Congrats on top 4 guys.
All of the decklists are in the top8 thread.
edit - Also, I threw that bracket together pretty hastily, I'll see if I can get a better one going.

(aww, now that I typed it I'll loose next round...)

Hey, this entire tourney has been missing out on some sweet trash talk. Might as well start now.

I may be able to play this weekend. For future opponents, my time zone is PST. What time works for you, TheWes? No guarantees, yet.
Will someone post the entire top 8 on deckcheck later? Would be cool if I finally get a deck in there :P
Also, good luck in the final 4s!

Deckcheck doesn't do sections for Non-sanctioned formats. This doesn't really belong on there.

Right, but that was Legacy. This whole tournament is an experiment to see what would happen if Goyf weren't legal. A format without Goyf can hardly be called Legacy.

Doh!
Somehow forgot this was all sans Goyf.

4eak takes it 2-1 and MWS is a bitch.
But at least to both of us on roughly the same level, which means it was a fair and square win.
I win 2-1. It was a tight match. We were goldfishing. Mulls decided our fates.
G1: I win the roll, open with a 7-lander, and throw it back for Lackey, Lackey, Land, Land, Chief, Ringleader. Van Phanel forces the first, but I resolve the second. I draw into a Piledriver and seal the game.
G2: I am forced to mull to 4, ouch. Despite that, I had a turn 5 clock when Piledriver resolved my second turn. I had a single port that bought a little bit of time, but Van Phanel played gracefully around it. The singleton Blessing (which unfortunately wasn't revealed until the last 8 cards) forced Van Phanel to do some acrobatics. He was down to his last Wish in his library and had to Brainfreeze himself to get Flash to Wish for Stroke in response to my trigger. If the Blessing was any higher in the deck, it would have been very difficult to Stroke me out. Van Phanel played awesomely.
G3: Van Phanel mulls to 5, ouch. I don't know if Force was in the mix (although he had it at the end). I drop Vial, and next turn Fanatic was played and Lackey was Vialed. SGC and Warchief hit play turn 3, and Vialed Goblin King ends the match on turn 4.
peace,

I pretty much knew all the decks in the top 8 before pairings (minus P. Shift, his choice eluded me). I tried to figure out the matchups before hand. My bracket showed Van Phanel beating me at this exact point in the tournament. I was wrong (but obviously not complaining).
If The Wes moves to the Finals, I honestly don't think I have a chance. I think I have decent odds against the Fish deck though. So, as bad as it sounds, go pi4meterftw!

In fact yes, I did have a Fow in my opener. But as you were obviously thinking about wether to drop Lackey or Vial, I couldn't afford going down to three cards just to see Lackey coming into play turn 2 anyway. My only out at this point was lucksacking into Brainstorm + goodness and I needed those Forces as cards to put back for the Brainstorm.

You ended the game with 2 in hand. I thought it might be possible to Force both Lackey and Vial, or draw into the blast. It would have cost you 3-4 cards to do it, but it would have slowed me down a lot I think, especially if I didn't get a 4th land. I'm sure you played it correctly though.

I lost 1-2 to The Wes. Game 1 locked. Game 2 aggro beats. Game 3 locked and mana screwed slightly. (Got 2 lands in 12 (well more but after 12 it didn't really matter), but he had a waste.)
The Wes

Confirmed, 2-1 The Wes. Game 1 armageddon into tabernacle saved me from a 8/8 angel. Game 2 I think a 8/8 took me down, even my humility couldn't save me. Game 3 went T1 chalice for 1, T2 wasteland, T3 chalice for zero and trini, a few turns later I got stax going with crucible. Good games.

Goblins vs. Stax, huh?
IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN!
Skeggi
06-02-2009, 05:30 AM
Well... Stax should win that match-up... could it be true? Could Stax win a reasonable big online tournament? And what's more important: would this Stax build survive in an environment that does have Goyf?
Also, was the metagame that much different? What decks did better/worse? is there a possibillity for a metagame breakdown? 8 different decks in top 8 instead of lots of thres/CB. No CB/Top in top 8 also. Only 1 combo deck. 24 Force of Will however.
The Wes
06-02-2009, 11:40 AM
Well, there is nothing different between this stax and the stax I normally play in a goyf environment. Though I haven't taken this variation to a RL tourney yet, I have been playing it for the last several months. Not saying it would do well there, we all know stax just craps out on itself now and again. I've been lucky in that its never crapped out on me two games in a row so far this tourney.

I'd bet on Goblins. First, we're talking about a build with MD artifact hate. Second, we're talking about Stax with a rather small anti-creature suite (4 Prisons, 3 Humilitys, 2 O-Rings). Third, Goblins still runs Vial and Lackey.

Well, overall I'm not worried about the artifact destruction, what artifacts do I have that really hurt goblins besides a turn 1 chalice for 1 or trini, if I'm on the play? Once a lackey or vial comes down my artifacts arn't much of a help. If I win this its going to be on the back of the enchants or armageddoning into a tabernacle, I do still run 2 of them.
My only defense against stax crapping out on itself is that I have played different variations of armageddon stax almost excusively for 3 years now. I'm pretty good at knowing what it can and can't do and when I need to mull.
I think the Stax deck has a lot of relevant pieces against my goblins deck. I ran a few games against it, and I think Stax has the upperhand here. I think my goblins deck has a heightened set of requirements to keep a hand against him, and I think his good hands will trump mine. MD Artifact hate is pretty nice to have. I still have a chance of course, as the match can be decided by the roll of a die, and the first turn play sets the pace.
peace,
4eak
Congratulations to The Wes! He won, 2-1.
G1: I win the roll.
I drop Vial, he drops Plains.
I drop Piledriver, he drops Tomb/Prison, and his endstep I Vial Lackey.
I connect with Lackey and drop SGC, and he drops CoW.
Attack for 2, putting him at 15, and he drops another Prison, after a good deal of thought, end step I Matron for Sharpshooter instead of Tinkerer. My thought was that I probably wouldn't be coming back from a Geddon/Humility/Tabernacle no matter what, so I needed to race him.
He Geddons, I ping with SGC in response taking him to 11 (Tomb damage helps), end step Vial the Sharpshooter.
I drop a sandbagged Mire and then Fanatic, he drops a land passes.
I drop port, he Geddons, I ping with SGC and Sharpshooter in response to 8 life.
I pass, he drops a land.
I pass, he drops land/mox (pitching Tabernacle)->Humility, in response I sac Fanatic and shoot twice with Sharpshooter to 5 (for style points), and scoop it up to a hardlock.
G2: -4 Incinerators +4 Grip (pillars were iffy in testing)
Vial, he needles it
Port him upkeep.
Matron for Tinkerer, he needles Tinkerer and plays Trinisphere
Waste a Tomb, drop Tink and swing for 1, he drops a land and passes.
Mire, Grip, Tink, and he sacs Canopy and drops Savannah.
Vial Chief, swing with the lot to 12, and he does 2x Flagstones for some Plains.
Vial Ringleader into SGC/Pildriver/Matron
G3: Okay, I'm not going turn by turn on this match because we go for 25 turns. He locked me out early, and I did my best to squeeze damage through. There were numerous points in this game where I had very odd choices to make. I was forced to port him carefully in order to avoid Geddon and Humility for a lengthy portion of the game, which slowed down my ability to swing through Ghostly Prisons.
In this game, I faced 3 Prisons, 1 Humility, 2 pithing needles, 2 CoW's (TSH on one), 1 Suppression Field, Trinisphere, and an O-Ring on a vital Tinkerer. I didn't draw Grips until it was way too late, and lost my 2nd/last Taiga shortly after my 2nd Grip. I did get him to 7 life before he stabilized with a full board lock and Mishra recursion to my single humiliated beater.
Ghostly Prison was the MVP against me. Turn 4 goldfish hands turned into rubbish under it, and it bought him time to snowball into stacked Prisons and the deadlier Humility. Given the information I had about his hand and considering the odds of what was likely to be in his hand at any given point in the game, I think I played as well as could be expected.
Good games!
peace,
4eak

If the wasteland gets down to 3rd/4th place, Van Phanel I want it, is that cool with you? If we both want it I'm sure we could work something out, but when I ebayed everything but goyf it was all in the 10-15$ range, so if you just want value, I'd rather take the wasteland, which is at the lower end of the spectrum.

We'll see what 4eak takes. I'd aprecciate anything that is not the Spirit Monger, because those GP-foils are way too common here.
I'm going to choose the card that is really most useful to me. I choose Wasteland.

Alright, the Piledriver goes to pi4meterftw and the Spirit monger goes to me. I lose two pretty boring games against Vial + Mage + Mulligan to sixc in game 1 and 2 Meddling Mage + Thorn + 2 FoW + Mulligan to five in game2.
