Why can't elves be as good as goblins?

The Deck:

4 AEther Vial

4 Nettle Sentinel

3 Wolf-Skull Shaman
4 Bloodline Shaman
4 Wren's Run Vanquisher
4 Wellwisher
2 Eladamri, Lord of Leaves
4 Priest of Titania
1 Viridian Zealot

4 Imperious Perfect
4 Elvish Champion

4 Sylvan Messenger

12 Forest
3 Wasteland
3 Wirewood Lodge

Some of the guys have similarities to the goblin tribe, but the deck works a lot differently. Like the Merfolk decks going around, this build is reliant on the Lords, but unlike Merfolk it can function without them.

Cards:

Nettle Sentinel: A 2/2 Vigilance for G. Pretty good.

Vial: Goes in aggro decks.

Bloodline Shaman: A powerhouse. This card is nuts by itself, but combined with Wolf-Skull Shaman it gets out of hand.

Wolf-Skull Shaman: I started running out of good elves, and this guy makes wolves that clog up the ground while you're looking for a Champ or Eladamri to forestwalk.

Wren's Run Vanquisher: The 3/3 Nettle Sentinel that kills everything. Pretty good against Tarmogoyf.

Priest of Titania: Powers out what you draw with Messenger, sometimes it draws Swords away from more threatening creatures because people are afraid of what you can do with like 50 mana.

Wellwisher: The sad fact is most decks can't race a Wellwisher. Burn decks have to throw fire at them, buying you time to beat. As long as your affinity opponent doesn't go nuts you can survive a few turns of that too. Wellwisher shines in the Landstill matchup. Too good not to use.

Sylvan Messenger: Elf Ringleader. Enough said.

Eladamri, Lord of the danceLeaves: Giving all your guys shroud is pretty good, especially off a Vial.

Elvish Champ: The winner of the deck. Tons of decks these days use forests to play Tarmogoyfs and Mongeese or whatever. Take your elves for a walk in the woods, straight to your opponents life total!

Imperious Perfect: Another Lord. Also makes chump blockers/ more guys at EOT. A solid elf.

Wasteland: The original build I had used Llanowar Reborn over this. Then I said "This is so vulnerable to Wasteland. Huh, let's use Wasteland instead". It's hard to play GG guys, but Wasteland is so good.

Wirewood Lodge: Untaps Wellwisher, Perfect, Priest, Bloodline Shaman. Also does nutty things in combat with Wren's Run Vanquisher. It's alright.

Forest: What I want to see my opponents play.

What I want the deck to do:

Due to the high concentration of Forests in Legacy I wanted to build a deck that could abuse this. This deck plays a ton of good creatures, then a Champ or Eladamri comes down and it's game over. With Vial the deck is resistant to counterspells and the creatures are high quality. The hardest matches are the ones where they have a fast clock, like Affinity and Burn. These matchups can get better after sideboarding.

Ahoi,

I would replace Priest of Titania by Llanowar Elves, because Titania is good to abuse mana, but you want to be aggresive and a 1/1 for 2 mana isn't aggro enough. Also a turn one Llanowar Elves will boost you turn two into your Elve Lords! ... As addition only 8 one drops is not enough for a aggro deck which want to drop something every turn.

In my opinion another must for this deck is at least one Pendelhaven!

Caller of the Claw could be an option in the Sideboard for the control matchups, if not already considered ... ;)

Other options for Elves ...

- Quirion Ranger (acceleration)
- Rhys the Redeemed (late game)
- Skyshroud Elite (aggro)
- Twinblade Slasher (aggro)
- Wirewood Symbiote (protection)
- Talara's Battalion (aggro)
- Wilt-Leaf Liege (late game)
- Garruk Wildspeaker (late game)

You may want to take a look on this list:

6 Forest
3 Windswept Heath
2 Wooded Foothills
3 Savannah
4 Gaea's Cradle

4 Fyndhorn Elves
4 Llanowar Elves
3 Birchlore Rangers
4 Quirion Ranger
4 Wirewood Symbiote
4 Priest of Titania
4 Elvish Champion
3 Mirror Entity
4 Gempalm Strider
4 Tribal Forcemage
4 Sylvan Messenger

The plan is to get as much mana as possible to drop as many creatures as possible and pump them all as much as possible. Mirror Entity is by far the best card in the deck and running 4 should be easy, but you can always use Garruk instead if you don't like splashing colors.

I know you haven't posted any boarding plans, but it looks weak to any deck that plans on not using the combat step.

That said, what about Thorn of Amethyst in the board, being a 38 creature deck.

Hey, Patrick, many people tried to have success wiht pure aggro "goblin-like" elves and as many people failed.

Some differences:
Gobbs have 12 ways to cheat mana (4 Lackey, 4 Vial, 4 Warchief), your deck have only 8 (4 Priest, 4 Vial)
Gobbs have 8 superb T1 plays(4 Lackey, 4 Vial), you have only 4 vial.
Gobbs have 4 Fanatics and 4 Gempalm/Warren Wierding to deal with creatures (8 ways to push Lackey through early blocker), you have 0.
Gobbs have 4 Fanatics and some Seige-Gangs as another way to deal damage (say, against Moat), you have 0.
Gobbs have 4 tutors, so they can pack some maindeck singletons (like Tin-Street Hooligan, Goblin King, Wort or Earwig Squad), you have 0.
Gobbs with black have some chances to win game 2/3 against combo (mana denial, Chalice/Thorn, Cabal Therapy, Earwig Squad), your chances are 0 (well, 4 Thorns in SB will give you some, but still close to 0).

If you still not convinced:
1st step is to run mana denial lands: 4 Wastelands + 3/4 Ports are A MUST for you, Wirewood Lodge MUST NOT be in deck.
2nd, don't run Wellwishers maindeck - you're aggro, you need to beat, not to heal yourself.
And 3rd. Eladamri is crap, it's the proven fact.

Elf tribe can be competitive (Survival NO-Genitus elves), but plain aggro is not an option if you want to win.
If you want to have fun, well, Nonex pointed the right direction.

I wrote a thread in the established forums awhile back explaining Elf aggro. I think you should take a look at it: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11060
