I wanted to gauge possible interest in creating an annual Secret Santa here at The Source.
It would be nice during this financially tight holiday season if we as a community could provide Legacy playable cards that others could benefit from.

We will be creating an address bank from which participating members can send out gifts on an individual basis. If you would like to join in please PM me your address.

Take Notice:
1. As to make this worthwhile, the minimum value of each gift should be 10-15 USD and consist of Legacy playable cards.

2. Please refrain from sending lower quality bulk common/garbage rare cards. If you are going to participate please use common sense when picking cards to send. The gift you send by no means needs to exceed the minimum value or consist of super rare foils, but it would be nice for people to receive cards they would actually use. Also realize that just because you send out Xx USD value in cards does not mean you will receive the same amount back.

3. When mailing please use top loaders, no one likes bent cards.

Participating members so far:
Ertai's Familiar
Frenger
DalkonCledwin
Jak.
Magic Fanatic
Phoenix Ignition
Fons
That kid you all hate
Afro
Swing4Five
AngryTroll
Kadishack
Jaynel
Rockout
Klaus
Heroicraptor
Gambit
DuxDucis

If you want to participate the deadline for sending me your address is November 30th.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Your usage of the word 'whom' is appallingly bad.

As far as the actual idea, it is certainly in good spirits, but trying to coordinate it seems like way more trouble than it is worth.

lol.

I honestly do not believe it to be that difficult. Pick some cards, mail them to an address, and wait.

I think it would be easier to have the organize get everyone's address and then PM each member one address for them to send the cards to. That way postage is only paid one time per transaction, and the organizer wont have to sent everything, which would cost a lot in postage.

That said, I'm in. I'll be hookin some lucky sourcer up with some german foils if we get this rolling.

Yeah thats why I suggested both methods. It seems as though it would be easier to just collect addresses and distribute them to members.

If you would like to join in please PM me your address. I will edit the original post and add in a list of participating members.

It would probably also be good to set a standard amount for everyone to make their gift. That way, nobody will send out a fetchland and get a $2 rare.

I think $10-$15 would be fair, since it's not too high but still makes it worth the time, effort and postage.

I also think that the Secret Santa thing should have a rule against sending Bulk Commons, as I feel it would be disapointing to send 1 or 2 rares, and then recieve like 50 to 100 Bulk Commons in exchange.... but that is just me.

Personally, I would rather get Brainstorms, Dazes, Ponders, Lightning Bolts, etc over a crap rare.

I suppose this is true....

Hadn't thought of that....

Then again, the only cards I really can send out are either my burn stuff (which I would rather not trade off) or some "crap rares" >.<

As someone who for a 2 year time period sold cards almost strictly to Europeans through eBay, I just don't want the hassle if my package gets caught up in customs. I plan to send my card(s) via bubble mailer and I have been the victim of a lot of "lost" or delayed deliveries. I just don't want to hear the person I'm supposed to send to bitching that their cards haven't arrived.

The whole point is the spirit of giving. I think we can all assume that whoever signs up for this isn't doing it to get cards and screw someone over. I'd like to think that everyone will send an envelope of cards... if you wanted to screw someone over we could just send crappy bulk cards that we all have left over. So if someone doesn't receive their cards, we can hopefully assume it isn't the sender's fault.

Bah, I have some awesome legacy cards at home that I will never get the chance to use probably, but I won't be able to get at them until the later part of December. There's always next year.

Question out of curiosity: how is the insanity of postal service during the Yuletide season going to be dealt with? Are gifts going to be sent before the scramble, after or are gifts going to just be thrown into the eye of the storm?

socialite
11-18-2008, 07:20 PM
@ Afro, I was planning on taking any out of North American people myself, to avoid people bitching about postage. Please send me your address and I will make sure you get an individual in North America.

@ Mordel, The deadline to join is November 30th. I would like to have people mail out their gifts by no later than the 10th of December, I believe that will leave plenty of time for packages to arrive around the major holidays.

As far as ripping, this has been on my mind and I am obviously avoiding people who seem suspicious. Despite that there is nothing I can really do to insure people will get a gift. It really comes down to the honor system. This is partly why gifts really should not exceed 10-15 USD. This may be a huge concern for some people, for me I try to pay it no mind as I believe this community is above it.

If anyone seriously joins an online secret santa with the intention of ripping someone out of $10-15 then they can just GTFO. Honestly... I really hope no one would ever sink that low.

I didn't let the person I sent know that it was me... unless they can figure it out from the return address and my name being on it. So really it's easy enough to figure it out.

After looking for 10 seconds I know who's getting the card/cards I sent ... just from their vague personal information.

I just realized by him posting in here saying what cards he got (I requested this to know that he received them) and by his location.

I just got home from school (yay done with finals!). I was excited to see the Winnie the Pooh Christmas card hahaha I wish I would have thought about putting a fun envelope in with mine too. For the gifts I got an Italian (maybe spanish, I can't tell the difference) Mox Diamond, a French Kjeldorien Outpost, a helm of obedience, and an Infernal Contract.

Very happy with these, it will help me start out a geddon stax deck (I've always wanted to throw Kjeldorien in one). Helm of Obedience will probably make it into a casual deck of mine because that combo is hilarious. Thanks mysterious person! (yeah there's only one person on this site from Ar, but we'll just pretend it's "secret" Santa still.)

Didn't the USPS have like a commercial that ran during the holidays a few years back stating just that?

USPS Mail Person trudging through snow with shit on a sled.

My two day Fed Ex cell phone shipment just passed day 4 today. For anyone in the northern states I would guess you may have had similar luck with secret santa gifts.
