So many of us are spread across the state and we all seem to want to grow the format here in Texas. I figured having a new thread for all of us to BS in would be a good idea.

Our plan right now is to run a Legacy event on the same day as our boat cruise event. The boat cruise event would start at 9 or 10 with the Legacy event starting at 2-3pm.
We're thinking about a $15-20 entry fee. Prizes would include (very likely) a Beta Dual, Italian Tabernacle and some Revised Duals. We've also got some neat altered art cards to throw in for door prizes possible (Cabal Therapy, Hymn, and a few others).
Right now, we're just trying to feel out what type of prizes would get players to travel for such and event.
It would be hosted in Waco and that's a relatively decent middle ground for everyone except those coming up from Corpus Christi.
Oh, the date would be August 15th.

Sounds awesome. My best friend moved to Texas a few years back and has been bitching about the lack of Magic ever since. I'll tell him to get on here(the source) because I'm pretty sure he'd be down for some Legacy in Texas.

I'm going to see if some of the other Houstonians would be down for this. Just to clarify, the Legacy event wouldn't require cruise tickets right?
Also, I'm wondering if we can try to alternate larger events between Waco, Houston, and wherever else has a significant Legacy presence. If we did a big tournament roughly once every 3 or 4 months, rotating the location might make it easiest to get the best turnouts. I personally would travel a resonable distance every few months just for a sizeable Legacy crowd. But I'm sure good prize support or maybe a cash game would attract more peeps. Anyway, let's get one mutli-city Texas event done and see how it goes.

I'd have no problem working something out for rotating events. Jim Shuman and myself run JDS Events (www.jdsevents.com). If players are honestly going to dedicate to attending these events, we can definitely work with local stores/dealers and make something happen around the state every few months.
We're kind of in the same boat right now though. We'd like to line up one or two good events and see how large a prize we could confortably give away with our expected attendance.

Another reason Waco works is that I can use my store, The Game Closet, (www.thegamecloset.com) and/or several cheap spaces around town that I've used in the past and have an established relationship with.
Waco is also a resonable distance from San Antonio (3 hours), Dallas (1.5), Austin (1.5), and Houston (3). But, I do think it would be fair and unconvenient to rotates events from city to city. I can definitely look into making something happen. As long as attendance is there, we'll gladly put up quality prizes.

A lot of people are on holiday, so don't get discouraged if the response isn't so great these next couple of days. I should be coming with 2 other people.
I know txgamers has been dead, but it couldnt hurt to make a post over there.

Myself and a half dozen friends are all for legacy in Houston (especially north Houston) but we aren't willing to drive more than a half hour or so for Magic. o.O
We are, however, organizing a small legacy tournament at Fat Ogre (www.fatogre.com), probably to be held on 6/13. We have about 4 ppl that are guaranteed to be there, and looking for at least 4 more...

We had a good turnout today. 16 people in the tournament, and 2 more showed up right after we started, so there could have been 18.
It sounds like several people are down to make the trip out to Waco on August 15th. The only thing is that GenCon is happening at the same time, so a few people are going to that. I posted about it on the local store's website, but we have 4 people from our group interested so far.

Hey Drew,
I wish I had a better answer but the scene has gone downhill =(
I pretty much gave up on Legacy after the GP... that 6-3 finish really crushed my soul. I sold my collection in March (yeah, all the Beta's/foils) and have been drafting ever since.
I actually stopped by there Saturday and there were only 9 people there and they were all pretty bad.... =(
Oh well, maybe I'll get a hard-on for Leg in a few months

Aw man Eric. You sold your stuff? Well, the Magic cycle is a strange thing. Especially the Legacy cycle. Seems like Austin and Dallas is getting less interested while Houston is getting more. Well, when you get that Legacy itch again dude, holla at me.
PowrDragn, is it possible to do a Legacy event sometime other than August 15th? There's like 4+ people in Houston who would come to Waco if it didn't conflict with GenCon. Plus, one of the guys who is not going to GenCon, has his girlfriend's birthday that weekend. Let me know.

That blows. I am going to be around Dallas the last weekend of this month and I was going to stop by and play.
So maybe August 15th will work anyway. I'll come, but I'm not sure if too many other people from Houston still will since so many others aren't. I will say that there would probably be 6+ people from Houston who would go if it were not on the same weekend as GenCon.

I'm slightly offended by that. Then again I did go without a single game loss last Saturday until my deck crapped on me in the finals. It's an easy meta, but hardly representational of Legacy as a whole.

Nice. Just know that we haven't had 18 players on a regular basis yet. But hey, that could change. And yes, there are actually quite a few EDH players at Asgards. I still haven't made an EDH deck yet, but I will soon since so it's what all the cool people are doing.

We've never come to one of your events. We are on the north side of Houston in The Woodlands/Conroe area. I know that some of my group wouldn't make that drive, but at least 2 of us would come out once a month. Possibly more.
I've been more and more impressed with you asgard guys. I posted my email on your forums and I had about 5 replies within a day regarding times/events.
So kudos on supporting your local games. Wish we had more of that on the north side.

Man, you guys sure don't like to drive to events. The Portland crew drives up to Seattle for large events at least a few times a year...that's about a three or three and a half hour drive to bring home some dual lands or Forces.

I've been playing for about six years now and there has never been a decent magic community where I live. Especially not for Legacy. In fact, I don't really know why I got into legacy in the first place. I guess I liked the idea of my deck not dropping out of legality whenever new sets came out. I've just been collecting staples over the years and whenever an event comes up that is within a reasonable distance for driving, I go. What is the metagame like where you guys play?

Dude! You could buy Forces & Duals for the cost of gas for that trip :)
I understand travelling to play though - going to GenCon this year to play in the big Legacy event...

The trick is the split the gas four ways, then bring home the Forces and/or Duals.
If a large, Texan Legacy Event were to be organized and held, where should it be? Houston? Austin? A Duel for Dual sized event, or a Frackas for Fetches. Or a Battle of Wits for...well, stuff.
Let's see...with a $20 buy in, to give away a set of duals, you'd need at least 50 players. Twenty five or so (probably? I haven't run the numbers on that) for a set of fetchlands. Could enough players be assembled for that? I don't really want to put up a set of duals and have twenty people show up.

Are you in Texas or Oregon?
It would not be very smart to have 1000$ guaranteed. No one (I am pretty sure) is saying that. I'm sure if this happens there might be a small prize guaranteed and packs added to the pool for good attendance. And if attendance is good, then the tournaments could start being held every so often.

Road trips with awesome people are one of my favorite parts of PTQs. I regularly drive three hours from Seattle to Canada and Portland to battle. I went to Boise (eight hours) once.

Portland now (well, actually, Oregon State is an hour and a half south of the Portland Legacy 'scene'). I'll be in College Station in the fall for Grad School for the next two to five years or so (sorry, introduced myself in the other Texas thread).
Here in the NW, promising prizes are about the only way to get people to show up. Plus, really, 50 people shouldn't be that hard to assemble (although we've had trouble breaking even on fetches here). But if 16 (plus two late people) were willing to meet for a regular, booster pack event a few weekends ago in Houston, a playset of duals ought to attract a lot more players.
I was just trying to get a feel for things...if people are enthusiastic, I could spring for a set of fetches and hold a tournament if I could work a deal with a shop (so that I don't get hosed on the prizes; I'd be perfectly happy to break even and play Legacy all day).
Jobs/School/Wives/GF's/Business = not a lot of time to spend driving. Plus, I hate driving/riding anywhere further away than 10 minutes. :P
That's a rather weak excuse.

Team road trips are awesome. Splitting gas four ways = fun times, cheap gas, and a big Legacy tournament. (College Station, not Austin....Gig 'em Aggies)
Anyways, I might be willing to organize a larger Legacy Event if a shop would host it (and make a fair deal of it). Fetchlands might be a smarter start than Duals...prizes can always be boosted if extra players participate, but maybe it's smarter to guarantee a set of fetches for the first event, rather than risk a ten person turnout for a set of duals.

There are some venues in Houston where I think you might find something. I totally agree on the fetch's. If a Houston tournament was made with a set of fetch's I would deff show. I know a couple other people that would come as well. Maddox probably won't, but it's ok we have other people in our group.
And if there was a big duel for duals in Waco I would be willing to make a trip out for the weekend or whatever. I think it would be a blast, and would draw quite a crowd. I probably wouldn't be able to make it out more than annually or something, but I could at least do that. There really isn't anything like that going on in TX right now.
At the very least, it's good to see people at least trying to organize some serious legacy in TX. It's dead north Houston. I know it's still alive southside, but still.

So is there going to be an event or not? I'm getting mixed signals from the posts. I live on the border of Oklahoma and Texas so Waco is only a 2 and 1/2 hour drive for me. Plus I have a friend in Lancaster that I can stay with if its for a whole weekend. Traveling is no big deal for me but I'll need time in advance to ask off from work and plan out the trip. I'd really like to attend a Legacy event. I have so many decks I'd like to play.

August 22nd - locals events for entry into $5K plus prizes
August 29th - $5K Dallas

OK guys, here's what I think we're going to go with:
Legacy Challenge Event
Waco, TX
Saturday August 1st 2009
Reg: 1:00pm
Start: 2:00pm
Format: Legacy
Entry: $15
1st - Foreign Black Border Savannah
2nd - Italian Tabernacle at Pendrall Vale
3rd- Revised Dual Land
4th – Revised Dual Land
5th – 8th 3 packs each
Every player after the 20th entrant will add to the prize pool.
We have plenty of stuff to add to the prize pool including lots of dual lands, Lion's Eye Diamonds, DCI Judge Foils, etc.
The prizes listed above are the MINIMUM gauranteed prizes. It's very likely that we should go over the 20 person threshold as well, since this will begin after the third round of the Cash and Cruise tournament we are holding earlier that day.
Does something like this work for you guys and gals?

There is actually a place her ein town we're trying to close a deal with. This way we will be 100% certain we have enough space (unless a ridiculous crowd shows up of course).
My store can reasonably hold about 70-85 without too much effort. But, with two events going, we're not sure that will be enough space, so I'm shopping the local venues right now.
I'm pretty sure we've got a place lined up that we'll have posted shortly.

Honestly, the event is a go, I'm just dealing with two people (at two different venues) currently about food arrangements and such.
Regardless, either place is within a 5 minute drive of The Game Closet, so it's not a huge deal, but hopefully within the next couple of hours I will have the final venue address.
We are trying to make this as good of an event for you guys as possible.

I'm sad to be unable to attend (stupid work!), but I wish all of you the best of luck and hope the tournament works out well! (and hopefully profitably for the organizers, so you can hold more tournaments in the future).

I was just talking about this event to some of my friends today.
I think I have 5 in my group that will be attending.

OK, it looks like the final venue will be Poppa Rollo's Pizza in Waco,TX!
They've got a reasonable sized back room that can seat about 150 or so pretty comfortably. Pizza nad drink service will be available for purchase. We are working out a deal to try and get everyone some food/meals cheap (probably something like $5 for pizza and a drinks).
This should work out well for everyone though. Official details should be on jdsevents.com as they come available.
Good to hear that we are getting more players excited to show up.

Howdy, folks. Alright, where can I get in on some Legacy? I'm in College Station, have a car (for now, at least), and I'm itching to play some Legacy and some EDH. So, where are y'all?

October seems like it's going to be a big month in Texas for Legacy :)
October 3rd weekend, there's going to be another tournament in Waco (you can see the tournament announcement here: http://www.texasmagiczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2254)
Some of us Houston guys will be showing up for that.
October 17th weekend is PT Austin and apparently there are actually going to be Legacy events on Friday and Sunday!
I'm in Houston (a couple of us from my play group also post on here too), so if you're ever in town, let us know! We normally play on Sundays. (Here's the forum for the store we play at: http://www.asgardgames.net/forums/index.php?board=5.0)
For Texas MTG in general, you may want to sign up at www.texasmagiczone.com. Be warned though, things can get pretty insane on TMZ :)

I see signs for Waco on my drive to College Station from Houston. Do you Houstonians go through CS on your way to the Waco Events? I'd me more than happy to chip in gas and a share of a hotel room if you pick me up on the weekend of the 3rd.
Asgard games looks like 1:40 without traffic from A&M, so I'll probably only make big events. But that October 3rd event looks cool, and the event on the 17th in Austin looks awesome.

One of the most commonly traveled routes from Houston to Waco is on Highway 6 and that should run right through college station.
However, I'm her ein Waco, so you'll need to work it out with those guys :)

Do you guys plan to run any tournaments with power (or equivalents of) as prizes for your tournaments? If so can the person running them please PM me for an exciting opportunity. It is related to wizards sponsorship.

We've considered it, but we wanted to make sure we had support behind our events before going for the really big prizes.

Hey, anyone still going to this from Houston? Like I said, I'm in College Station, and I'd gladly chip in for gas or food or something to make it worth your time to pick me up. I'm dying for some Legacy.
Thanks.
