I know Teferi shuts down suspended spells, but how does he respond to the free spells triggered by Cascade? I think they'll be unplayable but that's more gut feeling than rules knowledge.

Your gut feeling is right.

Usually when you play a spell with Cascade, it triggers, you reveal and you get a chance to play the first revealed spell that is cheap enough. Now with Teferi in play, he sees that the original spell is still on the stack which means that you couldn't play a sorcery which means that you can't play the spell revealed with cascade.

Even if the original spell was countered before the cascade ability resolves, it still would not be possible to play that spell because the cascade ability itself is still on the stack.
