It's another Chicago report from a kind-of-pro. This one is really good, with an exhaustive and smooth account of both the creation of the list(s) and the matches played. The deck he piloted is a {Landstill - Standstill + Tutor + Counterbalance} list very similar to Zvi's from 2007; for what it's worth, I don't think it's much good especially since it kind of bites it to a sufficient number of EE+Grips+Predator.

Also, for those of you who love to hate the guy, there's Calosso in there.

Of all the GP reports I've read, this has to be the best one! Very well written.

That was a great report, definitely a good read. I was particularly impressed by how well he seems to understand Legacy (in terms of decks, deckbuilders, and theory). I think Gavin has an account here, no?

EDIT: Parcher's comment in the SCG forums is awesome.

Wow, Gavin. I hate tournament reports, and this... was cool! Very well written.

Best part? You're a Missy Higgins fan

I'd like to officially announce that I won the internets.

He referenced not one, but two decks I built as contenders for his choice for the Grand Prix. Best part? The second one was a joke. Shit, I don't even know where he got it from other than looking through the Top 8 thread. Not like I posted it.

Fucking awesome. Also, he spelled my name correctly but misspelled Alix's name. LOLZ. Win.

This article was a nice break from some of the dry, primer style reports that I read all too often. Reading a Magic article shouldn't feel like doing math homework. Nice job, Gavin.

Yeah, I thought I hated Magic articles... this was a storybook.

I want to give partial credit to the color adjectives, but it was just well written overall.

Are you talking about Alix Hatfield? Because he doesn't mention Alix Hatfield.

Yes he does. He mentions his NOThresh list that won the GPT...

The versions of Threshold I had, especially the Alix Hatsfield version with Progenitus, seemed pretty good, but more in the “this-is-the-stock-deck-you-need-to-be-able-to-beat” sense than the “this-deck-is-the-best-deck-to-play” sense.

Very well written article, quite fresh. That 'scandal in bohemia' deck reminds me alot of the older zvi-still. I like it.

Good read, but I was surprised at how little he and the other pros he met knew their own decks. So he tested some against the field, then wrote out a decklist on the plane, played three games, then took a deck he had never played...? If I made the trip to a GP in order to earn Pro Points, I think I would want to play some time with the deck, as I think theorizing can only take you so far. What really impresses me is that he apparently played that slow-as-hell-deck well enough to avoid any draws at all.

Gavin is the best writer at SCG by far even if you take into account the premium writers. I hate tournament reports tho, so I did not enjoy this article nearly as much as I enjoy all of his other articles. If you are looking to improve your game I can recommend reading all of his articles as I believe they can definately help a lot of players.

Extremely well-written. Loved it.

Since the first competitive Legacy tournaments in 2005, Landstill has won a large US tournament exactly one time (by Konsultant). I think he should have stuck with his "Plane Brew," which is really sexy.
