So I go to price blue duals for tossing together a Countertop deck, and I find much to my chagrin that Underground Sea is going for about $60 a pop. I manage to locate Volcanics for 25, Tropicals for 27, Tundras for 28, but the lowest Sea I can find is $56.

WTF is Sea going for nearly twice the price of any other blue Dual Land? Discuss.

Vintage.

Stupid 2-color formats.

I don't think it's vintage. Sea has always been the best dual in vintage, it's not like anything recent has changed that, or made it better.

Rise of Ad Naseam? I don't know, but it sucks. I don't even have many fetchlands, so you're still a step ahead of me :P

Yeah, fetches are almost on par with duals themselves. I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that revised seas will hit $100 apiece sometime next year so get them while they're cheap. Just remember to reference this thread in a year so you can feel like a dick for flaming me for making an obvious prediction. They aren't printing any more and SCG is doing their best to fuck the market by buying up as many as they can. Also, remember to thank a european magic player when you get a chance. Ha, jk, I'm Italian.

Close. It's because TES started playing them, clearly.

It's not even the most played legacy dual.. so mostly vintage driven.

Tez/vault/key decks make 46% of the vintage metagame at the moment, and it's U/b.

Ugh. I haven't checked the prices since I got the two I needed. Actually, I haven't checked dual prices at all since I managed to haphazardly gather enough resources (mtg, not money) to concoct a half-assed IRL manabase for my deck. I was shocked at the increase in the price of fetches, although it makes sense. Considering that I got my two Seas for thirty bucks each back in September, however, I suspect that they're currently artificially high, and may well settle lower (but still too high). On the other hand, I know nothing about Vintage, so maybe it's not all that artificial.

I look at it this way, however: sooner or later, some sort of change may well come. I mean, Mana Drain was banned just for its price tag, right? Sooner or later, the glue that keeps our format together will be refreshed. Well, maybe not--but that's my hope. I won't be buying duals or fetches any time in the foreseeable future, however.

If this happens mine are going on E-Bay real quick.

Thank God I have 8 of them so I won't run out anytime soon.

Heh, I probably gave away at least 8 Seas in the last year. Oh well.

Yeah, Vintage right now is really Tezzeret Vault heavy, and they're all UBx, so I'd say Vintage is the main culprit. That, and UB has always been hella expensive.

It's mostly because of SCG's upping their prices and giving away so much money for their duals. After their 5ks are over, I'm pretty sure that the prices will drop again.
