View Full Version : [Question] CaNG IV, when?

GreenOne

So, it's almost one year from CaNG III (http://mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8013&highlight=cang). It was really a great experience and nice concepts and decks grew in its shell.
I personally enjoyed much being a judge, and seing the community work together on great and new projects.
I see that probably before the GP there will no secret techs or new decks/concepts posted here, but nonetheless I firmly believe that Legacy should be a format that grows with this community help, more than inside teams' forums.

Will the next CaNG take place?
When?
Is the GP changing the CaNG schedule?

EDIT: GaNG = Create a New Good Deck contest.

Not many people that have tech are going to want to risk sharing it right before the GP, so it would likely be after the fact.

I like the idea, it just has one major flaw: Admin activity. Most of the reds have been super busy lately (see: Tourney/Report split, DTB update, etc.) and might not have much time to actually set up the CANGd IV fourms and go through judge selection, deciding what is original/viable changes, etc...

It's a lot of work, and I don't think that people the admins will have the time to do it until post-GP, at the earliest.

So, the GP is over and, well, let's do it!!!

Actually, I'd be in for it.

Bonus points to a deck that doesn't use Goyf, Top, Counterbalance, or Ad Nauseum. Super Bonus points to a deck that doesn't use any of them.

This.

Finally another CaNG competition! Was MossNought the last winner, wasn't it?

Did it ever place in an event, though? It certainly seemed fun to play.

Not really.

As far as I know, I was the only person who played it (and random European countries and Gearhart at one event) and I did pretty well at every event I took it to -- it was fun. Haven't played in ages though.

Well, if you change your minds, I'd be happy to playtest all entrants (against a gauntlet or whatever). Variety is always enjoyable for me.

Since it has been a month...

I think it would be fun to have it happen again and spice it up here at the Source. Please PF!!!! (Peter_Fresh)

I'll toss my two cents in. I wouldn't mind seeing another one. You usually get some pretty decent decks out of it.

With alara reborn just being released it seems like an alright time to do this or wait for m10

Also, please, please have number four at some point? CaNG is just awesome.

GP has gone, lots of stuff is done, M10 is out.

Time to go for GaNG IV !!!

Please, let's just do it.. This thing was so funny and helpful for the format..

I'm also willing to give some prices for it, and some for the organizers (don't expect duals, but some playable cards in the format).

I agree. Since nothing big is happening or happening soon in the future, this seems like a good thing to do right now to spice up creativity and the forums.

I can offer a playset-alteration credit for first place, if anyone is interested in something like that.
I really like CaNG, and I'd like to see it come back now that we have M10 and 'new rules' and such.

I suddenly desperately want to win CaNGD. I voted "Yes" for this earlier, and I'd still love to have one. The downside is that it takes a fair amount of effort to run, both on the part of a Mod to supervise and a group of reasonably decent players to test it.

If I win, could I get a set of altered survivals? I'm gonna have to win if I can. Some awesome survival combo.....

Heh. I had forgotten about this.

I entered Merfolk last time and lost big time. What a piece of crap that was. I am going to try to find something good this go-round if I enter.

Yeah. I don't think neither that the evaluation was relevant at all. I think, that's nearly impossible to evaluate. Actually, the most to difficult is not to build a deck, but to evaluate it. I don't think that a bunch of testers or simply reviewers (let me doubt that you have time to test all the decks) can do this job efficiently.

However, the yawg07 prize clearly motivates me to take part to the lottery (I wish it would be real lottery).

Dates, judges, rules and ect. Since this will never get of the ground unless everything is figured out.

Yeah, with this (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?p=214414#post214414)list. Indeed it was a good piece of crap at that time, with Goblins as THE DTB and Rifter still present in the meta.

However, I was part of the judging staff, and I must confess, I tried a lot of decks (merfolk too), but I'm so suckish with aggro control and control that the combo decks appeared way above the other decks in my testing. Also, Mossnought was an amazing concept, and a difficult deck to develop. I wonder why was never taken to serious tournaments by people. Goyfs, Dreadnoughts, a good number of control elements and a combo engine in the same deck is nothing to sneeze at. Props to IOwn.

David Gearheart took Mossnought to a few tournaments, but it ended up winning because of Goyfs, Dreadnoughts, and the control package. Not because it ran a cool combo. Still a fun deck.

I think it would be interesting to have another one of these because a lot of decks get there kick starts from it. Merfolk (more from recent printings but the groundwrok was layed), Faerie Stompy, Rifter, etc.

Rules:
Most of the rules of CaNG III (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8013&highlight=cang+III) can be applied here too.

Dates:
Well, we should first find some organizers.

Judges:
I'm willing to be a judge, but like 2007 teached me, I'm going to be biased towards combo or aggro decks.

Prices:
I'll give as price an altered Dark Ritual and probably a Fow and a Wasteland and some number of gemstone mines, city of brass.

My organizational, recruiting and coordination skills are way below the success threshold. I guess it's better if someone else wants to do it. I'm willing to help though.

Seriously, I have a deck list ready to go. Let's get this thing started. It might be worthwhile to wait until the Zendikar spoiler is complete, though. New cards always make for some interesting ideas.

I have no plans to organize this anytime soon. It's A LOT of work and there are many factors working against this:

1. My new house and 1000 things to do in it.
2. My new job and planning a new course.
3. My relative Magical inactivity.
4. It's a lot of fucking work.

If number four happens at all, it will happen around X-Mas or April break.

Sure anyone can set it up. You need several players to playtest all of the decks. Write up whats good and bad etc.. and compare notes. It sounds super easy but is anything but. You will have a ton of decks to test.

I'm just wondering if perhaps any of the other mods/admins aren't as busy as P_R and could set this up. Though I understand if they can't.

Yes but the person running it still has to do the testing also, plus get all the information from the other testers. Pretty much it's fun to enter in the contest, not run it.
