Alright guys, I do not have MODO.

What are other free alternatives where I can playtest my deck online at the same time meet new folks ala MODO?

Thanks in advance

There's also a webcam and some intstant-messenger program with video chat. I've used that quite a bit and like it more than MWS. Certain things are slightly harder (shuffling takes time), but it seems to better simulate games than MWS.

Can I play online with anything at all if I have an Apple computer? I've looked around a bit online but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask the experts.

You can go through some convoluted steps to compile Mindless Automaton (mindless.sf.net) which will let you play against people who have Apprentice. It's an involved process to get it to compile, but you might look at the Fink project or DarwinPorts to find a script to build it. If you're not a programmer or at least very technical, you probably shouldn't bother.

Short of using a webcam and playing against friends, your best bet is either a virtual machine with a copy of Windows or to dual-boot Windows using Boot Camp (if you have an intel mac).

There was one other program that worked on Mac (LackeyCCG, was it?) but you'd basically have nobody to play with.

Unless your Mac is really old, you're better off installing VirtualBox -> some version of XP -> Magic Workstation.

You can try to emulate windows with this or you could just buy a windows machine.

or if you have a newer(Intel) mac you can use boot camp to install windows. Just get a (free) version at the pirate bay.

do you have to pay MWS to play random people online?

No, it just has a nag screen that goes away after a few seconds when you enter the deck editor.

MWS can work on WINE. MWS is still terrible though.

Has Wine fixed the issue with MWS where you don't see text on any cards in your hand or in play? That was a showstopper when I last tried Wine (about 6 months ago).

LackeyCCG works on windows as well as mac, and has a growing community. It's still fairly small, but it's worth checking out.

You mean the Masterbase of MWS.
You can find it at http://www.slightlymagic.net/software/mws/5-mtg-masterbase
