Attach v. Equip

Can someone clear this up for me. There was some confusion recently.

Like for Cranial Plating? Playing the 2 black mana to attach it can be done at instant speed. For example, after they declare blockers, you can attach it to a creature unblocked.

Equipping it can only be done at sorcery speed, so you don't get the benefit of combat tricks.

Additionally, Equipping implicitly targets (it's built into the rules), where as a card like Ronin War Club can be attached to a creature with Shroud when it comes into play (because it doesn't have the word target on that ability where as a card like Cranial Plating does have the word target on it's attach ability).
