If I have previously cast an Epic Spell in a game, can I still play a card from a Hideaway land, assuming that I fulfill the requirements?

No you can't, because you are still "playing" the spell.

Playing a card is either playing a land or casting a spell.

If you hid a land, and it's your turn, and you haven't played a land yet this turn, you can play the hid land.

Thank you all, the confusion came because Epic said "cast" while Hideaway lands said "play", but now that I see that the wording is required because you can also play lands from them, it all makes sense.

I thought Hideaway dodged the "play only one land per turn" rule, in the same way that it lets you play sorceries and creatures at instant speed. Am I wrong?

The rules tell you when you can play sorceries, creatures, etc, so effects can also give you addtional times at which you can play those cards.

The rules tell you when you can't play lands, and this rule was made even more clear recently - so effects can't get around this.


305.3. (http://yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#R305.3.) A player can't play a land, for any reason, if it isn't his or her turn. Ignore any part of an effect that instructs a player to do so. Similarly, a player can't play a land, for any reason, if that player has used all of his or her land plays for that turn. Ignore any part of an effect that instructs a player to do so.

This seems to invalidate Exploration. Now i know the cards beat the rules, but the rules say ignore the cards...

Wizards...?

Exploration modifies how many lands you can play, not when.

Actually, it doesn't. The rule say "if that player has used all of his or her land plays for that turn." Exploration is explicitly worded to give you extra "land plays", so that rule still applies.

Two observations:

1) It's interesting that the rule quoted by cdr doesn't forbid you from playing lands at instant speed (during your turn).

2) Isn't it really ugly to have the Golden Rule ("card text > rules") explicitly contradicted in a single passage of the CompRules?

101.2. When a rule or effect says something can happen and another effect says it can't, the "can't" effect wins.

The second golden rule is the reason the Land restriction rule wins.

Whenever an opponent plays a land, you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield.

Putting a land onto the battlefield is completely seperate from playing a land.

Have we covered every single thing possible about playing lands yet? :)

So Djinn of Wishes, and similar cards, also don't work if you hit a land.

Sure they do, as long as you activate it on your turn and have not used up your land drop(s) for the turn.

The fact that there's no restriction in 305.3 on the timing of playing lands means you can play them during the resolution of spells and effects that let you play lands/cards, even if it is not your main phase.
