I got a play set of Strategic planning recently and can't think of any good decks they would work in in the legacy format. Does anyone have any suggestions of decks they work good in?

Old school style Thresh with 4 Mongoose, 4 Werebear, 2 Mystic Enforcer, and no Tarmogoyf.

Other than that, some sort of EDH deck.

We are not Vintage. We are not completely degenerate and are therefore allowed to play Brainstorms and Ponders as 4 of's. We won't play inefficient cards like Planning.
The format has spoken.

Madness.dec?

they're not discarded.

if it wasn't a sorcery, it might've been good.

Strategic Planning is only expensive because it's playable in Vintage only because it's the least crappy replacement for Brainstorm and Ponder. Eventually, WotC will Restrict it too and something else will replace it and become stupidly expensive.

Seriously though...Strategic Planning is a bad card.

and by that logic, capture of jingzhou is used as a replacement for time walk? I don't think so.

and besides, I haven't seen strategic planning played at all. o.o it might be used by lower budget players, but the fact it's a rare from P3 says a lot about it.

Or MOTL: $68! That's nucking futs for a card like that.

By the way, OP, how did you "get a play set"? I sure hope you didn't pay that kind of cash for a card like that.

Edit: I'd like to add that there is the (perhaps fractional) possibility of a reprint since this card is not on the reserve list (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=magic/products/reprintpolicy). I got rid of my Grim Tutor for this very reason.

It used to see play (and was rather damn good) in Iggy Pop, but that was long ago.

It's an Uncommon, not a rare.

As for Capture of Jingzhou being a replacement for Time Walk...that concept is immaterial since Time Walk has been Restricted since particularly forever. But it's harder for players who are used to recently using 4x Brainstorm and 4x Ponder to go down to 1x Brainstorm and 1x Ponder cold turkey. Strategic Planning was, at the time, a card with a similar effect and a similar CMC (but was significantly slower) to Brainstorm and Ponder, so it helped people keep their draw despite losing 3/4s of their Brainstorms and Ponders.

Some Welderbuilds run it. Getting artifacts in your grave is good in that.

Look up Zodiac Dragon. This isn't the most overpriced P3K card.

Everything in that set is overpriced, if imperial recruiter would have been printed in a normal set he wouldn't be €120+.

The month after planning was played at vintage champs it was going for well over $100 per card. At least it is down to 60-70 now for english ones and like 45 for chinese.

so basically use them in something like iggy, or welder. Gunna look into the iggy i guess. but it does look good for flash back type decks. Not many flash back coming to mind except for roar of the wurm. least i think thats the only good one.

On a side note, I recently purchased 4 Juzam Djinn. Does anyone have a match?

oops! my bad! well, I guess that makes sense, but I really haven't seen any being played recently. isn't AK better in non-welder decks?

I don't think he bought them. Unless I am reading sarcasm into words that don't actually have them. Why would anyone buy expensive cards simply because they are expensive, and then not have a deck for them?

Sit on them until Brainstorm gets banned. Or sell them, even better.

The unbanning of Entomb has made Reanimtor decent. This is awesome in that deck

Alternatively, this card would be sexy in a U/R Welder deck, serving as draw manipulation and a way to get bombs in the yard.

The best strategy for planing, IMO, especially if you've got a lot of boards to go through, is to run each board through the planer before moving on to the next adjustment.

You'll have to start with the thickest first, and get them all to approximately the same thickness. Then feed them one immediately after the other. This will help reduce snipe (which may or may not be a problem for your planer). Also, flip each board after each path so you take material off both sides equally.
