This weekend I found a local shop that was selling booster packs of Fifth Dawn on the cheap so I decided to buy a couple and combine them with some unopened Shards packs I had from the prerelease. I hate drafting. Always have, yet I'm still compelled to give it a go whenever I feel like playing Magic, but bored playing with decks I have built.

If you ever have the opportunity, you have to do a 5D/SHA draft. It's easily the best time I ever had playing the format since I started playing. It's pretty much a given that the two blocks would mesh well with all the artifacts, but seeing it in action is definitely worth your time. I was running a mini Trinket Mage toolbox with Excutioners Capsule, Sigil of Destinction, Wayfarers Bauble while my wife was recurring Branching bolts with Eternal Witness all evening. The decks were so fun to play we kept them together to use another time.

I know people who have drafted weird combos like LOR/Coldsnap/Weatherlight and I know someone else who did an all Homelands draft, but what other obscure combination of sets have you guys tried out that you found to be the most fun?

Fallen Empires straight up was pretty fun. I know that the Albany crew has done some weird combos before but I don't remember any that really stood out.

I did a Shards - Mercadian Masques - Champions of Kamigawa draft last week, that was a pretty fun format.

In the end I had a Deck which resolves around Konda, Lord of Eiganjo + Puffer Extract (neat combo), supported by fast small creatures, a sub-rebel theme and Elspeth, Knight-Errant as bomb to drop.

I also once did a draft with all different series. Ranging from Ice Age to the present series. Getting a different serie in your hand each turn really messes with strategies.

Best time I had drafting was Ice Age - Alliances - Coldsnap the day coldsnap came out.

So much better than the shitfest that was CSP CSP CSP draft.

I also enjoyed a FE-FE-FE-FE-FE-FE draft or two.

Homelands/Champions/Unhinged.

Best draft format ever.

So much better than the shitfest that was CSP CSP CSP draft.I actually liked triple Coldsnap, kinda. Like, it didn't actually involve any skill, and I'm sure I'd get really bored of it if I did it alot, but I'm a sucker for consistency, so any draft format where the basic strategy is just to draft as many of a single card as possible is right up my alley.

I ran Arena for several years, so I likely have everyone beat for vareity.

The best was probably all-foreign Ice Age/Alliances/4ED/Renaissance 2HG sealed.

Timespiral, Masques, Odyssey was a blast.

Get 8 people. Buy 24 packs, every pack must be from a different set (and each pack must conform to the newer 15 cards per pack setup).

Did you draft Goblins + burn spells and get the 15th pick Goblin Warstrike? A winner is you (seriously). Other cards in my deck from that draft were Oversold Cemetary, Pulse of the Forge, Feral Lightning, Rock Jockey (and other assorted awful Goblins that get in once or twice and then let burn spells finish the opponent off). Basically the only thing missing was a Skullclamp.

This is the Ninja's secret draft set tech. ;P

lol.

Combining RAV-PLA-DIS with INV-GPT-APOC using alternating seats with that configuration is interesting.

Fallen Empires, Legends, Homelands, and Unhinged made for an interesting one. Had to add a couple of packs due to the small pack size of older sets. you end up playing with utter and complete crap for the most part that barely meshes together at all. It's actually pretty fun. It's like a fight to get your deck working.

5 reasons you should draft the un-sets if possible:

1. Arguments over "right away" in reference to Cheatyface.
2. Being able to blow up permanents in any game you can see.
3. Forcing your opponent to buy you a drink.
4. Games being decided on rock, paper, scissors.
5. Creatures being put into the absolutely-removed-from-the-freaking- game-forever zone.

I've got about nine reasons you should draft beta.

I've always wanted to draft Fallen Empires. It's one of my life's goals, up there with finishing Peace Corps, qualifying for the pro tour, and doing 2 attractive women at the same time.

I just noticed that 50% of my life's goals deal with Magic.

What if you could win a spot on the Pro Tour during a Fallen Empires Draft as the final assignment for the Peace Corps and celebrate with two chicks at the same time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16QSYESBuRU).

Nice, lots of these packs are still floating around the shops by me for pretty cheap. One store has Unhinged for like $1.50, I think.

This will make me enjoy drafting a lot more. I haven't done it that many times, but I'd say of the times I have 70% or more was Lorwyn block. I hate Lorwyn block. The art, the tribes, the flavor, Kithkin, all of it. It left a bad taste in my mouth for drafting as a whole.

The majority of the other 40% was Masques Block. I still have a sealed booster of Phrophesy. I tried to draft it a few months ago. I wanted to slit my throat with a Rhystic Syphon, but my opponent had :3:

I'd have nothing left to live for. Except upping the number to 3.
