View Full Version : Making a new deck to play... what to choose?

I thought I'd post here to get some ideas and insight from the community. Lately, I've really wanted to go and make another Legacy deck that I could play around with. I have had a pet deck, a UWb Landstill, and recently I've made Ichorid as the second deck to go along with it, just to change things up.
I've had terrible luck with Ichorid and overall just bad piloting, so I've decided that the deck isn't for me. I want to slowly build another competitive deck by trading off this Ichorid deck, but I have no clue what to make.
Anyone care to throw me a deck idea? Really, I'm looking for something that I can get the majority of trading my Ichorid parts (I have an LED/Unmask build with a large variety of SB cards). Armageddon Stax so far has looked like a great idea. What other decks are cheap enough that I can get a good head start? For budget constraints, I can probably invest an addition $100 in addition to the deck.
Thanks for any suggestions,

If you can manage the Goyfs and Chain Lightnings (and Goyf is a staple anyway), Goyf Sligh is a pretty fun deck to build, and easy to pilot. As a control (Landstill primarily) player myself, having a balls-to-the-wall aggro deck is a fun contrast that's still competitive. The only problem is that the best version is 3c Naya Sligh, which can get a little pricey on the manabase. R/g is still viable though, which makes the manabase less expensive.
I guess it depends; what all cards do you have besides the cards for Landstill and Ichorid? Alot of the cards from UWb Landstill are applicable to other decks; for example, building Threshold out of the FoW's, fetches, duals and such from Landstill is much less of a stretch than building a deck that uses none of those cards.

Armageddon Stax is a good choice. And you can easily trasform it into Dragon Stompy of Fairie Stompy (playing Cloud Spirit and Rishdian Port instead of Sea Drake) or Deep Blue and it'll only cost you $20-30 to do so.
If you're looking for other cheap viable decks.
Play Burn, Goblins or Elves. But they get boring quickly.
If you want something fun and cheap, look into suicide black, merfolk or pox.
If budget isn't a concern, any decks in the Decks to Beat Forum would serve you well.

If you want something fun and quirky but still really powerful, try Jak's Bant Survival deck. I've been having a blast testing that thing for the last few days.

I'm not all up on playing with Goyfs, mainly because:
a) it's a little over the top of what I would pay
b) the thought of having to get Trops (with a Blue shell) // Naya Manabase with the appropriate fetches makes me sick :tongue:
I wasn't planning on killing Landstill, but I do have "shells" that I can switch back and forth so I understand what you're saying. I didn't mention this earlier, but I think I'm leaning towards a non-Blue shell at the moment, unless the mana base is all Islands :D. Besides LS/Ichorid, my collection becomes pretty thin. I do have a set of Bobs though, but I'm afraid of what the manabase is going to cost to have him added in.

Budget is a concern at this point :)
I'm not a huge fan of Burn, Goblins, etc, for the exact reason you stated. I think I'll look at Faerie/Dragon Stompy a little more in depth, that seems okay to me. One of the reasons I like Stax is because the mana base is way cheaper than what it would cost to build a traditional Fetch/Dual base. Plus, I really like Ancient Tomb & City of Traitors as cards to begin with.
I actually *have* the Merfolk to run it at the moment, just no Mutavault/Jitte/Vial. So I'm actually close in that department.
If you want something fun and quirky but still really powerful, try Jak's Bant Survival deck. I've been having a blast testing that thing for the last few days.
I'll take a look. Little MWS'ing couldn't hurt at the moment.

Why gets goblins boring quickly and not Suicide Black, for example?
Mono red goblins is a great option: it's competitive, it's cheap (you should be able to trade for the hole deck or almost) and, trust me, it's fun to play.

Looking into this first option, and thus have narrowed it down to GW Armageddon Stax /// Goblins. This can be closed, to any moderator in passing.
In other news, I have a fully viable Ichorid deck for grabs :wink:

Death and Taxes is still a good deck.
It's cheap, has tons of options, skillintensive, very interesting to play and most people think it is dead with M10 rules, so you can make them "what the fuck, how does THAT killes me!!?" quite often.

I'd suggest Solidarity. It is very fun, skill-rewarding and somewhat competitive. Also, pretty cheap these days - only Resets cost some more and aren't usable in other decks :) .
Also, it almost fits here:

LED and Ichorid Lands?
Time to play a good combo deck, dude. Shit' em out with TES.

Astral Slide dude. Play Slide. Best deck in the format. Here's a linky to the thread on it:the best deck in legacy thread. (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10626)

Aggro Loam is fairly cheap to build, and you can skimp on the Tarmogoyfs if you want to do so. It's got solid matchups against most of the top tier and really only folds to combo.
EDIT: Stax is pretty bad. You can build Aggro Loam with Ravnica duals and the new fetches if you're looking to use lands that are easier to find than the original duals and Onslaught fetches (although, honestly, Wooded Foothills is the only one you need, and it's not that expensive. You can draft the Zendikar ones, though..).

I have just finished building my Zoo deck and its time for new "project". What I am looking is a legacy deck that is non-blue. I have been considering building a black deck but I am open to all suggestions. Budget is not a problem. If you have any good/interesting/fun suggestions for relatively new MtG player please post them. And any links to explanations on how the deck works would also be great. It doesn't have to be tier1, I just want another deck so I don't alway have to play with Zoo :)

They're actually in the Established Decks Forum.
I agree that Stompy may be a good choice because you can very easily build the variants (Dragon, Angel, Faerie, etc.). All three are fun to play.

Play Staxx/Stompy. It's a tier 1.5 Archetype that beats tier 1 decks. It's great for metagaming purposes and the playstyle is entirely different. No duals/fetches needed, and you get the staples for the Stax/stompy shell.
I started off Legacy with the Stax/Stompy decks and moved onto fetches/duals/goyfs when I had the cards.

So... I thought I was set, but I guess most of the decks we mentioned here in this thread are available to the rest of my team (someone just made GW Stax the other day, and we have BR Goblins). No need to necro, we are still discussing!
I really like the TES idea that someone mentioned earlier (read Bryant's TES thread). Minus the Chants, this could be a cheap options (but I'd have to keep the LED's, which leaves me with a lot less money... :tongue: ).
I did see this, though... http://www.deckcheck.net/deck.php?id=28851
// Deck file for Magic Workstation (http://www.magicworkstation.com)
// Lands
4 [ON] Polluted Delta
12 [CST] Swamp (1)
4 [TE] Wasteland
// Creatures
4 [10E] Hypnotic Specter
3 [CFX] Nyxathid
2 [SHM] Oona, Queen of the Fae
4 [SHM] Painter's Servant
1 [EX] Plaguebearer
// Spells
4 [CST] Dark Ritual
3 [FNM] Smother
2 [OD] Tainted Pact
4 [SHM] Beseech the Queen
1 [SC] Decree of Pain
3 [DDC] Duress
4 [FE] Hymn to Tourach (1)
3 [4E] Deathgrip
2 [TE] Grindstone
// Sideboard
SB: 1 [SC] Decree of Pain
SB: 4 [MM] Snuff Out
SB: 2 [CS] Deathmark
SB: 3 [7E] Engineered Plague
SB: 1 [HL] Koskun Falls
SB: 3 [GP] Leyline of the Void
SB: 1 [AL] Helm of Obedience
This looks fun as hell to play, and I love rogue type decks. With some modifications, this could be pretty good. Thoughts? I checked prices, the most expensive things are the fetches (I would be using Mires anyways, or maybe some of the new fetches, whichever is cheaper). And I already have LotV, just need the Grindstones.

You could play a Monobrown Stompy now too, with Metalworker being unbanned. Gathan Raiders are really sick when you've pretty much emptied your hand on turn 2.

Wouldn't Gathan Raiders make it... not mono-brown?
