "at the end of your turn".
Skill Borrower looks like a very interesting card in the right shell though.
It works. It is a lot of work to explain it. But it definitely works. Also, be sure to include Pestermite in that deck.

"At end of turn" means that each activated ability that generates a token also generates a delayed triggered ability that triggers when the postcombat main phase ends and the end of turn step begins. Tokens created during the end of turn step won't die this turn because the trigger condition took place before they even existed, so they'll stay alive until the next end of turn step - that is, Kiki-Jiki tokens you create at the end of your opponent's turn remain in play during your next entire turn.

After a bit of thought, that actually makes sense... Very enlightening!
I just learned something new you knew thanks to you, thank you.

Its an interesting idea for sure, even if they swords the Borrower the other combo piece is still on top.
4 Delta
3 Strand
4 Tundra
4 Sea
2 Island
1 Swamp
4 Ancient Tomb (allows a substancially faster way to play the pieces, turn one looking with Top, and many other uses)
4 Leyline
2 Helm
1 Mindslaver (lol) (Kiki, takes not one, but 2 turns to kill the opponent)
4 Skill Borrower
4 Top
3 Engineered Explosives
3 Enlightened Tutor
2 LDV
4 Brainstorm
3 Counterbalance
4 Daze
4 FoW

Skill borrower works under the same principle that allowed astral slide to not suck. A similar mechanic was also at work for the glory days of waylay.
It's also a trick that should be quite familiar to you if you played Shadowmoor limited (or Kamigawa limited, where Otherworldy Journey existed), since Turn to Mist or Otherworldly Journey were both good common tricks you had to watch out for. You can Turn to Mist your opponent's creature at the end of your opponent's turn, which means his creature goes away for your entire turn, AND you had mana to do other stuff.
Waylay was errataed to gain "substance". Personally, I think they should just restore the original wording, I mean, they did it with Dreadnaught and even Time Vault, but no, Waylay is too strong

I see... But isn't it a very shitty combo? A 1/3 dies to STP, Lightning Bolt, Krosan Grip, and bla bla bla... It also requires Kiki-Jiki to be at the top. If it isn't, then Skill Borrower is pure shit.
Did you react on the rest I commented on?
Skill Borrower doesn't just combo with kiki-jiki but also works great with healm and top.

From 2006?
And this coming from the same WotC that adamantly tried to rework Time Vault such that it couldn't be Twiddled, only to let it be Twiddled like a month ago?
The flavour of Time Vault is that you should be able to store a turn to gain an extra one later (or usually, take an extra one on credit and have to pay it back), but look how it works now compared to "flavour" reason.
But that's enough topic derailment.
As for the deck, it seemed like a good idea when Skill Borrower was spoiled as having the ability to gain ALL abilities from the top artifact or creature. Now since it only gained activated abilities, I really don't think this combo is more efficient than any other one out there (by using Skill Borrower of course, just seems so...redundant, like in a bad way?).
