I recently finished my play set of Imperial Recruiters. I would love to play them, but I think the painter combo is way to weak in the current meta. Is it possible to break Recruiter w/out the painter combo? Ideas?
Maybe....a Survival toolbox type build????

Sorry dude. I've tried just about every single archetype that could feasibly use Imperial Recruiter as a serious win-find condition to no real avail. He has his uses, however. You'll be able to get just about any creature you need, so as a tutor, he works just fine. That's assuming you build your deck around him, however.
Building your deck to necessitate him can work. In the case of Imperial Painter and even Aluren, he works great. But "breaking" him you'll find is next to impossible. Using him in Survival variants is a possibility, as most critters sitting in your library already have power two or less. But considering you already have Survival to get what you need anyways, spending the mana to cast him and then trying to use Survival again can be mana intensive, and that's taking into consideration the amount of mana some types of Survival are capable of generating.

There's also the oh-so-original Aluren.
He can combo out with Food Chain through Goblin Matron, Kiki-Jiki, and Lightning Crafters, but there's very limited enchantment tutoring for Green/Red.

Could be fun to have some Recruiters in that funky stuff. Go nuts.

If I had a set of Imperial Recruiter I'd take a Goblindeck with some Kiki-Jiki's in it, then I'd replace the Matrons with the Recruiters and add some Pestermite's => big combo/aggro-fun!
/edit: obviously that deck needs Volcanic Island too and I think Ancient Tomb would be better than Rishdan Port to make a kill on turn2 possible.

That goblin thing looks fun. Too bad I don't have recruiters.
Aluren and Imperial Painter are fun enough for me to add them to my wish list.

Actually I've seen a pretty good deck in online classic that uses recruiters to power up a Reveillark engine.
Includes stuff like Phantom Nishoba, Meddling Mage, Gaddock Teeg, Momentary Blink, Mulldrifter, etc. Build is UWRg. It's pretty strong, has a lot of potential. Can't remember the specific list, but I've played against it several times and it's not weak at all.
