Sheesh, everyone knows that it's THREE uncommons for one rare! Just open any pack, you'll see!
I fucking hate people who try to rip me (or others) off. Beyond just general idiocy and sociopathy, I feel like I'm being insulted: do I really look that stupid?
This kind of shit is why I always, always, always tell everyone to verify prices with the store's net connection before trading.

while I agree that these kind of people are annoying, the OP clearly overreacted to these things. maybe he just cut some details, maybe he really is elitist or something like that.
anyway, it was still funny, specially the one about counter-top. I've had so many people say those kind of things, omg. "you know that doesn't work, right?". like stifling storm triggers, that one is a hard one for noobs. (just leaving and saying they're idiots doesn't help though. if they don't even listen to your thorough explanation and act stupid, then you've got a point)

We jumped him because he was actively trying to rip people off. He tells me he values my rares at two uncommons, but he values his shitty rares at $8 when a kid with less experience wants it, and then tries to keep someone from looking up the actual price. The fact that he knows nothing about the rules of magic is just gravy.
But then, I don't know why I'm answering to IBA for calling me - or anyone really - a douche. Bit of pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?
Rather than explain calmly he states that he simply called the kid a fucking idiot.
I argue with him for a little while that X is only equal to zero when the spell is not on the stack, but he holds firm. So then I ask him, "If X is always zero, how does it ever counter anything, ever?" He doesn't have an answer, but still insists that he's right
Skipped that part, did you?
Also, jumping kid and telling him to not come back, super jerk.
Who said he was a kid? I'm pretty sure the guy is older than I am, and I'm 24.
The guy wasn't ripping anyone off. He clearly didn't know anything about Magic. Nothing he did was out of malice. If the guy claims to have checked ebay prices that morning then obviously it's not just his ignorance.

That's not ripping people off. That's new players clutching their Timmy cards. There's also plenty of room for confusion in the fact that the other Akroma actually is bought and soldfor the $8-10 range.
Regardless, crappy knowledge of card prices doesn't justify being a douchebag.
The fact that he knows nothing about the rules of magic is just gravy.
It's not "gravy", it's someone who obviously is either new to the game or never got past the kitchen table level. The correct response to this isn't wigging out, spitting all over yourself and putting on a tough guy pose and generally being a jackass.
But then, I don't know why I'm answering to IBA for calling me - or anyone really - a douche. Bit of pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?
When I respond to someone's errors of ignorance by flipping out and threatening to beat them up (with my friends' help, of course, and they're obviously all upstanding citizens as well), let me know, because then you'll be going somewhere with this.
I mean, it'll still be a logical fallacy, but I'm taking that as a given.

Fact of the matter is that you weren't fucking there, Jack. The guy is in his late 20's, has foiled-out Tier 1 decks, vastly changes the way he values his cards depending on how much he thinks he can get out of the deal, and even flat-out lies about the prices of the cards he's overvaluing. He's no noob, even if he is stupid.

You cornered him in a dark alley off to the side somewhere and told him to never come back. How in the fuck do you not call that a strong arm tactic???
..and for the record, attacking IBA for his personality or history is in no way helping the argument. Debate the issues or stop being a pansy and man up that what you did was a display of one of the lowest rungs of human behavior.

True. All I have to go on is your description of events. If you feel you're being misrepresented, then, you know exactly whom to blame.
The guy is in his late 20's, has foiled-out Tier 1 decks, vastly changes the way he values his cards depending on how much he thinks he can get out of the deal, and even flat-out lies about the prices of the cards he's overvaluing. He's no noob, even if he is stupid.
Age is irrelevant. The price of Akroma is, as mentioned, an understandable confusion; first because new players overvalue big, shiny monsters with big, shiny boobs, and second because there's another "Akroma, Angel of Synonymous Word" out there that costs what he was describing. So no justification for assuming foul play there.
The only information you've provided that indicates the above is the foiled out T1 deck. That's new information, but as you mentioned, he's in his late twenties. He probably has a job and can afford to buy a shiny expensive deck off ebay for his new hobby. This is like saying that everyone with a new set expensive golf clubs or custom pool cue is a pro. Sometimes people just buy high level, tricked out chars for WoW or Everquest that don't know how to play the game. Given that he was insistent that this "new" Counterbalance-Top combo didn't work, during trading when there was no advantage for him to do so, I'm not leaning towards bad faith.

Yeah, I'm not buying that. If the guy was just ignorant of card prices, you would expect him to propose trades that were to his detriment about as often as those to his advantage. Instead, every single trade he wanted to do was grossly in his favor.
The idea that he was just innocently trying to trade his uncommons for Baneslayers stretches credibility beyond the breaking point, Jack's sudden big-hearted-ness notwithstanding.

About the baneslayer... no one anywhere is going to agree to a trade of #Uncommons for 1 Rare, and no little kid is going to believe that. If he was trying to rip people off he could easily come up with a better scam than that, and I'm assuming he's just retarded.
Which believe it or not does not mean he needs to get jumped in the parking lot.

Yeeeeeah. Maybe you're from happy care bear land where everyone trades for honor and communal spirit, but back in reality even new players are trading to make a profit. Valuing what you have more than what the other person has in a trade is a completely normal human reaction.
Proposing trades that are in your favor isn't actually a crime. I can't believe I'm having to explain this shit to purportedly grown-ass adults.
The idea that he was just innocently trying to trade his uncommons for Baneslayers stretches credibility beyond the breaking point, Jack's sudden big-hearted-ness notwithstanding.
Ignoring your attempted ad hominems and the fact that proposing trades in your favor isn't actually in any way immoral, everything this player did and said indicated that he knew nothing about this game. That was, in fact, Majikal's complaint; that he was a noob. To simultaneously complain of his noobdom while insisting he knew what he was doing is to demonstrate a truly impressive level of double think.

Just because he's a noob as far as the rules of the game go doesn't mean that he doesn't know the value of the cards or how to rip people off (or at least try).
And I'm not buying that he knew what he was doing. If I remember correctly he was screwing himself in a deal by arguing that counterbalance was a terrible card, while wanting to trade it.
No, they were my Counterbalances. He commented on them whilst thumbing through my box of uncommons. The only way this screwed the deal was by exacerbating the general asshattery of his card-valuing system. Undervalue my cards + spout bullshit = I don't want to trade with you anymore.

So, is anyone commenting in this thread witness to the event or are we all going based off the story that majikal deleted?
not really. I didn't read about baneslayers anywhere, it was about an akroma.
of course, majikal says people will just come here and be able to piece together the story, but if he didn't delete the story, there wouldn't be a need for people to comment on incomplete information. if he was so sure that he did the right thing, he would've kept his story up. but I guess he's only a man when he can jump us on the parking lot with his friends and threaten to kick our asses.
I agree with IBA, if this guy didn't know much about magic, he wouldn't know the real value of cards, for his benefit or not. I know when I was a noob I made some pretty good deals without realizing it.
and you know, if he didn't know how counterbalance worked, instead of just telling him not to lek stupidity all over your cards or however you put it, you could've just asked him "why?" and then corrected him with actual rules knowledge. you could easily pwn him right there and actually increase his knowledge of the game rather than being an arrogant prick.
btw, his 2 uncommons for a rare thing is ridiculous, but I know I had a similar concept. like some uncommons that I wanted for one rare I didn't care for. I eventually realized this wasn't a good system, but I stopped trading by then, so meh.

may seem I'm riding IBA's synonym for a penis, but in truth, I just don't agree with his ways and attempt to get credit for it.
Let's all agree on the fact that the other guy was/is a douche. It just doesn't justify ganging up on and intimidating him.

There were a couple guys like the one mentioned in the op that used to come down to our local shop. They would brag that they knew the rules better than everyone else and one even said he was a level 3 Judge. I came to suspect other wise when one of them tried to reanimate a Demigod of Revenge and use its ability to bring other demigods into play and the "judge" said it worked, I KNEW he was full of shit when he said painters servant doesn't work. You know what, after these two came in last place a couple of times they just stopped coming, no "jumping" required.
That being said I think you did the right thing asking\telling him not to come back. If you don't take a stand against this kind of behavior then you are encouraging it.

Which believe it or not does not mean he needs to get jumped in the parking lot.
Well, that much we can agree on. That was definitely over the line.
That being said I think you did the right thing asking\telling him not to come back. If you don't take a stand against this kind of behavior then you are encouraging it.
Yes and no. He should have done it in the store, where the prospect of gaining a reputation as a bad trader could have scared the guy straight, and even if it didn't, would still protect the people in the store from trading ignorantly with him. It doesn't really matter whether it's "dishonest" or "foolhardy," no one wants that rap. Threats of violence and intimidation were definitely not the way to go.
Yeeeeeah. Maybe you're from happy care bear land where everyone trades for honor and communal spirit, but back in reality even new players are trading to make a profit.
If you don't understand the difference between "profit" and "rip off" then I can't help you, and can't imagine any charitable explanation as to why you feel you're qualified to comment on this. But I expect you _do_ understand, and are just being argumentative. Oh well, you know what they say...takes all kinds!
To simultaneously complain of his noobdom while insisting he knew what he was doing is to demonstrate a truly impressive level of double think.
Are you actually some sort of advanced spambot, that has never encountered people who know their card values to a tee, but can't play for shit? Inquiring minds want to know!
As you yourself put it in this very thread,
This is like saying that everyone with a new set expensive golf clubs or custom pool cue is a pro. Sometimes people just buy high level, tricked out chars for WoW or Everquest that don't know how to play the game.
But please, let's have the guy who is now arguing in direct contradiction with his earlier position tell us more about 'doublethink'. Experience is the best teacher!
not really. I didn't read about baneslayers anywhere, it was about an akroma.
Then you missed the whole first half of the story. Majikal wrote that his first interaction with the guy consisted of Majikal wanting his Rack and Ruin and Arcane Denial, and the guy proposing to take Majikal's Baneslayers and/or Elspeths as a trade, since he "values 2 uncommons for 1 rare."

I propose to set up a parlamentary (spelt correctly?) committee in order to further investigate this incident. It is without doubt of the highest possible importance for the public, and needs to be examined more thoroughly to get all the facts.

Arguing that Akroma, Angel of Fury is worth $8 isn't ripping someone off. Firstly because to some people, it might be worth the eight dollars. Value is in the eye of the purchaser; this is actually what makes positive-sum economics possible to begin with. Value isn't fixed.
That being said, the difference between profit and ripping someone off is semantical. And that's all it is. Everyone is the ultimate arbiter of what they think their cards are worth and what they're willing to trade for them. Everyone's trading for more than what they start with.
Are you actually some sort of advanced spambot, that has never encountered people who know their card values to a tee, but can't play for shit? Inquiring minds want to know!
I've encountered people that knew card values and didn't play well.
What I've never encountered are people that knew card values but didn't know card interactions.
As you yourself put it in this very thread,
But please, let's have the guy who is now arguing in direct contradiction with his earlier position tell us more about 'doublethink'. Experience is the best teacher!
I know that you honestly try, and you're doing your best with what nature gave you, so I'll break this down to bite-size chunks;
What I said earlier: Some people that have expensive equipment are not experience players.
What I said more recently: (Almost) All people that don't know card interactions don't know card prices.
There's no contradiction. In so far as inexperienced players are players that don't know card interactions, the statements support each other.
I'm not sure if I can simplify this any further. Let me know if you're still struggling.

While reading these last few posts, I thought that this thread might have some interesting ideas, thoughts, or maybe even -gasp- a real purpose. Sooo... I went back to the first page to read it from the beginning.
Mistake.
Locked.
