I have a couple of these and was wondering if there is a shell to put them in, in todays metagame. Ive been out of the competitive field for a while and would like to know if there is anything established that is competitive or if any good recent list placed using Nether Voids. I was thinking of a black stompy build but is there anything else out there.

Black Stax? The fact that it costs 4 makes it that much worse than 3Sphere. 3Sphere you can easily drop turn 1 or 2. NV is going to almost always be turn 2 or 3.

Yes, I meant Black Stax... wow it's been a long time. Still somehow, I think it could be viable.

There's a version of Dutch Stax with a black splash (Clicky (http://www.deckcheck.net/deck.php?id=23647)) but that didn't even bother to run Nether Void. Probably because Trinisphere was enough to do the job. More importantly, it comes a turn sooner, which is very important for cards like this.

Unlike Trinisphere, Nether Void allows you to play uncounterable creatures at normal cost, yeah! I don't understand why one of the strongest black cards ever is not played more. Maybe is because Aether Vial. That's a good card you might want to run in your deck.

The shell I have been thinking about is some kind of 43 land deck. Can be quite nasty if you have wasteland/ghostquarter recursion. Terrible against vial though...

Rare to see these decklists because most people don't have Nether Void and the lists that do show up aren't amazing enough for most people to go out of their way to get Nether Voids.

For monoblack, I would start with something like this:
chalice of the void
trinisphere
ensnaring bridge/the abyss/koskun falls
nether void
smokestack
crucible of worlds

dark ritual
hypnotic specter
braids, cabal minion
street wraith
dark confidant

mox diamond/chrome mox
urborg, tomb of yawgmoth
tomb of urami/mishra's factory
city of traitors
ancient tomb
wasteland

Street wraith is rather weak. I only have it on this list because of the dual functionality and because with 3-sphere and stompy land the casting cost becomes less of an issue. It usually sits on a chrome mox next to dark ritual anyway. I know dark ritual is horrible with 3-sphere and chalice but it's simply WAY too good not to use it in this deck. It allows for some simply amazing 1st turn plays.

The real power of this deck, in my opinion, is the ability to run smokestack + braids for double the fun. Braids is actually quite devastating if it shows up early (thanks to dark ritual and the other mana accelerators) because braids requires the opponent to sacrifice something immediately rather than waiting to put a soot counter on the smokestack. You also get an excuse to use hypnotic specter. Dark Confidant's ability really shines when there's a braids or smokestack in play, too.

if i owned 3-4 Nether Voids, i would try these decks:
1) black void stax using 3Sphere+Void+Wastelands to lock opponent down and manlands or Tomb of Urami to kill him. plus Dark Rituals to make it faster and Mazes of Iths (paired with Urborg) for defense. such deck is even less stable than usual stax but can be really powerful if you are lucky enough.
2) something with Demigods of Revenge or mb some other uncounterable creatures.

I don't think Nether Void can go monoblack. It screams to be abused with Armageddon. If it has a place, it will be in a white/black deck.

White/Black aggro with Aether Vial, Dark Ritual, Nether Void, Wasteland, and a few Geddons might be cool. Although Sinkhole/Wasteland with vial is probably sufficient enough.

I played against a mono black nether void deck a little while ago that used manlands (factory and mutavault), Wasteland, Nether Void, Sinkhole, and Smallpox extremely effectively. Maybe Ritual and Mox Diamond as accel, and crucible of worlds would be there as well.

I've flitted with the card quite a bit. It really comes down to the fact that Trinisphere has a similar function, if slightly weaker, is generally one sided, and is easier to cast. Trying to Armageddon with it out requires 7 mana. And Trinisphere is rarely played as a full set due to how poor it is with multiples. If I was looking for my lock effects that wouldn't entirely bone me, Sphere of Resistance AND Thorn of Amethyst seem better, as at least a Stax deck can reasonably function then.

would shusher be the only viable way to push a armageddon through? also theres an enchantment for 1 and red called impending disaster which wipes all land on your upkeep if there are 7 or more lands in play. it might be more viable than armageddon.

Indeed, :6::w: for an Armageddon is not going to make a deck like this even tier 2! You might as well go all the way and play Obliterate at :6::r::r:! After all, it can't be countered. Obliterate, Nether Spirit, Nether Void!

I played a Nether Void deck at some weekly events a couple of months ago, with some decent success. After that brief bit of development, I ended up with this list:

//21
4x Thoughtseize
4x Hymn
3x Sinkhole
4x Swords to Plowshares
3x Nether Void
3x Pernicious Deed

//8
4x Tarmogoyf
4x Tombstalker

//3
3x Sensei's Divining Top

//28
4x Dark Ritual

4x Wasteland

4x Polluted Delta
4x Windswept Heath
4x Swamp
3x Bayou
2x Scrubland
1x Savannah
1x Forest
1x Plains

This is a fairly straightforward aggro-control deck, in the same vein as The Devil's Bile (Zherbus' old Type 1 Nether Void deck, and the reason I even own Voids). Compared to more typical Suicide decks, it trades some threats (and some aggression) for additional disruption and board control, and also gains the ability to utilize Sensei's Divining Top (something faster Suicide decks can't do). Top is fantastic here.

Now, I realize that there aren't many exciting synergies going on in this list. Things like Vexing Shusher and Demigod of Revenge are cute, but are too weak when Nether Void isn't in play (which is most of the time). I don't even think manlands are worth including, for this reason. Don't worry; Nether Void is plenty powerful enough without these cards around. Since all of black's best spells happen to cost one or two mana, a deck with 24 lands (and Tops) can easily ramp up to five and play under a Void. The symmetry is broken simply by your opponents usually playing fewer lands, and by you actively destroying some of them.

You can also occasionally blow someone out by Ritualing into an early Void, ideally with a Top or Goyf already in play.

If you want to play around with this list, the biggest weakness has got to be the low threat count. Some Nantuko Shades would fit perfectly, but I don't know what to cut. I would also suggest trying Vindicates in place of the Sinkholes, although the lower cc may make Sinkhole better. Finding room for the fourth Top would also be a good thing to try.

The problem with Nether Void is that it just costs too much to be really effective in the Legacy metagame. Even If you do manage to get it off in a timely manner there are too many things that potentially get around it to make it a sure lock. It's a wonderful card, like The Abyss, but it's also too clunky and slow for the metagame.

I abused the hell out of the card in the old single meta, but that was mainly because if you could land it on turn 1 you took a quarter of your opponent's mana away and really put a crimp in their development. That situation doesn't exist in this meta.

The other thing, of course, is that once you get into the realm of 4cc permanents and spells in general the bar gets set a lot higher in terms of judging effectiveness. You better have an absolute bomb there at any point that it is drawn after the first few turns and it better be largely unconditional.

since abrupt decay has come out ill trade the x4 swords for x4 abrupt decay removing plain lands to reduce even 1/2 total land for your fourth sensei.
i think u are totally right with the synergy matter.. nether void sinergy are always too slow to be usefull the best way to use it is just to build a contro aggro deck and splash nether in it. the deck should work even without nether void . Shusher seems good but not after all ill say. same for all other uncountarable stuff except for abrupt of course

Nether Void is the anti-combo sideboard card of choice for Rector Nic Fit.

I've wanted to break this card so many times but the problem is that it is almost a win more card. Reason being is because you typically have to be in a better board position than your opponent for it to be optimal.

Recent printings have allowed nether void to be played in a much more aggressive manor however the issue remains that you are playing black and you don't have man ways to get nether void into your hand if you don't draw it. If your deck is centered around having it and you don't get it then your just playing a weaker version of an aggro deck.

With that being said I think it's possible to make it work in an aggressive way. Cards that would work well ( not all necessarily in the same deck)

Caven of souls
Thrum the last troll
Great sable stag
Silk lash (2/2 bear with reach pro blue and can't be countered from dgm)
Deathrite shaman
Liliana of the veil
Dark ritual
Smallpox
Nether spirit
Bloodghast
Sinkhole
Abrupt decay
Sylvan library
Sensei's divining top

Mainly cards that can't be countered. Or if they are countered they come back from grave like bloodghast.
You will also have to run more lands than your opponent. Aim for 25.
