Hi Gang, I finally have some details about the TMD Open 13 that I promised you. First and foremost, there was some concern about holding this 2 weekends after GP: Chicago. I have several reasons for going ahead with it.
1.) The GP is quite a distance away and TMD Opens don’t get quite the pull they used to. I would love to see the ICBM/Meandeck/Virginia guys come out for this but until it gets to the point where they are able to attend more frequently, I have to go with what my local players want.
2.) I plan on doing a huge event in the Summer. I can’t give the details yet, but I think it will be huge.
3.) If we don’t get as many people, so be it. I have a sliding prize scale, and will provide the best possible experience to my players whether we get 20 or 200, but to not have an event at all just because it may not bust at the seems is ridiculous.

I would love to see some representations from some “Pros” from far away. For that reason, I am starting a new program similar to the Player’s Club that the DCI uses. My version 1.0 is simple. If you ever won a Vintage World Champs, you automatically play in my events for free. That means that Carl Winter, Windfall, Travis Spero, Steve M., and Paul M all play for free if they wish to make the trip down to my event. I may expand this program if it proves successful in increasing the level of competition at TMD Opens. What do you all think? Share your feedback below.

And for those traveling from Canada, Ohio, Virgina, etc, you may be qualified for the purchase of a bye as outlined below. I only included the list of local tournaments over the past year, but if you did well in a tournament and you want it listed because you plan on coming to this event, let me know, and I’ll add the info to the bye list.

The team competion was always a hit, but with smaller crowds and less known teams, it has lost some of its luster. The question is, “is it worth it?” Should I keep running it or are the incentives just not enough anymore? Again, please share your feedback below.

Finally, I am going try preregistration for this event. This is something new that I have never tried before. You don’t have to pay when you preregister, you just need to pm me and say you are coming. It is just to get a head count, so if later you find you can’t come, pm me again to let me know. The incentive: their will be a prize given out at TMD Open 13 for one lucky preregistrant.

This free tournament will be single elimination.

BYES:
The top finishers(top is a relative word based on the size of the event) of ANY Type 1 Tournament in the world will be rewarded with the ability to purchase a round one bye at the upcoming TMD Open 13 separate from any prize the TO is giving, The following guidelines are to be considered:
1.) The tournament must have at least 25 people.
2.) If the tournament has between 25 and 49 people, the winner may purchase a bye for $10.
3.) If the tournament has between 50 and 74 people, the winner AND/OR the 2nd place finisher may purchase a bye for $10 each.
4.) If the tournament has 75+ people, the top 4 players may purchase a bye for $10(this will mainly be SCG events)

ALSO, a TO can still offer byes as prizes in one of two ways. They can purchase either a round one bye without entry for $10 or a round one bye with entry fee for $40. These can only be use as prizes for:
1.) Part of a first or second place prize if the tournament has between 15 and 39 people.
2.) Part of any top 4 place prize if the tournament has between 40 and 64 people.
3.) Part of any top 8 place prize if the tournament has 65+ people.

Any TO's wishing to purchase a bye must contact me prior to the day of the event for which the bye is being offered, though payment doesn't have to be received until after the tournament takes place, since if the tournament does not meet the minimum number of players and the bye cannot be awarded, the TO will not be charged.

Although it isn't exactly conflicting with it, GP Chicago is only 2 weeks prior to that. A lot of players will be spending a lot of money to go there, so they might not have the cash to travel to another tournament so quickly. Personally I'll be like $250 in the hole from Chicago, so I wouldn't likely travel for some time afterwards.

I think it'd be smarter if you pushed it back a little so people can gather their bank accounts a bit then come to play. :)

I second Di's sentiments. I haven't had the opportunity to play in a TMD Open yet so I definitely want to attend, but Chicago is already consuming way too much money. I'd want to wait until April at some point, or maybe even late May so all the college students are free from academic distractions?

I totally understand that this may interfere with some players ability to make it, however, I think it is better to have a smaller event now then none at all.

Therefore, info updated.

Also, Mods...would you be able to change the name of this thread to "TMD OPEN 13 - March 21-22, Stratford, Ct. (First prize = up to $1000)"

I don't know if I am able to do it myself, or if so, how to do so.

Also unfortunate that I scheduled a legacy event at Jupiter on the 21st...

Another solid event Ray. My first vintage event and I went 3-0 then 1-3 finishing 30th out of 117 with Oath and got myself a t-shirt. All in all not a bad day of magic.

i was just browsing through the forums and decided to read random event initiations and i read your article. I was wondering if you had found an answer to your "Dopeness factor" thing... cuz i know the number 63 works.. 6+3=9 which is a perfect square of 3 and 36 is a perfect square of 6. 18 fits the same criteria... i don't know if 63 and 18 are the only numbers that work with this particular criteria because i didn't actually spend the time to figure out what other numbers that could work but 63 and 18 were the first numbers that popped in my head.
if 63 and 18 are the only numbers that fit the requirements than that mean the answer is 2, and if i'm the only one to answer it correctly... what do i get? a cookie? i love cookies!
