We might have an extra space in our room. Send naked pics and we'll decide.

I also have 2 spots open in my car for the trip down. It's cheaper than the train/flying, 11 hours in a car is ok by me. I have a 2007 Sonata with lots of room and 30 mpg. PM me if you still need a ride.

The artists are announced:

It's Rob Alexander  and Alan Pollock

Search by artist, the only reason to ever use Gatherer over magiccards.info:

Rob Alexander (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/index.aspx?term=Rob%20Alexander&Field_Artist=on&setfilter=All%20sets)
Alan Pollack (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/index.aspx?term=Alan%20Pollack&Field_Artist=on&setfilter=All%20sets)

Not even that (Alexander (http://magiccards.info/query/spoiler/3349138.html) and Pollack (http://magiccards.info/query/spoiler/3349145.html)) - NC

Man, Pollack goes to everything. Too bad he doesn't have more good cards than he does.

Rob Alexander is great, very approachable - I've probably talked to him more than any other artist.

Also, he did Badlands, Taiga, Underground Sea (!!!), Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Wooded Foothills, and probably some other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head.

So he's basically a Legacy player's wet dream when it comes to signing shit.

i was really hoping for someone else

Well, I'll be there also so hopefully I can catch up with some people for a beer. I hate driving in large cities so I'll be hanging out at the hotel a lot.

Out of curiousity, how many cards can you get an artist to sign? I have a full playset of foil Fetches and beta duals I'd love to hit up Rob with, but that seems excessive.

Damn, that guy did half of what is worth a crap for lands that were ever printed. Duals, Fetches, Ravnica Duals, even the Filter lands in standard. Demonic Consultation, Lim Duls Vault, and a ton of other playables.

Usually 20 at a time...but nothing stops you from getting in line again  Sucks when you're playing, but it looks like they might have the artists there quite a bit over several days.

This just happened to really work out for me because my two brothers and myself live in Minneapolis and my sister lives in Chicago so we are going to take the Megabus there ($40 round trip) and crash at her place while using her car lol.

So which clubs are the meat markets for all the single guys Saturday night?

Only if you have 0-1 bye.

Wrath_Of_Houlding
03-02-2009, 03:07 PM
5-0 will get you three byes. If that's it worth it then yes. I think it is, simply because getting byes should allow to avoid random, unplanned-for (and thus not sideboard prepared) decks. I'll be there.

rockout
03-02-2009, 03:09 PM
When do the grinders start? Or are they running basically all day friday?

cdr
03-02-2009, 03:16 PM
They start at noon, and should run until there's no more interest or until it gets pretty late.

Having byes is so critical to GP success that if you have only one or no byes, you should play in as many grinders and you can afford to or stand to. They're rough, but the payoff is huge.

Running some of the later ones that finish at like 3AM is more questionable though, I guess.

From Pasttimes.Net: Grand Prix Trials (3 Power Tickets) $20.00 entry
Starting at noon. 32 Person Single Elimination
Win a 3 round bye to the Grand Prix and Conflux prize packs!

Any idea on the specifics of the prize support? Are packs only for the winner? That seems cruel.

As a general rule of thumb prizes only go to the winner. Grinders are meant to disappoint 31 people.

You mean 3 byes and six draft sets actually.

If they start at noon I will probably play in at least 1. No reason not to in my opinion.

Unless I'm suddenly failing at math, I'm pretty sure that first place gets enough packs for a full 8-person draft. That's what I meant by 'draft set' anyway.

Stupid Abold doing well secretly.

You know, you'd think that top 8 at GenCon wouldn't be what you'd call "secret", but despite my best efforts I can't seem to find a single link to the top 8 of that tournament, either here on the Source or at wizards.com

edit - But apparently they're on Starcity (http://sales.starcitygames.com/deckdatabase/deckshow.php?&t%5BC1%5D=leg&start_date=2006-06-04&end_date=2006-08-27&city=Indianapolis).

lol @ 'Thunderbluff'. Also, he only played 3 Tops, which is amusing to me because now we know that 5 is the right call.

I was listening to the radio this morning and heard an ad for something at the convention center this weekend. I checked the website, and while the GP isn't listed this is...so if you scrub out, you can always hit up the Lake Home and Cabin Show. Woo!

There is very little love for the greatness that is I. Little known fact about that Top 8, my quarters match took over an hour and a half. The judges told us to pick up the pace but could not actually do anything about it because neither of us were playing slowly. It was the epitome of control vs aggro. Every time he played a goblin, I killed it. G1 he smashed me in about 5 minutes. Game 2 took over an hour and 15 minutes. I won that one. Game 3 he smashed me again in about 3 minutes. It was awesome though.

Either way, I'm winning this GP.***

Player's meeting starts at 10, so get there around 9-9:30.

GPTs were largely dominated by Sourcers and other big names. The field was around 60% blue, lots of tempo based decks and Landstill.
