I looked myself up in DCI, and saw that I have 5 different ratings: Composite, Constructed, Eternal, Limited, and Total. I know what the 3 middle ones are, but can someone explain to me what goes into the Composite and Total ratings? Why is my Total rating the highest one? I can't figure out how that makes sense.

Also, if I were to go to the next Legacy Grand Prix (whenever that is), would I get a bye for having an Eternal rating over 1800?

I believe Total is calculated the same way that Constructed, Limited, and Eternal are calculated, but include all matches in limited, standard, extended, block, legacy, and vintage. I believe composite is an average of Limited and Constructed.

Composite is the mean of your Constructed and Limited ratings. Total is an overall rating that takes into account every match you have ever played regardless of format.

Yes. Or by having an 1850 Total rating, or (probably) by having an 1800 Constructed rating.

Okay, that's pretty much what I figured. I'm still not sure why my Total rating would be higher than all of the subset ratings, but whatever. Thanks!

Well, when I won pro-tour champion (some 2000+ constructed) in legacy, that gave me some nice boost in total. So its probably your case more or less.

Well, suppose you play at the 1850 level, but you start at 1600. If you then play 1 game of each format, of course if you count all 3 games, your rating would be higher. Actually, an even more general case holds. Suppose you play at rating level N, where N>1600. Then if you play X, Y, Z, etc. games of each format, then you ought to expect in the long run to have a higher total. (since you start at 1600, your expected rating will never quite reach 1850, assuming you play consistently at the 1850 level.)

Most people's Total ratings are higher than their other ratings, or at least were when the switch was made, and I'm not sure why. If I had to hazard a guess, it's because you've won more of your recent matches than when you were first beginning. You also took something like fifteen points off me a month ago in Total, but my Eternal rating is basically nonexistant :B

Total hasn't been introduced for that long. Most people, including me, would've guessed that it was the average of all my other ratings, yet it was higher. What they did was start everyone off at 1600 and then recalculated everything from the very start of their records. That tournament you played 10 years ago? Got calculated!

This also means that playing a Legacy match now against a player that's above you might lose you 4 points but if he's below you in Total because he is a very bad limited player will cause you to lose much more points there.

As for the points being higher in general. The more people, the higher the number is to reach the top %'s. If you hit 1720 in Belgium, you are top20. But if you hit 1720 in Standard... you're still bad.

"Wizards is introducing a new ELO rating called DCI Total that is the total of all the matches a player has participated in: Standard, Extended, Block Constructed, Vintage, Legacy, Sealed Deck, Booster Draft, 3-Person teams, and 2-Person teams. Unlike Composite rating, this is not an averaged rating. It is one rating for all your matches other than ones where you play with more than two players in a single game of Magic (multi-player and 2HG)."
