View Full Version : Copying Loops
I was bored and bursting with curiosity so...
Is it possible to cast X amounts of Forks/Reiterate/Twincast/Wild Richochet/ or even Mirror Sheen to create an infinite loop of some sort?
Not even a loop with an end result, just a loop... like
1) Play Fork copying X
2) Play Twincast Copying Fork (Fork #2)
3) Play Reiterate Copying Twincast (TwinCast #2)
4) Fork #2 Copying Reiterate (Reiterate #2)
5) Twincast 2# copying Fork 2# (Fork #3)
6) Ad naseaum (not the card lol)
I'm just confused to how this would work at all??
Again its not like im trying to accomplish anything here, Im not copying spell X infinite times (although that would be nice) no im just wondering how a 'copy' loop would work if it does work at all.
Thanks

I think you can just go:
Dark Ritual (or any spell)
Fork A
Fork B targetting Fork A
Fork B resolves (we're assuming goldfish here) so we get Fork C, which we let target Fork A. Fork C resolves, making Fork D, targetting Fork A again. This wouldn't really do anything though- the copies aren't played, so no storm or anything. I'm also pretty sure you can't use the loop to draw the game, as you're capable of stopping it (stop targetting Fork, start targetting Dark Ritual) and so you'd have to after naming a number of times to do the "original" (useless) loop.
Edit: I'm no judge, so don't take my word for it. Fork can be replaced with Twincast.
It "works" as far as being able to Fork an arbitrary number of times, but can't create an unbounded loop to draw the game.

If you counter the original spell (dark ritual in the example), then it will create a draw, won't it?
K thanks for clearing that up for me, i was convinced you needed 3 copy effects but i forgot you could simply keep targeting the 1st copy effect.
Yeah this is all pretty useless, but now im forced to ask, is there anyway you can actually take X copy effects and actually do something to win with them? And i mean these crappy copy effects not the izzet guildmage combo. It's probably impossible i can't think of a senario where you could make a bunch of copies of a useful spell.
Otherwise thanks for clearing up the interaction and if you could force a draw with it.

It was mentioned above:
Spell
Wild Ricochet (Targetting spell)
Fork (Target Ricochet)
You need a reusable or multi-copy effect to go infinite. I think that means Guildmage, Mirror Sheen, Reiterate, or Wild Ricochet.

yeah i figured i would need a reusable copy effect, although i don't know how Ricochet would acomplish that?

Anyway i have another question....
in this example
Spell X
Fork A targetting spell X
Fork B targetting Fork A
you can't go infinite and draw, because you have choices to make and thus the 'loop' can end.
But what if Spell X is countered? Couldn't you force a draw in that manner?
For example
Spell X
In response Fork A targetting spell X
In response Fork B targetting Fork A
In response Counterspell targeting spell X
wouldn't that leave you with basically a fork and a 'copyied' fork with no choice other than to copy the other fork, becomign a loop with only mandatory choices?

No. The Default for Fork B when it resolves is to create a copy of Fork A with target Spell X. You choose to change the target to Fork A. You can always not make that choice. If Spell X is no longer on the stack because Spell X has been countered than the copy of Fork A created by Fork B will be countered on resolution as will the original Fork A.

Sorry, brainfart. For some stupid reason I though that Wild Ricochet created two copies instead of just one.

There's also a second reason why it doesn't work: since Fork B hasn't yet gone to the graveyard when New Fork is being created, you could choose Fork B as its target and then New Fork would fizzle. Sort of how you can use Misdirection to counter Counterspell.
