Some friends were playing a casual game before our draft started tonight and a wierd situation cropped up none of us were 100% sure on so I figured I'd ask here..

Player 1 has a Retaliator Griffin out and Player 2 is attacking with a shadow creature equipped with Sword of Fire and Ice. The issue was once the damage happened to the player, both the triggered abilities would go on the stack and since Player 2 was attacking, we thought he could order them (to kill the Gryphon with the SoFI before the counters were placed). We all agreed that "made sense" but we weren't positive.

I remember something like this happening with creatures that do damage for each creature going to the gy or something similar. The controller of the creature got to order the triggers to get the most out of it because he controlled the creature. In this instance though, who would get to order it since the two cards are controlled by different players?

I'm pretty sure what happens is his SOFI trigger goes on the stack (because he's active) and then the griffin trigger (inactive player.) and then resolve in reverse order as usual.

Triggered abilities controlled by the active player go on the stack first, then triggered abilities controlled by the inactive player, then they resolve last-in first-out. So the griffin will survive.

603.3b If multiple abilities have triggered since the last time a player received priority, each player, in APNAP order, puts triggered abilities he or she controls on the stack in any order he or she chooses. (See rule 101.4.) Then the game once again checks for and resolve state-based actions until none are performed, then abilities that triggered during this process go on the stack. This process repeats until no new state-based actions are performed and no abilities trigger. Then the appropriate player gets priority.

101.4. If multiple players would make choices and/or take actions at the same time, the active player (the player whose turn it is) makes any choices required, then the next player in turn order (usually the player seated to the active player’s left) makes any choices required, followed by the remaining nonactive players in turn order. Then the actions happen simultaneously. This rule is often referred to as the “Active Player, Nonactive Player (APNAP) order” rule.
Example: A card reads “Each player sacrifices a creature.” First, the active player chooses a creature he or she controls. Then each of the nonactive players chooses a creature he or she controls. Then all creatures are sacrificed simultaneously.
