I don't know how many of you guys have given even a second glance to the Planechase decks that WotC has recently put out, but my roommates, fellow EDH players, and I have played with them a ton, and all I can say is:

WOW. Wizard's hit the nail on the head with this one. It's crazy amounts of fun to play with these cards, and it's become an integral part of our casual gaming already. I don't know how long its going to be before we start putting together decks specifically for Planechase, but we're excited about incorporating them into EDH, and we're even playing the actual decks they come with - which are a blast to play, which stands in stark opposition to all the "boxed set" decks they've released lately.

If you haven't played with these yet, give it a shot. It's bonkers fun.

We did two things - first, we proxied all the plane cards, so we could see if it sucked. We used a normal D6 (1 is planeswalk, 6 is chaos). Second, we pooled some store credit, some trade-ins, and some cash, and bought the whole set. It's totally worth it.

It helps that we have three Magic players living in the same house. We can pool resources a little easier.

I'm not a bot, this set is actually awesome.

The preconstructed decks not being utter trash also helps a lot.

I have to admit that I do not know all the details about Planechase, but this past Saturday, my group made up our own based on the ones we had seen. We used our own decks. We played it 2-headed giant style, and it was pretty damned fun. On that note, I recommend this one:

God, I hate you, Kenny

Gain 20 life, put the top 20 cards from your library into your graveyard, draw a card: switch places with target opponent, untap all lands you control. Play this ability only once per turn.

on a 6: Target player has shroud until the end of your next turn. Put any number of cards from your graveyard on the bottom of your library.

I don't think we're ready to make our own planes. I was thinking about designing decks for 10 individual planes but it would mean that's another deckbox I have to carry around, I'm up to like 8 right now.

This set is really fun and it works so well with EDH. You can tell that WOTC is in love with EDH and you know they wish they had invented it because they're obviously trying to make it there own now. For a group of competitive tourney players we've all become such casual junkies.

I played my skittles deck against a standard deck with the planes the other day and it was pretty fun. It evens the playing field of formats quite a bit due to its randomness.

After Divine Vs. Demonic (which I only bought for the Akroma and Tutor) I wasn't sure if Wizard knew how to do anything right with this type of thing, but they definitely did this right.

We had an epic bout of 'break out the casual decks and work the planar dice' last friday.

We all cursed Rabia. A lot. We were stuck there for over 20 rounds. WITH A LOT OF DICE ROLLING. Hilarity ensued.
And the next game, I beat someone to death with a factory due to walking before combat to the 'no blocking' promo-plane. Good times. Good times.

I wish I had people around to play with, this does sound like a lot of fun. it'll probably be even better with custom-made decks, but it's complicated when you need at least 10 planes in your plane pile.

How do you 'Custom Build' decks for Planechase? I mean, from what I gather, there's a pile of Planes, and everyone plays with the same pile (like Chaos Magic or something). If you build your deck to abuse your ten plane pile, won't everyone else catch on and not want to play that way? Or won't they build a deck that works and choose ten planes that compliment it, and then want to play with that pile of Planes?

Yeah the store I help out in sold out of three sets of planechase in one day luckily one set got donated to the store. We had a 6 person game going and the first plane to flip was mill the top 10 cards during your upkeep and we killed the 2nd player off by chaosing him to death and himself milling 20, Good times. Also I think the black deck is the absolute nuts.

i notice that magic players don't read inserts... The Planechase rules say that after playing with the precons, you should build your own pile of ten planes, and a your own deck to go with it.

In any event; I love Planechase too. I'm the only one in my group who has any of the old Vanguard cards(most guys I play with hadn't even heard of them), but I'd like to get some of us to build decks around a Vanguard and Pkanechase.

Personally, I like the idea of using all 41 planes in one big deck, and everyone sharing it, that way we get more variety out of it, and more chaos.

I need to get those sleeves for them, cuz I think theyre going to see a lot of play.

That's what we do, we don't bother with individual plane decks. Why would we be fighting each other from different planes, anyway?

Well, you wouldn't be. Starting player flips up the first plane. Active player is always controller of the plane (owner remains owner, obv). Whenever someone planeswalks, active plane goes to the bottom of it's owner's planar deck and the dude who rolled pw flips up his top plane.

IMO building a deck to go with a custom set of planes is like pouring €500 into an EDH deck: just not right. We ended up throwing all of our planes together into a big pile and just playing casualdecks with them, profiting from some planes and hating some other planes (DAMN YOU LETHE LAKE).

Honestly, take it for what it is, a casual concept, and don't try to be 'good' at it since that's not what it's about.

JeroenC
09-15-2009, 01:05 PM
You can't be good at something this random, I think. But I don't think something is wrong with making another deck with the right planes to play the way you want. It's still going to be fun.
And 500 into an EDH isn't all that hard if you want a decent manabase, for example. Price doesn't make a difference, the kind of deck does. Hokori.dec is no fun but I don't think it has to be expensive. EDH is a fun format, if you make an expensive deck, it's up to you.

Totally agree, we play it, we love it.

It randomizes a lot, so the noob.deck also has a chance. Its so cracy whene they roll chaos like elric from melbon and put 5/5 dragons into play...
You waste all your mana for it, then you just change the plane and only make things worse for you  .

they'd never put casual cards in a competitive set. But if they did, I'd be all over it.

That'd be interesting, wouldn't it? A casual set, thats not an "Un" set? Have a set of cards specifically designed for casual, or less played formats. Like one set that has cards for Planechase(like "Activate the chaos ability on current Plane) or cards for EDH(Exile target General) or something for 2HG(Target team chooses a player on their team, that player skips his/her next untap and/or draw step)

Competitive is good, but casual is fun.

They could make another set of planechase decks next year and put in some cards that aren't actually in the regular game. They wouldn't be legal for tournament play, but legal for planechase. Maybe have a text line like the old Ante cards that says "Remove this card from your deck if you are not playing with Planechase" to avoid some confusion.

First time poster, short time reader.

So we had 2 three man EDH pods last night with Planechase. Both pods used the same plane, and whenever one pod rolled to another plane, it had split second on the other pod.

Eric (Sharum), Gallo (UWB Meriki?) and I (Wort, Boggart Auntie) were in one pod, and Josh (UW Angel?), John (Sapling of Colfenor), and Jon (Evil Crovax) were in another.

I'm up first on the roll, and we're on the Chaos Roll: Take An Extra Turn plane. I proceed to take four extra turns and recur my Mogg War Mashall with my General, Wort, Boggart Auntie. On my second to last turn the other pod planes into Coat of Armor and I swing for some stupid amount on Gallo. Untap, do it again, put Gallo at 8, and pass the turn. The turn comes back around and I swing on Gallo with Boggart for the kill, and five or six tokens at Eric. Mid swing they planechase into something else, Gallo lives at 4, and Eric is at low thirties.

I Tarfire Gallo, Sac Mogg Fanatic, and flashback Dread Return on the Fanatic to finish him off, shooting my wad in the process, and go head to head with Eric. I have in hand, Tarfire, and in the yard a Hammer of Bogarden.

Eric untaps, we dance a few turns, and he vomits his hand on the table when he cranks out Cloud Key, Etherium Sculptor, and a Sculpting Steel on Etherium Sculptor. Eric ends the turn with Winter Orb on the table, a few blockers, and I'm tapped out.

I untap a Vivid Crag, play a land, and they planeswalk into the "If a creature deals combat damage to an opponent the controller may draw a card" plane. I swing for 8 with 8 guys, and he takes it. I draw five lands and three threats, roll the planechase and hit the plane letting me play as many lands as I want each turn. I empty my hand on the table and realize I have Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician, more than two Mountains, and Crucible of Worlds. I make 2 billion Goblins, infinite Red mana, and have no Banefire while I'm at close to forty life.

In hand I have Lightning Bolt and Tarfire. Not enough to finish him off. Pass the turn, and don't take mana burn. *Dances a jig*

Eric untaps, combos off a bit with his Vedelken 0/2 card drawing engine, hits the Magister Sphynx to put me at ten, has the Lightning Greaves, but doesn't hit the Cranial Plating and can't finish me off. Two billion and six goblins rush and devour him like ugly zombies.

Now for the kinky part!

When Jon, John, and Josh's pod gets to one person, that winner and I face off. In the meantime, every time my turn would come up, I gain two life because I'm "recuperating." It's a rule we agreed on at the start and I love it.

Six rotations go by and I go from 10 to 22 before John and Josh scoop to Jon because, "[he's] got this and has the best chance of winning."

They pass the turn to me, and we're on the Polymorph plane. Without waiting for priority, Jon Slaughterpacts my Goblin King, but I had tutored with Liliana on my last turn to get a Goblin Chieftan and put it on top. So with Slaughterpact on the stack, I do the Polymorph plane ability, sacrificing a token (now two billion and seven), and hit, viola! My Chieftan! Save my guys from Jon's evil Crovax, and send my horde of zombie goblins his way to feed.

yeah, but Blood Tyrant can exist in non-multiplayer games. If they made a card that made the players "Planeswalk", it wouldn't work anywhere but in a planechase game. The only way i can think of them making something like that into a legit card, would be to make a card that reads something like: "The next time you would roll a die, you choose the outcome of the roll" That would allow people to choose "Planeswalk Symbol" or "Chaos Symbol"...but it could potentially break other cards(mostly Un-cards, which don't affect competitive play anyway)

idk, I sometimes wish Wizards would make middle-ground cards. There are competitive cards(those used in sanctioned events) and there are what MaRo calls "casual" cards(the UNsets)....I'd like to have cards designed for Planechase or EDH, and not have to worry about a Cheaty Face.

Right, but it also just doesn't affect anything because the game would be over at that point. Putting something that mentions "planeswalking" or "chaos die" would just be non-sensical. It's not the same.

Infinite mana = win in almost every instance anyway. I fail to see how it's now more broken because you can planeswalk a bunch, and if you roll wrong, you can do stupid accidental stuff like discarding your hand, or Incremental Blighting your team, or other stuff.

I time walked 4 times in a row this weekend on Otaria. In another game, I had Izzet Steam Maze up, and went turn 3 Kodama's Reach, turn 4 Hunting Wilds. Pretty bonkers.

Yea...if you're not winning with infinite mana anyway, there's a problem. Unless you're just generating infinite mana to pass the turn and not take mana burn. That's kinda cool I guess.
