View Full Version : A tabernacle accident

I had an issue on the MWS regarding a thing which may seem obvious (and I thought it was), but now that I'm thinking about it I'm not certain of the answer. The thing is pretty simple: with 2x Magus of the Tabernacle on the field, how much has my opponent to pay to let his creature(s) survive? :2:? Or :1:?
*seize the day*
To avoid opening another thread, I saw @ a local shop a guy (who shared a strange resemblance with Wolverine). This is pretty obvious, you say. The fact is, this X-man had a small sheet, and on that small sheet there were written things such "Landstill, +3 Needle, +1 *card*, -1 *card*". My question is: is it legal to have a piece of paper to help siding in & out? Basically it is useless, as I know my deck and know exactly what to take out and in, but I was wondering if this could be an acceptable thing or if there was some kind of penalty. Please, enlighten me.

2 tabernacle= pay two for each creature
As far as I know about the note sheet it used to not be allowed but they let you with the M10 update.
Magus of the Tabernacle 3W
Creature -- Human Wizard
All creatures have "At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice this creature unless you pay 1."
2/6
Each Magus adds an additional ability to creatures (essentially another line of text), so creatures have two ""At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice this creature unless you pay 1.", each of which will trigger.

You can refer to outside notes between games of a match, but during games you can only look at notes you made within the match.
MTR 2.9 Taking Notes
Players are allowed to take written notes during a match and may refer to those notes while that match is in progress. At the beginning of a match, each player’s note sheet must be empty and must remain visible throughout the match. Players do not have to explain or reveal notes to other players. Judges may ask to see a player’s notes and/or request that the player explain his or her notes. Players may not refer to outside notes during games. This includes notes from previous matches.
Between games, players may refer to a brief set of notes made before the match. They are not required to reveal these notes to their opponents. These notes must be removed from the play area before the beginning of the next game. Excessive quantities of notes – more than a sheet or two - are not allowed and may be penalized as slow play.

Thanks for your answers. That guy was quite polite, but when I landed my second Magus he said "It's like <all creatures get flying>. They don't fly twice". Then I said the same exact thing as you did, the lines of text are two, and each one affects the state separately. I've persuaded my opponent, but at the end of the game my doubts started to devour me. I don't like to win by tricking the rules, it was just to continue sleeping with no regret. So, thank you again, for both your answers.
If you give a creature flying twice, it has two instances of flying, but that doesn't do much. Tabernacle twice does something.

You can refer to outside notes between games of a match, but during games you can only look at notes you made within the match.
So you can look at a sideboarding "manual" for your deck between games 1/2 during a match, and between games 2/3. But during the games you cannot.

Tabernacle stacks.
Certain abilities, like Haste and Flying, don't do anything when you stack them. Your creature can't most faster with Greaves of Lightning if it already has haste.
However, cost effects do tend to stack. Propaganda stacks with others for example.

That is correct.

With M10 effects like lifelink and Sliver abilities the CiP disenchant effect do not stack what is the exact ruling that says somethings stack somethings do not?
If the Sliver ability would not happen two times or having double lifelink does not both trigger why would the it give two of the exact same line to a card.

"702.13a Lifelink is a static ability. Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that source’s controller, or its owner if it has no controller, to gain that much life (in addition to any other results that damage causes). See rule 118.3."
Lifelink isn't a triggered ability, it's a static ability. It works like flying where multiple instances can exist but are simply redundant. The wording of lifelink suggests that it would never stack. Also, the rules specifically say that it doesn't stack.

There's no such thing as a "ruling that says what stacks". It's obvious whether a second instance of an ability does something based on what that ability is.
Is the ability static (like new lifelink or flying)? Probably doesn't do anything.
Is the ability triggered (like old 'lifelink', disenchant sliver, or tabernacle upkeep)? Probably does something.
If the Sliver ability would not happen two times or having double lifelink does not both trigger why would the it give two of the exact same line to a card.
Why would what give two of the exact same line to a card? You, the player, are giving something the exact same line to something twice. You're allowed to do that, even if it has no real effect.
