Round 1 : against Farid with a weird BG aggro-control deck
Game 1: I have dreadnought out very fast with FoW in backup that counters his smother. I damage him for 12, then 6 only the turn after because of a blocker and a sudden death. He's at 1 because of a fetch but his topdeck won't be good and he'll concede on his turn.
Game 2 : I have a hand with neither vial nor coloured-mana land. I mulligan at 6. Then, I'll draw a lot of coloured mana lands, but I still can have an aggroish position on the board with Serendib + Jotun in play and another Serendib ready to be played on the next turn with FoW in backup, so I'm still confidant. He will play 2 sudden deaths which will slow me down enough for him to play 2 tarmos and beat my face.
Game 3 : I have 7-hand with no land and no vial. I mulligan at 6. Once more, I draw a lot of lands but still, I can play dark confidant and Jotun Grunt in the same turn (Jotun Grunt to block the orhan viper, or stall a bit when my confidant provides me card advantage. He will play his 5th land after I wasted him a land on turn 1. He'll play deed and crack it at 2 in the same turn. Then I die slowly under the terrible CA he's get from 1, and 2 later orhan vipers.
Really bad start 1-2.
0-1
Round 2 : against Thierry with another wierd BGw aggro-control
Game 1 : I can't remember well the games. My life point count down is quite talkative. I lose 1 life probably on a fetchland and a FoW. Thierry met only the 8 life point step. I can imagine that a dreadnought smashed his face. I did not see any white or plains in his deck at this moment.
Game 2 : Turn 1, he plays a that goblin that gives -1/-1 to a target creature where it dies. It will block a Jotun at some moment. The time for him to find a solution to him (in the 2 games, I've seen smother, putrefy, mortify and vindicate). His life points go down by 3 and mine by 1 until 13 life points. He will never play any threat.
Hope comes back 2-0
1-1
Round 3 : against Gilles (aka Kesako) with AN kobold.
Game 1 : he tries to combo with chrome mox printed with tendrils, he generates 6 black mana and plays the tutor for B, naming Ad Nauseam. First card he reveals: tendrils (he scoops directly because he knows he plays only 2 tendrils in his deck. He did not see any tundra, which is important because he won't expect me to play meddling mages in game 2.
Game 2 : I don't have any coloured land but I have FoW and vial in opening hand, so I keep. He starts with bayou + petal. He plays glimpse of nature. I say ok. He plays another glimpse of nature. I force. He cycles all his kobolds. I play vial and I topdeck a meddling mage. When vial is finally at 2 counters. He plays the same tutor for AN, he plays AN. When he reaches 10 spells and 4 black manas in resp I vial in meddling mage naming tendrils. He has no response in his deck and he scoops.
These games were fun. 2-0
2-1
Round 4 : against Laurent with a bad WW
Game 1 : He starts playing plains and firgure of destiny. I had a good hand with a lot of mana denial which seems turning out bad. He boosts his figure on turn 2. Then he plays kjeldoran outpost. Perfect… Then we come to the following situation: I attack with dreadnough and jotun and he's got only a 4/4 figure as a blocker. He blocks dreadnought and plays the spell for 2(U/W)(U/W) that makes all the creatures in the board being a copy of the target creature (figure of course). FoW saves it and wins the game.
Game 2 : Another dreadnought is in play. He's at 8 and he fulltaps to play a lot of blockers and gain 1 turn. I have FoW and I could counter the last one to win on my next turn but I fear abolish. Actually, he did not even know the card. He's forced to block with all his creatures to survive and will not find anything relevant on his next draw (anyway I still had FoW in hand).
Nice round with a father who came to the tourney with his son. He stopped playing after tempest and plays now with his son. He did not even play STP. 2-0
3-1
Round 5 : against Julien with threshold 4c UGwr
Game 1 : I still need to win in order to be sure to reach the top8. I have quite a good hand with a lot of lands including 2 wastelands. He does ponder turn 1 with a tropical island. I've always loved that play. I waste it. Then he'll stick with 1 tundra in play. I play confidant that get sworded. I play serendib that get sworded. Finally I decide to waste his tundra and I play a second serendib that will deal 21 damages. He had a third sword in his hand but he will never have another land, if we except the fetch that I stifle which he forces and that I stifle another time after that. I even had trickbind but I did not want him to understand that I was playing dreadnought.
Game 2 : Quite long game with dreadnoughts and confidants on my side. He damages me quite a lot but he has to sword 2 dreadnoughts to survive. The CA provided by the confidant (against 15 lost life). He will play a coutnertop at some point in the game although I already have a dominant position (jotun grunt and serendibs againt mongooses and tarmogoyfs). I have to force an important spell at some moment and he forgets to use his counterbalance.
I am in the top8. I played only subpar decks and players up to now because of my bad first round. But the top8 gathers better decks. 2-0
4-1
1/4 final: against Jean-François (trent.lane) who plays also Threshold 4c UGwr
I don't remember much of the games. The 1 was quite fast and I win it after dominating the game from a to z. Game 2 is quite easy too, thanks to his double mulligan. It finishes quite nicely. I have vial@1 in play, 2 lands into play and he's got 2 cards in hand. I play 1 dreadnought with my first land. He forces. I pass my turn but at his upkeep, I realize that he could topdeck daze so I decide to vial in a second dreadnought and to stifle it. And he topdecks daze. I would probably still have won this one thanks to my confidant I had in play and my full hand against his empty hand and his empty board. Anyway, we prefer to avoid this kind of errors in a top8.I realize that I did not lose a single game since the round 1. 2-0
1/2 final: against Benjamin (aka Bickette) with aggro loam
Game 1: As he lent me some cards, he asks me to concede the first game and I generously execute myself. I'm kidding but I could have done it as well because g1 can only be won on dreadnought turn 2/3 (it happens often with vial, stifle and trickbind, I need dreadnought in hand…). I have a good hand but with no dreadnought. I keep it. Maybe that's not the good strategy against aggro loam and an aggressive mulligan is more effective. I force a crusher, but I can't deal with all his threats.
Game 2 and 3: My SB is terrific against loam with 3 extirpate, 3 meddling mage, 2 stinkweed imp and 4 beb-like. I SB out the dreadnoughts as he enters krosan grips, which is still very effective against vial. In game 2, I win very easily without drawing a single SB card. In game 3, he mulligans to 5 but he still starts quite fast with mox diamond and life from the loam. But I control his graveyard with jotun and imp, while serendib hits him. I extirpate tarmogoyf and crusher when I dominate the board. He gives my jotun grunt another turn by gripping my vial which seals the game.
I still think that post SB, the MU is very positive for me.
Final: against Pierre (alias Sakimmd) with Togless Tog
Game 1: He finds 2 deeds, while I can't find a single stifle effect. He kills me with stalker. I forgot to vial up once in this game. The only time in the tourney when I forgot an upkeep effect (I play 5 MD upkeep effects: vial, jotun, serendib, rishadan port and confidant, difficult to manage)
Game 2 and 3: I SB in stinkweed imp and meddling mage, plus maybe 1 or 2 extirpates. On game 2, he plays deed but he can't activate it on his turn but I have jotun, confidant and vial@2 in play. End of turn, I vial in another confidant that would help me to find a stifle effect, will get his life down to 1 (no more FoW or fetches). The second confidant reveals trickbind. I get him down to 1 as I'm at 8. On his turn he plays 2 tarmos which I could force, but I don't care since I only need to deal him 1 damage and I don't want to spend more life. I just need to reveal something else than FoW+serendib/FoW/stinkweed imp. I reveal a land and a FoW. I win without a single card from my SB once more. Game 3, I have meddling mage in play (naming deed), jotun and confidant in play, he'll search his single EE as I have no response in hand. Winning against togless tog finding only 2 stifle effects in 3 games is a performance. Usually the MU is pretty easy thanks to them, but without them, it's another story.
