This is a post to resolve a dispute:

My opponent has a Grixis Grimblade in play, a multicolored permanent and two creatures with Exalted. I have a Sacellum Archers in play. He declares the Grimblade as an attacker. Per rule 308.1 the Exalted abilites trigger and go on the stack and he gains priority. He then implicitly passes priority. I activate the Archer's ability targeting the Grimblade. We both implicitly pass priority and the Archer's ability resolves and deals 2 damage to the Grimblade. State based effects are checked before the next item on the stack resolves and the Grimblade is sent to the graveyard before the Exalted triggers can resolve per 420.5c. Both Exalted triggers are countered per 413.2a and the Declare Attackers step ends.

His argument is that I can't use the Archer's ability against the Grimblade before it gets the Exalted bonus because the bonus applies instantaneously after it is declared as an attacker.

You are right (including the explanation)

Exalted is a triggered ability an can be responded to.

Yep, just look at the exalted wording:

Whenever a creature you control attacks, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn

It's worded just like any other triggered ability, so it functions like one too.
