Nightmare
07-02-2009, 08:20 AM
Tuesday night, sometime between 11pm and 7am Wednesday, my car was broken into. The thief stole my backpack which contained my legacy deck, and my Elder Dragon Highlander deck. The important things in those decks were:
4 Force of Will (altered to the Fantastic 4, signed)
4 Foil Japanese Daze
4 Foil Tarmogoyf
3 Foil Stifle
4 Foil Aether Vial
6 Foil Signed blue fetchlands
2 Beta Trops
1 FBB Trop
4 Wastelands (1 foil)
4 Mutavaults
2 Foil Japanese Relic of Progenitus
3 Foil Krosan Grips
2 Sower of Temptation
and a shit ton of Foil Merfolk.
Also, My Captain Sisay EDH deck, with a foil signed Heath, and a ton of good Green and White foils (mostly Legends) along with the artifact mana (all foil) and a Foil Chinese Mindslaver, and a Japanese Gaea's Cradle.
I'm out approximately $2000. I'm not excited about it, and as it turns out, it's not covered by insurance. Unless some kid tries to sell it to a game store locally, which is less likely than him throwing it all out, I'll never see those cards again. This is YEARS of investment and trading and tournament wins and all kinds of work, gone in an instant.
I'm not looking for handouts. I just want you guys to know, and to warn you to NEVER leave your cards somewhere where you can potentially be victimized like I was the other night. It's one of the worst feelings I've ever had.
Omg... I sure as hell hope you find them again... Best of luck man, looks like you'll need it :(
EDIT: Once, I thought I lost my deck with full power etc etc and even thou it was only gone for like 5 min or so, I was totally heartbroken and didn't know what I'll do so I can't even imagine what you must feel... :(

Sucks man. I had my cards stolen at some point too, but it was never a value that big.
Nowadays I keep most of my cards at home. When I leave for a tournament I only take the deck I play with me and a of trade binder. It greatly reduces the risk of getting completely jacked. Also because it's a light package you can easily carry it around with you, always. And never ever leave it unattended in the car ofcourse...

Man, sorry to hear that. It isn't covered by your insurance? I had a car broken into a few years ago, but homeowner's insurance ended up covering everything that was in it. It probably won't hurt to ask your agent again.
That's super lame. I'd make sure local card shops have a list of what went missing...it could still turn up.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, Adam.
I know how you feel because I too was robbed recently. Theives broke into my home and stole all the cash, jewelery, and technology items they could get their hands on. $4000 worth of stuff and the house was a mess. Strangely enough, the Magic cards were untouched. They even opened the case containing my moxen, LoA, 50+ dual lands and left everything there. Just so you know, insurance doesn't cover 100% of anything anymore. I got a check for significanlty less than what I lost.

Probably because expensive Magic cards are just worthless pieces of cardboard to most people.
I too am sorry for your loss. Hopefully your stuff will turn up somewhere so you can get it back.

Man that sucks, I know how you feel that happened to me last year, not stolen from my car they was stolen by someone I thought was a friend. You will most likely get the same attitude from your local cops I did : It's just cards why should we care. All I can say is you have some unique things that its is real easy to spot so as a legacy community we need to keep an eye out for these. Also notify every card shop in about a 200 mile radius of you because sometimes people go just outside there local area to move stuff like this thinking they will not get caught.
I don't have any real legacy stuff outside my decks at the moment but your more then welcome if you need something just to PM me.

Man. That's horrible. I know hiw it feels to have something you invested so much time and money in it go down the drain in a moment. The thing with a fully foiled deck is that it's harder for the thief not to notice that it might have some value, so he might try to sell it to someone.
What happened to you is partly the reason I stopped going to tournaments years ago and never ever spend more than 6$ in a single card. It's my hobby and I don't want some moron's greed to ruin it. Tell your story to all store owners near you and denounce the thievery to the police, because over $2000 is serious and he can end in jail. good luck!

Nightmare - I feel for you. Sorry, man. That sucks.
About the thieves, do they even know what they have on their hands? Depending on where you parked (i.e. not a gaming convention or card store), they may not realize the value of your nerdy bling collection and might unload it in a nearby trashcan, etc.

I had something similar happen. One of my "friends" had apparently made a copy of all of the keys on my ring somehow (guess he took them when we were all hanging out one night and brought them back right afterwards), and when I somehow pissed him off, he chose to get into my car when I was at a local convention and take my box. This box had everything I played with: Beta Birds, signed Beta Wraths, BB duals, all the good, current Standard/Extended cards of the time, etc. My extras/trade binders were actually with me at the time, so I had been able to keep those, but it was mostly average or jank stuff.
He ended up taking them to a store in St. Louis the next day and dumping it all for cash. When I called the store the day after that (I called all the stores there), they gave me the runaround and tried to tell me they hadn't seen any of the stuff, even though I could hear the owner in the background telling the guy on the phone to get me the Hell off the phone and to not say anything else. I went there a couple of days later to look through their singles and found some of the stuff I KNOW was mine, either via certain marks or signed in certain ways, etc. When I broached the subject with the owner, he fed me some bullshit about how they'd had that stuff for a while, etc. He just flat stonewalled me. I was so pissed.
Oh, and he did it again a few months later after I had used a good portion of the insurance check (it was covered by the car being in my dad's name while I was living with them; this was in 2000) to replace a lot of it. I didn't know how he'd gotten into the car at that time, so I'd left the stuff in the trunk again and was at a mutual friend's house, and he took all of my stuff this time: playables, trade, etc. All the cards I had left were basic lands at my house.
So, yeah, I feel your pain, Nightmare. Hopefully you can either recover theproperty or at least find out who did it so you can properly...respond.

The problem is, the local cops might not lift a finger to help you get back your stuff if you locate it. I know a guy who had an expensive guitar stolen. Two days later he found it on eBay for sale under a guy he knew's account. Despite having several pictures and eye witnesses proving that the guy I knew owned the guitar, and that it was stolen, the cops said they couldn't do anything about it.
I'm just glad I havn't been stolen from.

I feel for you Nightmare, I had a binder of 4x Foil Wrath, 4x Foil DCI C-spell, 4x Delta, 4x Strand, 4x FoW and about 6x of every FNM foil since 2004 stolen at a tourney in LA. I literally puked twice when I thought about it. I can't imagine if it was worth what you had......

Back in 2000 (I think?) I had a full set each of English Moats and English The Abyss stolen from a deck box at Neutral Ground when I wasn't looking (for like 30 seconds, which is an eternity).

I'll echo the condolences, hopefully you recover the goods. Someone should check with the stores to the north & east as well (Oneida, Utica, Watertown) to make sure that they are aware. You left this stuff in your car, really? That blows my mind...but why wouldn't it be covered either under your auto or homeowner's insurance? Is that a NY specific matter, related to your specific policy, or is your co./agent just a giant douchebag. Oh, and if you get a line on the actual person, PM me, we should talk....
PS any uniquely distinguishing features/marks/characteristics on any of the cards that would show upon inspection or to look for online? Might also want to hit some of the better known online buyers (SCG, top 5 on FindMagicCards.com, etc) as well with the sad information.

I typed in google "sell magic cards" and the top hits are/advertisements:

It might be worth emailing the 3 stores and watching ebay as mentioned.

I will guarantee that the cops won't do a damn thing. Especially with items like magic cards, which are mass produced, there is no real way to prove that they are yours.
Aside from dumpster diving and scrutinizing ebay, you should check the for-sale sections of local papers. It's a longshot, but better than nothing. More than likely he will just try to sell them all at a local card store.

Gosh, was anything else stolen? This is fairly important since that would give clues as to whether the stealer is a magic thief or just a thief. But not any regular thief would take cards. Assuming the thief doesn't play magic but took them anyway, then he must be a TEENAGER or a young adult to have knowledge that this game fetches money.
Don't give up man, all these are clues, age and everything. Chances are it's hard to find, but man, now I don't want to Pimp out anything anymore. The risk of losing just one deck is painful. I had a similar though smaller experience. I showed my Bant Survival deck to this person who was trading, and we finished a trade, I packed everything up on the table that was mine but missed my Survival deck, and when I went back it was gone. Looking around for 5 minutes, some guy said he found it on top of the drink machine. I was thinking, that's weird, who would have put it up there, and I suspected the person returning it was the person intending to steal it. And it's true, because people had been eyeing him so I guess he chickened out.
Guys, and that was just less than 5 minutes, in front of my eyes, where he took the deck. I hate douchebags. I wished I could just tie them up in a corner and take a dump on their face. I'm sorry Nightmare, take it easy and try your best.
Just this though makes me mad, reminds me of the Legacy GP Trial where they got the criminals. It was victory man.

I tried, but no one really seemed to give a shit. I even had three people tell me that he flat out told them that he did it, but nothing came of it. Part of the issue is that he was a minor (16) at the time, so they certainly didn't take it as seriously as they would have if he were 18+.

I'm really sorry to hear this :(
I actually had a large part of my collection stolen several years ago when my old house was burgaled, and at first the insurance company would not pay out due to some loophole but I had my local store owner write a cover letter about the collectable aspect of the game and how it was like stamps etc and the cards were actually of value.
He knew my deck and collection inside out and was willing to vouch for the value of Vintage Power so I luckily convinced them to pay out a % of what I lost.
So don't give up and it may be an avenue worth exploring, it's not like your EDH deck and legacy decks are not well known so you might be able to get something back.
Good luck.

This is the royal suck. I guess the only positive thing is that no one was injured.
I think your best bet after filing the police report, is to look in local trash bins and contact local dealers. If they are honest you might get lucky as someone will try to unload the whole collection and a shop/dealer will phone you up.
Unfortunately, except for modified cards they are very much like cash in that they are very difficult to prove that they are yours. Modified cards might give you more of a leg to stand on.
If you get the call you should figure out how to proceed before you get the call i.e. will the cops do anything or are you better off showing up at the guy's place with duck tape and a ball peen hammer. In the later case make sure you are willing to accept the consequences.

I can't watch youtube videos at work, but I'll assume this is MercenaryBDU's video blog, and I'll assume it's him saying something unkind in my direction.
@ Mercenary - I'm certainly not going to get into a pissing contest with you, and I'm certainly not going to apologize for anything I've said about you on these boards. I wouldn't ever say a thing on this site that I wouldn't say directly to someone in person, as anyone who I've disagreed with on the site can attest to - Ask Jack Elgin, or Chris Coppola, or any of the other strong personalities on this site.
It's a pretty cowardly person who takes a situation like this, where someone has been victimized in a significant way, and then uses it as a justification or vindication for their personal vendettas. Or even worse, uses it as a way to bring the spotlight on themselves. I don't know what your deal is, other than being a teenager with a chip on his shoulder and far too much time on his hands, but you need to grow up, and soon. It's all well and good to be an internet tough guy when you're 3000 miles away from the people you're talking about, but karma has a way of coming back to you.
If you care as much about this format, and this game, as you quite loudly assure us you do, then perhaps instead of taking advantage of the misfortune of other people (who actually positively contribute to the format), you could contribute something of substance and relevance yourself. Or don't. I don't care. Because regardless of what you may think, your existence bears no significance to my life whatsoever. I don't hate you, dude. I nothing you.

I randomly stumbled over it, when I wanted to see the recent SCG coverage.
That vid is just weak, but oh well, you guys apparently don't like each other.
I tried watchin it till the end, but I always feel like puttin a fork into my eyes or something.
I just watched it. I didn't find it entertaining, or offensive at all. It was actually painfully pathetic. If I met him, I honestly don't know whether I would console BDU for all the shit he must have taken throughout his life or if I would just ridicule him for airing such a bad video.

Wow. That video is indeed pathetic. I feel sorry for the guy that he has to spend his time like that to make himself feel better.
Not only that, but if I ever made a video of myself to post it on youtube, I'd prepare myself and at least be able to read the text I have on a sheet of paper in front of me. He took double the time that's needed to read it and stops at wrong points... .
I didn't find it offensive though. Just retarded.

A couple of things I'd like to comment: first, instead of what many people think, I think he should keep that mustache as a visual warning to everyone who may encounter him so they would know upfront they're dealing with a total and utter moron. Second: m4d r34d1ng sk1llsz! Such a smooth read

I didn't think you (or anyone) could actually speak in the same disjointed, no regard capitals or proper grammar, incorrect punctuation manner you usually post in. It baffles the mind how directly your writing correlates to your inability to speak. No offense to anyone with a condition causing a speech impediment, but Mercenary, holy fucking balls, Sally Sold Seashells By The Seashore, you can barely talk into a webcam, I can't even imagine what you are like around other people.
Poor show.

While I appreciate the support, attacking his person really shouldn't be condoned. His content, sure. His appearance, not so much. Let's keep the moral high ground here, folks.
Moral high-ground my ass, Adam. I'll welcome the warning here.
BDU, some pointers:
1) Learn to fucking read.
2) Learn to fucking shave.
3) Learn to understand why people give you shit. You are pushing content about Legacy, fine, but you're forcing your dick down peoples throats because you are "the ONLY PERSON TRYING TO HELP GARNER SUPPORT FOR THE FORMAT!!!!onE!" Give it up. No content >>>>> horribly disjointed, highly opinionated, and usually false content.
4) If you got your shit stolen, people probably would have said "dude, sucks. Sorry to hear that." I would have too. After this vid, I'd laugh at your face if your dog got bludgeoned with a sledgehammer by someone who raped your mother. Or grandmother.
5) I'm glad that I will likely never see you at an actual event, as what shred of respect I had for you in your attempts to garner more attention for Legacy and magic, I just complete and utterly lost. I would just as soon rearrange your face with my knuckles as speak with you. Please die in a fire and take your fucking video blog to hell with you.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. How offensive is "This message is hidden because mercenarybdu is on your ignore list." anyway?
Regarding the video, I think the first couple seconds were awesome. The sterile, you-can-tell-I'm-not-an-adult-yet-because-my-walls-are-still-hospital-white decorating scheme of the room gave the viewer a cozy reminder of the easier days when parents still paid for cell phone bills and car insurance, and the protagonist's baby's-first-mustache made the audience think back to their own prepubescent years, when being the first twelve year-old to sport lip fur was pimp.
I give the first six seconds of this video... four out of five stars? It would have been a perfect submission if the lead roll was played by a native English speaker, or perhaps the lamp to house left.
Dude needs to wipe his lip, got some dirt on it.

BREAKING NEWS
Holy fucking shit.
Bryant Cook gets a PM about an hour ago from a lady who found this site from a Google Search of my roommate (Bret Weed). She gives him a number to call.
As it turns out, she found the backpack under her porch this morning (A WEEK LATER), and it had Bret's DCI card in it. She dug a little to find him in this thread: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13852
She lives less than a block from me. Less than a block from where they broke in and stole my cards. The backpack was full.
I got everything back. EVERYTHING. No iPod, but ALL THE CARDS.
I can't even describe how happy I am right now.
The PM:
Thru a google search I found the post that says "Bret Weed is coming" to some event about a Boston Roll call....I live in Syracuse and found a bag under my front porch with some merchandise in it, for playing wizard games...in one of the pockets I found a card with Bret Weed on it...the bag has broken glass in it, so I am assuming his car was broken into and this was taken...i would like to return it to him... my # is 315-XXX-XXXX...
Thank you
Amy

Good shit Nightmare!
Even your car isn't a safe place to keep your collection, especially with expensive stuff. I wouldn't want to keep a few thousand dollars lying around in my car, and it shouldn't be different for valuable cards. A former player at my store like 5 years ago had his car broken into during a FNM and had a random G/r deck he kept in there stolen from him. We never saw the deck or the cards ever again. Thankfully, it was a type 2 deck that was under $100, but still...

Just saw this thread. Great to see the highs and lows, and the happy ending.
As for mercenary, I think he's been watching too much Zeitgeist. Awful, awful, awful film.
Anyways, his point is spot on. Our currency is fiat money, where its value is derived from faith. Why he's trying to erode that faith is beyond me. He must have the most curious agenda, if he wants all his money to be useless.

Pure jealousy...as he obviously has no money. Having money would require having a job, can you imagine anyone hiring that? Dipshit lives in his parents baseme...web-studio... Hell, it can't even afford a razor (or a mirror, at which it would attempt to mug a wino for a dull, rusty razor, anything to extirpate that disturbing tumor between his ratlike nose & bumbling lips). I think it is funny that the bastard had to cut and edit his piece of shit video and still couldn't read the crappy ramblings he wrote up beforehand and had on his computer screen.
Adam, I am glad you got your stuff back. The whole situation sucked, but at least it ended on a positive note.

Sometimes "kids" take things too far; that's when they need to be punished!

It is rather sad to see someone who is so deluded into thinking that the world is one big conspiracy. I bet he thinks his posts are not his fault and is in no way responsible for what he thinks/says.
*sigh*
This thread is hilarious though...

...how long have you had Internet access?
...do you honestly believe this a new and / or unique phenomenon?
...
...do you think The Source would treat anyone else who commented on this matter with such a lack of literacy, decency, or intellect any differently?
On more serious matters - is this chick single and / or attractive?
I think it's amazing you got your cards back, Nightmare, and think - and I mean this affectionately - you're a phenominally lucky bastard.
I would suggest spending the next several months being very risk-averse. You've used up your luck, Sir; don't push it.
