View Full Version : Tap an untapped wizard you control.
The Legacy Weapon

My group has one more issue I need explained because I don't quite understand how to explain it without confusing them. I played an Azami, Lady of Scrolls and it resolved. I then went to tap her to draw a card when they argued about it. They cried, "summoning sickness!" and I tried to explain why I could do it. They, of course, thought I was trying to cheat so I just need a ruling. I was told that the wording on the card creates a static ability that is controlled by the player therefore tapping an untapped wizard would be a cost that you would pay to draw cards. I don't know if that's right but I know I should be allowed to do it.

With regards to what you told your friends, there is no static ability involved: Azami's is a regular activated ability just like any other.
The difference between "T: do stuff" and "Tap this creature: do stuff" (or "Tap a creature: do stuff") is written out in the rules:
212.3f. (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/) A creature (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#creature)'s activated ability (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#activated_ability) with the tap (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#tap) symbol or the untap (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#untap) symbol in its activation cost (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#activation_cost) can't be played unless (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#unless) the creature (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#creature) has been under its controller (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#control__controller)'s control (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#control__controller) since the start of his or her most recent turn. A creature (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#creature) can't attack (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#attack) unless (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#unless) it has been under its controller (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#control__controller)'s control (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#control__controller) since the start of his or her most recent turn. This rule is informally called the "summoning sickness (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#summoning_sickness__informal_)" rule. Ignore this rule for creatures (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#creature) with haste (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#haste) (see rule 502.5 (http://www.yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#R502.5.)).
Since the ability does not have the {Tap} symbol, you can use the ability before the creature begins a turn under your control. Lots of crystal keep rulings on it.
