True-Name Nemesis fixed: The card should have been printed as is, but with the following text added (courtesy of Silvergill Adept): "As an additional cost to play True-Name Nemesis, reveal a Merfolk card from your hand or pay :3:". Maybe the number should be 2, whatever.

With that he could probably cost uu and be fine

Wow, Merfolk-decks would be very powerful if they consistantly dropped a turn 2 True-Name, I think his casting cost should still be 1UU.

Two flashy human wizards. The first one is a new Magus (inspired by Hall of Gemstone), the second is a rewrite of another card I posted here on this thread, but this time it's white and has different wording, along with flash and 1 reduced power.

If the card said "your creatures gain immunity to Terminus", then I would agree with you. But Mesmerizing Utopia is no more a narrow "hate" card than Homeward Path is against spells and effects that steal permanents. Utopia works against all effects that tuck your creatures, so it's useful in Commander / EDH, but in addition it also has applications in legacy. You can also use it in combinations with other cards. Cast Hallowed Burial and use Mesmerizing Utopia, so that all enemy creatures are tucked into their owner's library, but your creatures stay on the battlefield. The card has a lot of functionality beyond simply "hose Terminus".

Obviously decks with blue have long had the best tempo cards for a while, and some of the best early game cards, and now they have one of the best mid and late game cards in Treasure Cruise. I wanna see what cards people can come up with to give other colors tempo and early game tools, preferably ones that won't be best in a blue shell. Seems like :w::b::r::g: are lacking in the "rather than pay mana cost" and "unless its controller pays" area.

The biggest problem with Delver is that it is an evasive beat that breaks even with most removal (in fact gut shot is the only one that I know of, and it only takes care of it before it flips) combine this with Daze and Force of Will, it's very easy to suffer a massive tempo loss against an active flipped Delver.

However, one way to look at this is to provide the other colors removal that doesnt simply ignore counterspells, but plays around them nicely.

You can also template that more simply by saying it comes into play tapped if your opponent controls no land. The opening board state can be used to create some tidy wordings like that.

Oh, and if Wizards ever decides the multi-colored decks are getting too plentiful and decides to bans fetchlands, I went ahead and templated these as a possible "fixed" set of duals that would smooth out mana bases without turning everything into 4-color madness.

Your card is really interesting, i like it a lot. The added utility as a sac outlet isn't to be underestimated too!
Also, the template u proposed is a different from mine because it actually come into play tapped if you went first and it's your first turn, but untapped every other turn. Mine enter tapped every turn except your first if you went second. So it's actually quite a bit better, basically a dual for all intent and purposes (could be an excellent budget substitute as a 1-of since you fetch for a dual every other turn).

Maybe something like this:

Fair Taiga
Land - Forest Mountain
Fair Taiga etb tapped. When Fair Taiga etb, if your opponent control as many lands as you do, or more, untap it.
2, sacrifice: draw a card

So basically it etb tapped if you went first, it's usually a functional dual if you went second, and has added utility lategame if you're flooded. Your cards is also really nice so i'd like some other cards with that template like:

http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/cards/1416075413090674.png

Both an anti-storm and anti-counter/heavy cantrip decks. Much less restrictive in general, but something like this would actually make MUD semi-viable in legacy as it work as its own sol land. Also i think your dual cycle would work much better if they said that the other color's spells cost 1 more instead of being literally uncastable. As they are, Shocks, Fastlands etc... are way better.

I like it, could make a nice mechanics cycle, but this card is better in T1 combo than against it - I'd prefer "You can't play spells/activated abilities, skip your next turn" as mechanics of alternate cost

In a conversation with Einherjer he expressed that he likes the Miracles x Delver x Storm meta but feels like Storm needs a little boost to be on par, I do not agree but kept thinking about it and I think this can significatly improve Storm while not making the deck totaly broken

I kind of want all of these to explicitly say "whenever an opponent would draw" just because there's always the possibility that Blue Player gets to wank out a durdly combo with one of them. Like, off the top of my head, something stupid with infinite Brainstorm recursion would deck all your opponents with the White one (not that whatever deck that can do that is amazing, but if it's going to be a hate card it should probably actually be a hate card)

Should be target opponent instead of player, with a caveat stipulation "If that player shuffles their library, draw a card." Giving the blue shell more ability to shuffle it's library is a joke. Changing it to opponent makes it truly disruptive and asymmetrical, thus not an auto-include in the :u: machine. Making it pendant on the shuffle means it's not a free cantrip if for some reason the opponent is untargetable.

Otherwise, this is a very good card. Random disruption in red feels correct, cantrip makes it playable.

Karn, Synthesized :0:
Planeswalker - Karn
2 loyalty
+1 Target opponent reveals a card in his hand at random, you lose 2 life.
-2 Add one colorless mana to your mana pool, exile the top 5 cards from your library.
-7 Exile all permanents from the game.

Flavor: After Karn was liberated, Karn was bound again, this time turned into a Mox/Trinket (Think espers of Final Fantasy 3). May be a little bit too good, but Chalice of the Void at 0, abrupt decay, repeal and lightning bolt are pretty good at keeping it contained. Colorless mana and exiling (from 2 zones: board and deck, instead of board and hand) are themed accordingly.

-2
Exiling the top 5 cards makes it so that you can accidentally blow yourself out of the game by exiling a Tendrils of Agony and ties into Karn's exiling. Karn, Synthesized starts at 2 so it takes at least 2 turns to get 2 mana activations out of it, which keeps it a bit more balanced for the combo players out there. The additional damage also makes it more dangerous for combo to play against tempo and burn decks compared to using lotus petal.

+1
The +1 mirrors the +4 of Karn Liberated. The damage ensures Karn Synthesized isn't better than an Ancient Tomb and references Shahrazad (and thus Karn Liberated's ultimate). Although it's possible to now drop turn 1 Trinisphere, you would lose your Karn, Synthesized and the next one would cost 3 mana.

-7
The ultimate costs -7 mimicking the mana cost of Karn Liberated. The -7 costs a lot of turns and half your life. Shahrazad also eat half your life, and the -7 sort of 'restarts' the game the same way Karn Liberated and Shahrazad do. The idea is that Karn, Synthesized shatters and explodes its power onto the world, destroying everything.

This would be a high impact card, for being the first 0 mana planeswalker; which fits Karn since it is one of the most iconic characters of the game and is very important to magic's storyline. Auto-restricted in Vintage. Not sure whether the ultmate should exile non-land permanents instead.

The art should be a based on Darksteel Relic; but this time charged with the spirit of Karn.

Kaja, Willow of Autumn :g:
Planeswalker - Kaja
2 loyalty
-2: Each player searches his or her library for a Forest card and puts it otb.
+1: Put a green 0/1 Dryad creature with shroud on the battlefield, lose one life.
-6: You get an emblem "Forest you control also have 'tap: add an amout of :g:
to your mana pool equal to the number of Dryad creatures you control.'"

Flavor: Once the Feroz's ban of Ulgrotha weakened and the plane became once again visited by dueling PWs, Kaja went from hiding to defend the Homeland(s). At first she tried to simply stay in a way of the invaders, but lately she decided to actively move war on the hostile ground and of her own plane, so that the inhabitants are spared of the suffering.

-2
(Kaja revitalizes the plane of Ulgrotha.)
Making it search for (even though non-basic) Forest makes it interesting in multiplayer Magic esp. for a Phelddagrif like group hug EDHs, it isn't that easily misused by non-green decks (Legacy sidenote: I guess that tempo StifleWasteDaze piles have little profit from this, right?), and it helps out of manascrew and speeds up the game towards the bomby phase, Timmie like that, don't they?
As a one mana legendary Nature's Lore that can be revoked/needled/stifled and is symmetrical, this shouldn't be overly powerful...

+1
(Kaja builds a defense of her world.)
Ok, this one is questionable, because one-mana repeatable shroudy dudes are nothing to sneeze at... maybe. Maybe not. There are lots of -1/-1 global instants and sorceries, Pyroclasm and friends exist. In Legacy this is far from overpowered especially in non-elves tribe. Making one Dryad at a time makes it far harder to defend another (solid) PW with a cheap turn1 one. Legacy application: this would once again relieve a bit of a blue(/black) pressure, as the unending stream of Goyf blockers, post-Terminus Jace-pesters and Pox-fodder should be a good effect, true?

-6
(Kaja moves the war out of her realm.)
Similarly to Karn, this is a play on original AW's cmc.
No. She won't create a 4/4 shroud avatar. That'll be cheap. Instead of that, the now revitalized plane is able to spawn an immense amount of its own defenders, ones that are able to cross the boundaries of their realm and move the war of their homelands. With all the mana available, the victory is at hand. Note that this isn't "I win" button, and note that it maybe must be worded a bit different, so that the Forests keep their original text (or does the rule "Forest add :g:" simply stay in effect?), so that the "Engineered Plague: dryads" doesn't also equal to one-sided Armageddon. Legacy sidenote: it definitely isn't overpowered for our format, is it? Unless you go really crazy with Dryad Arbors.

I wonder how this would be played. I think some kobold storm variant would try this. You can ramp it to 4 and gain a kobold, exiling your worst card, then, -3 and copy a culling the weak / red ritual / glimpse of nature and go off depending on the list. I think the wording right now is that, even when your Glimpse of Nature is countered, the copy still resolves if you activated Roghahh's -3, correct?

Alternatively, you can make 2 kobolds, and copy 2 spells to achieve card parity again, but that means Rohgahh dies. Could still be very useful in a control list where you can copy treasure cruise or ponder. Turn 1 rohgahh, turn 2 double ponder or double brainstorm with a fetch land is really good.

I don't immediately see how the -7 would be played, but maybe that's just fine.

bruizar
12-30-2014, 04:32 AM
It's STILL busted. Starting on loyalty, it might be okay. With basic forest instead of savannah etc.

When you make it search for a basic forest, it's even better I think. At least, when both players are allowed to search for a forest card, players can splash a dual against it. Otherwise, the effect will often be even more asymmetric than veteran explorer. The fact that it enters the battlefield tapped should offset its power I think.

Consider the following scenario:

Turn 1 (t1), Kaja, +1 get 0/1 arbor
Turn 2 (t1), your opponent does something
Turn 3 (t2), -2 search for a tapped forest or a tapped dryad arbor, your opponent grabs a dryad arbor
Turn 4 (t2), your opponent attacks Kaja with a Dryad arbor. You must chump with your 0/1 dryad.
Turn 5 (t3), +1 get 0/1 arbor, board is now 1/1 dryad arbor, Kaja on 2 loyalty, and a 0/1 dryad.
Turn 6 (t3), Attack with Kaja Dryad Arbor, trade the 2 dryad arbors, or if you searched for a forest, then keep trading 0/1's against his dryad arbor.

Obviously, this only happens when no one is playing other spells, but as you can see it's incredibly slow if your opponent pressures Kaja with a splashed dryad arbor. 9 times out of 10.

When you -2 against combo that splashes a forest card, you are almost certainly dead.

So, in practice I think the +1 will be used most often, ramping to ultimate and then dropping bombs. The -2 will largely be ignored I think. The +1 is very good against decks with only a couple of win conditions. It would lose against swarm decks, but that means you need to overcommit to the board to pressure your opponent which sets you up for sweepers.

I think it's important to realize that, if your opponent does not answer any dryad, you're looking to hardcast Emrakul on turn 5 (5 lands tapping for 4 dryads each). If you add dryad arbor to the equation it becomes crazy quickly. You are 1 mana short theoretically hardcasting Kozilek, Ulamog and Emrakul on turn 5 with the following sequence.

Forest, Kaja, +1, (3 loyalty)
Fetch, Dryad Arbor, +1 (4 loyalty)
Fetch, Dryad Arbor, +1 (5 loyalty)
Fetch, Dryad Arbor, +1 (6 loyalty)
Forest, -6 Emblem
Add 7*5=35 mana to mana pool, triple eldrazi: 10, 15, 11

You will probably be playing with crop rotations and gaea's cradles in this list too.

Bed Decks Palyer

Good points, bruizar. I'm back in the "each player searches for a Forest card" camp, simply because the opponents should be able to find the duals and get rid of the PW (Taiga->Bolt, Bayou->Decay) or at least pressure her (Savannah->dude, Trop->Delver).
Wow. I thought that it's an easy taks to design crappy :g: planeswalker, but the more points you bring, the more I see how problematic this idea of mine was. Even as a one-mana Forcefield, she's not exactly bad, and both the ramp options are not exactly safe.

bruizar
12-30-2014, 05:27 AM
I think that your ultimate is the most dangerous ability of all. The other two are probably fine; but the ultimate has inevitability written all over it. If you resolve Kaja and your opponent cannot interact with you, you are facing Emrakul which is uncounterable. You could even fetch for a land and hardcast 4 Panglacial Wurms from your deck :D.

That said, Abrupt Decay is uncounterable and pyroclasm, electrickery, and so many other answers address Kaja, including Repeal. If it really would become a troublesome card, I could see people play Izzet Staticaster.

It would be great to see if we can make a cycle of 6 of these (5 one mana PW's and Karn)

Bed Decks Palyer
12-30-2014, 07:44 AM
Yes, I know that the ultimate is dangeorus. Otoh, it needs those cards to have either in hand or to get them via say Genesis Wave. Compared to say JTMS (I know, i know... cmc4 card and loooots of turns) this doesn't even win on itself, it needs cards to win with the mana. Notto mention that both Decay prior the emblem and PYroclasm any time during the "build up" is a serious hindrance. The best answer I can come with is that uncounterable deal two dmg to both players and all creatures that conveniently and simultaneously kills dryads and cripples Kaja.

Yes, I'd love if we can make a full cycle. So far Karn is set (and it's imho a well designed, maybe he should be limited to "destroy non-lands") and the red one (whom I cannot spell right :-P ) is also interesting.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, the copy ability should circumvent counterspells the same way that, say, storm triggers do.

I think the big pay-off for the copy ability is to copy bigger spells like Fireblast and Seething Song (and yes *sigh* Treasure Cruise) rather than Glimpse of Nature or Brainstorm. It might well be too strong, regardless.

The -3 and -7 abilities are references to Howl of the Horde and Fury of the Horde.

The -7 doesn't seem so strong to me either, and I'm also fine with that.

The fact that it makes Kobolds and was cheap made me think of the old cheeri0s storm deck, so copying a Glimpse would be very relevant.

Okay here's another attempt.

After killing and taking possession of Kenan Sahrmal's body, the body rejected Lim Dûl's evil spirit. The great necromancer Lim Dûl, once a slave to Leshrac, returned to his true form, a living ball of raw flesh. The living remains of Lim Dûl wander the planes, in search of a suitable host: one with a soul as dark as his own.

Lim Dûl, The Living Remains
Snow Planeswalker - Lim Dûl
B
+1: Sacrifice a creature, then gain 2 life. Use this ability only if you have a creature.
-3: Scry 1, then lose 1 life. You may repeat this as many times as you want.
-4: Put a 2/2 Zombie into play for each snow permanent you control.
2 loyalty

+1: Sacrifice a creature, then gain 2 life.
Lim Dûl's spirit takes possession of a new body, only to find out that his host rejects Lim Dûl's dark spirit.

This ability gives you a little bit more life to fuel the second ability. Other than that it's pretty bad, but serves a goal in the overall design of the card. It makes Lim Dûl very fragile. Planeswalkers are normally judged by their ability to defend themselves (e.g. jace bounce, elspeth token); however, Lim Dûl does not only fail to protect itself, but opens itself up to aggro. This ability fairs well with the zombie theme, cards like Gravecrawler and Bloodghast can use the +1 consistently. The ability is also a good sack outlet for cards like Veteran Explorer. The +1 is a costly barrier to the other two abilities, which are considerably more powerful.

-3: Scry 1, then lose 1 life. You may repeat this as many times as you want.
Lim Dûl searches the planes for a suitable host: one as dark as his own.

This is a reference to Lim Dûl's vault. This ability is very strong, since it looks a little like Spoils of the Vault, Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Consultation. However, getting Lim Dûl to 3 loyalty is quiet a pain since it requires you to run creatures, which do not lend themselves very well to black combo decks. The fact that this is sorcery speed balances the ability, because you can't draw the card immediately after popping the -3. It's therefore also weak to cards like Jace, the Mindsculptor or Thought Scour.

-4: Put a 2/2 Zombie into play for each snow permanent you control.
Lim Dûl summons his fallen armies from the snowy peaks at Gix.

Lim Dûl became a necromancer after finding the ring of Mairsil, nearly dying during a blizzard near the conclave of mages. This ability ties into his necromancy skills. This ability gives Lim Dûl a beat down plan, but usually the size of the army shouldn't be too big. Dark Depths, Scrying Sheets, Snow-Covered Swamp are the better snow cards that can fuel this. This ability is best in a mono black deck (Pox, Donner Afterparty). Pox can use the card selection, and (hopefully) the deck building requirements are narrow enough so that blue decks do not benefit from it.

As for the art, I was thinking of something like Wall of Putrid Flesh and Living Wall.

Another design route would be to make it so that you can only play this card from your graveyard, similar to Haakon, Stromgald Scourge. This would make it quiet cool in dredge, or with entomb, and fits nicely with the taking possession of a living creature lore.

Just trying something here

Kaja, Willow of Autumn :g:
Planeswalker - Kaja
2 loyalty
-2: Each player searches his or her library for a forest card and puts it on the battlefield tapped.
+1: Put a green 0/1 Dryad creature on the battlefield, lose one life.
-6: You get an emblem with "Basic forests also have "T: Sacrifice a dryad creature, target land becomes a basic forest." and an emblem with "Dryad creatures get +1/+0, shroud and forestwalk."

OR

Kaja, Willow of Autumn :g:
Planeswalker - Kaja
2 loyalty
-2: Each player searches his or her library for a forest card and puts it on the battlefield tapped.
+1: Put a green 0/1 Dryad creature on the battlefield, lose one life.
-6: Choose one —
• You get an emblem with "Basic forests also have "T: Sacrifice a dryad creature, target land becomes a basic forest."
• You get an emblem with "Dryad creatures get +1/+0, shroud and forestwalk.

The ultimate is unique because you get two emblems instead of one. This is quiet nice, because, like Jace and Garruk Relentless, the card has more to offer than 3 abilities, but it does so different from all the other current planeswalkers (double emblems). The reason for this is that in the lore it states that Autumn Willow has several options: 1) restart the mana channels at the cost of her creatures. 2) do nothing and watch the strength of the Homelands fade (not a real option) 3) wait for a miracle. Option 1 is bad (doesn't want to kill her own creatures), option 2 is unacceptable and option 3 is foolish. (actually option 2 and 3 are the same :p)

:1: The first emblem represents her choice to restart the mana channels after Feroz's Ban failed. Kaja sacrifices her dryads in order to revitalize the world through the power of nature. This plays like a green blood moon. You can disrupt 4 lands by tapping 4 forests and sacrificing your dryads, so it's a green moon for :g: :g: :g: :g: if your opponent didn't kill your Dryads before popping your ultimate. It's not a hardlock because you can still draw new lands and most likely, the opponent will not have Kaja or any Dryads left. You could use fetchlands to get Dryad Arbor and use this as a pseudo wasteland, which is interesting and promotes players to play monocolored / non-blue. The emblem grants the ability only to basic forests, because it's too easy to splash Autumn Willow otherwise, and because Autum Willow resides in the deep woods of the Homelands, not in the tropical islands :-).

:2: The second emblem is a nod to the fact that Autumn Willow was the very first card with shroud in the game. The emblem represents the miracle. It turns your Dryads into an unblockable win condition and Dryad Arbor suddenly gives Truename Nemesis a run for its money. Against a player that does not have any forests in play, you will likely sacrifice one Dryad to take your opponent's best land and attack with the 3 remaining Dryads. I think this would play strategically similar to Lingering Souls, where going all in or timing the flashback depends on your matchup (clock vs terminus; in this case clock plus minor mana disruption vs a 'green blood moon' effect). 3 virtually unblockable shrouded 1/1's are also a nod to True Name Nemesis, and the fact that it should have never been blue.

The emblems are based on the following part:

Shortly thereafter, Feroz's Ban started to fail, and she felt the energies that sustained her begin to fade. She knows that with her current strength, she may have a chance at restarting the mana channels, thus, over time, turning the world from a wasteland back into one rich with life. However, this will likely cost the lives of every creature in the Homelands. She is willing to destroy herself and Baron Sengir for the greater good, but she cannot bear to kill the Folk of An-Havva.

But if Autumn Willow doesn't use her power, then the strength of the Homelands will fade until even she ceases to exist, and what she saw in the vision may indeed come true. Now Autumn Willow is at a loss for what to do and is trying to find some third option, some miracle, because to destroy all the ones that she loves brings a cruelty that even a creature derived from balance and nature cannot endure. So she waits for a miracle that will keep her from using the very primal forces of nature against those that she loves more than life.

I could use some feedback on the two different versions. I think the first version offers a little more strategic depth, because you really only use the second emblem if the opponent has forests in play. But I like the second version a little better because I feel it's more of a flavor win by forcing the player to make the same choice as the Autumn Willow.

Wow, that was brilliant post with lots of amazing ideas. I'm ashamed that my answer will be short...

The second version is much more interesting, imho. I mean: much more! I'd choose this one, namely considering that Kaja, being one mana Nature's Lore or repeatable Forcefield, is pretty overpowered. The fact that her Big Ultimate (the two emblems combined) takes whoping 12 loyalty points and an amazing numbers of turns, balanes her other two abilites. This is especially important in a color with access to Doubling Season, although I do understand that it'll be Kaja, not DS, what will be played first.
The only thing I'm not sure is the Nature's Lore. I liked how the opponents could search for dual (it made her less one-sided), and I could see an ability saying "you search for basic Forests, other players for Forest", but this will make the text long, it'll be far less elegant and moreover, this ability won't be used too often, so lets keep it one-sided.

Much thanks for what you've done!

Oops, I just copied the first two abilities. It should read forest card, fixed!

I'm glad you like it. I agree that the second version seems more balanced and interesting. Getting two emblems for a 1 mana planeswalker is a little bit OP; plus a planeswalker with bulleted options is sort of awesome :D.

For what it's worth, here is a little insight on how I try to create these.
I personally really like it when cards look really good on paper, but once you start to examine them in the context of specific decks, they fall apart a little bit because of all sorts of tensions with other cards and deck frameworks. Karn is a good example of this, it looks like a mox without a drawback, but upon closer inspection it's more like a colorless lotus petal. Yes you can get to 3 (colorless) mana turn 1, but you could get to 3 colored mana with a lotus petal so it doesn't actually change the explosiveness of decks too much. There's built in tension with Trinisphere. It enables turn 1 Trinisphere (soft lock) but you will be locked under it too; it does not enable turn 1 Blood Moon which can be a hardlock. I would expect that spoiler season's reaction to Karn would be OMG the world is falling, a 0 mana planeswalker!!!! Only to realize that there is an opportunity cost to playing him as well as the fact that randomly probing your opponent for 1 card really adds up. Life is a resource, but it's a non negligble resource. We have long departed from the notion that the only life point that matters is the last one with cards such as Ancient Tomb, Thoughtseize, fetch and Gitaxian Probe. Every point counts.

I tried to do the same for Kaja. I like how Choke interacts with Kaja. Although it's similar to Choke in the fact that it ties up mana, Kaja works exactly opposite to Choke. Kaja is to Choke as Blood Moon is to Back to Basics; but it's infinitely more fair because it is disrupted so easily and takes until turn 5 to happen. Also, you can top-deck yourself out of Kaja's mana channeling emblem. The card would be good in a green stax deck, because you can feed dryads to smokestack; but green stax is a subpar deck to begin with and relies on sol land to perform (which isn't great for Kaja.) A sweet interaction is that you can turn your ancient tombs into basic forests when the damage pressures you too much, or drop that second city of traitors by making the one already in play a basic forest. Also, green stax decks run chalice of the void, and since cavern of souls doesn't work on planeswalkers, there's built-in tension between Kaja and Chalice decks, similar to the way there's built-in tension between Karn and Trinisphere.

I ideally want to make Lim Dûl equivalent to a black sylvan library / brainstorm; it should enable tutoring which is black's most potent and iconic ability, but it should cost you a lot and you shouldn't be able to do it in every deck, because then blue will just splash it and run it alongside brainstorm like they always do. It should be archetypically black to reflect the way Green Sun's Zenith and Sylvan Library are archetypically green and brainstorm and ponder are archetypically blue.

Amazing post once again! I like the thought processes behind the cards, I did nothing similar when designing the original Kaja, as my main idea was to take some of the archetypically green apsects (ramp, dudes, more ramp and more dudes) without realizing how broken is the result.

Thought about a counter, but... eh. Dogs are picky too and sometimes they hang out with other people, especially if they have food.
-1: Dogs are also scampy little jerks sometimes. Well, my dog is. Being a coonhound/blue heeler mix, she likes to herd. This means nipping at feet and legs to redirect people.
-7: Dogs like to play fetch. I feel this applies to many dogs besides my dog. I like the idea of a planeswalking hound being able to chomp down on a spell like it's a Frisbee. Perhaps this is without enough precedent in White, or perhaps it should not be "permanent OR spell" and just one or the other. But really, isn't there something cute about the notion that a supercharged, spark-carrying Isamaru could see an inbound spell and just be like "RUH ROH" and snag it out of the aether and then rip it to pieces? I like this idea.

Given the humor in the card, I'm not sure how serious your attempt was, but here's my feedback anyway. Although I really like Isamaru as a planeswalker (especially given the fact that its a dog; which makes sense with the low mana cost), it would have been nice if you picked up where the storyline stopped so that the abilities make a little bit more sense. As for the abilities, I'm missing the tension between the abilities as it only has good ones. They don't really interact with each other which would have been cool. There are currently no drawbacks to the card in terms of self infliction of damage casting or ramping restrictions. It would be nice if you could make the abilities more integrated in the story and the color. The card doesn't really feel white to me (except for the -1). How do you expect people would play with this? I'd just ramp this card up as fast as possible and lock my opponent out with a free Counterspell every turn after cleaning up the threats with the emblem. The ultimate is way way way too strong and easy too get; and the -1 is too effective at combating creatures; it kills delvers, pyromancers and elves.dec which also going to 4 loyalty before a lightning bolt can even attempt to kill it.

For reference, here's some background on Isamaru
"Isamaru was the great white akita dog of daimyo Takeshi Konda. He was well-trained by Konda himself, but like Konda's own daughter, he suffered from the daimyo's lack of attention after Konda's crime. He found a great companion in Michiko.

Isamaru was present when Toshi Umezawa arrived to free Michiko from her own room, where she was locked away by her father after her journey to Jukai. Later, when O-Kagachi approached Eiganjo, General Takeno released Isamaru from the gates of the castle to give the dog a chance to survive. Isamaru ran to Eiganjo's evacuated population and helped them fight the akki horde that assailed the Towabara plains.

Even later, Isamaru was seen in Towabara again when Toshi arrived to borrow a battle moth from the remaining stables. He was with Constable Aoyama, who tried to prevent Toshi from stealing the animal. Toshi willed himself into the shadows and transported Isamaru to Jukai, near Michiko's position."

You shouldn't underestimate the potential for lifeloss. With Treasure Cruise and Force of Will as staples (along with possibly Dig Through Time), it is absolutely possible to hit a situation where you have to pay some real life. Normally you would dump a land in the graveyard and take 0 damage, but what if that was the only land you saw and you really need that land? Besides, I don't mind a black card being labeled a "must play", it will shake up the dynamics of the format quite a bit. The card would also be good in nonblue shells, in a tier 2-3 deck like Zombies, for example: Dump a Gravecrawler or Bloodghast into the graveyard, etc. Also good with Cabal Therapy.

EDIT: But I changed it into a Sorcery to lower the power level.

Since people love to suggest anti-Brainstorm cards without ever bringing up actual suggestions, here's a little challenge:

- design an anti-Brainstorm card that is maindeckable without completely gimping yourself when your opponent isn't playing Brainstorm or card draw in general
- the card must not cost more than 1 mana unless it has some alternate casting cost
- the card must be symmetrical, thus not going well with Brainstorm itself (sacrifice effects in general are only temporary and thus not symmetrical); it also mustn't be blue in any form
- keep the design reasonable (neither too OP nor crude as Tom LaPille's attempt at hate cards)
- the more decks can play it, the better

Let's see what people can come up with.

I would like a land to hate on brainstorm, costing nothing to bring into play, and being able to tap for colorless mana.

Bermuda Triangle
Tap: add 1 to your manapool
Tap, sacrifice Bermuda Triangle: Target opponent can’t draw cards this turn.

It hates on carddraw, but for the price of a sacced landdrop. The more cards your opponent draws (brainstorm, enter the infinite, glimpse, …), the bigger the effect. You could replace “can draw cards” with “can’t add cards to hand” to hate on Ad Nauseam as well.
Activating this versus brainstorm would be especially painful since your opponent still has to put two cards back on top of the library, which is a 5-for-1. Hurray crop rotation!

Actually it can be used in any color, it can be easily recycled with quite powerful effect - opponent skip draw, and you draw instead so probably very powerful as 1 cmc. @Tylert: I never said that the challenge is an easy one, considering how OP Brainstorm is.

@Ingo & Fatal: Sacrifice effects disqualify themselves since they aren't symmetrical and can be abused with blue decks. I've updated the challenge primer to reflect that.

@Dice_Box: Works, but gimps yourself against non-draw decks and by not having it in your opening hand.

Not sure if any good, or maybe too good and I just don't see it. It "feels like" one of those things that either will never matter (fair decks don't really care about this effect) or it will completely dominate a game (the Brainstorm player now has to exile to BS and put two cards from hand on top of their library, and chances are they won't be casting this EOT) and so because it is swingy, I just have no idea. But it is an effect which Red seems to be tending towards anyway; the idea that "castable exiling" is their version of "card drawing", and so I feel like it's within Red's scope to do this.

How would this interact with the Miracles trigger? Favorably (for the :r: player), I assume.
I would like this even if it was a Gray Ogre body without haste. At those stats it doesn't seem like it would harm Limited, Standard, or Modern... But it would be playable in MY petdeck, so Wizards should make it!

Although a 1 mana Uba Mask with a body feels kinda wrong. I would use the Chains wording instead:

If a player would draw a card except the first one he or she draws in his or her draw step each turn, that player exiles that card instead. They may cast that card as if it were in their hand until end of turn.

Still feels like a very red effect and kinda discourages "in response" Brainstorming.

I was about to praise it as a really nice design until I realized that it turns Brainstorm essentially into a pseudo-Ancestral Recall with an empty hand, which is less awesome for its intended purpose.

Hard to say how to fix it. Discard first, then draw would also be a red effect, but then again, it would be just a red Chains.

@Tylert: I think noncreature permanents can be done, it just needs to be a bit more tricky:

First rough, quite OP draft would be:

Bound in Darkness :b:
Enchantment
When you cast Bound in Darkness, target opponent discards a card.
Spells and abilities can't cause players to draw extra cards.
I'm aware that it's a significantly better Chains due to being cheaper and having an uncounterable discard effect attached to it. Hardly balanced. How about some alternate casting mode instead?

Bound in Darkness :2::b:
Enchantment
You may exile a black card from your hand rather than pay Bound in Darkness' mana cost. If you do, it gains flash.
When you cast Bound in Darkness, if its mana cost was paid, target player reveals his or her hand. You choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card.
Spells and abilities can't cause players to draw extra cards.

I think this version is more interesting than the first draft since it gives you room for decision. The alternate cost + flash ensures that you can catch Brainstorm and other dumb draw spells, although at a small cost. The alternate cast mode gives you a discard spell, although a rather expensive one. And it wouldn't be completely dead against various decks. And at the very least, it wouldn't make Chains automatically obsolete by design alone.

Flavor reasons aside, would it be too strong if it was non-legendary?

I wonder if it would be too good if it stayed legendary, but could tap for mana of any color instead. If it only produces :1:, it competes with Wasteland for slots. As a Rainbow land, it could support a great variety of decks. Or maybe being able to tap for :1: normally or any color by paying 1 life, similiar to Mana Confluence? That would sound fair.

See, I don't think that's (solely) why people play Brainstorm - it's the buffet of things that BS brings to the table, the card filtering/discard protecting/library manipulating stuff, and Chandra-drawing fucks with all of that. It's true that an empty hand would turn it into an Ancestral Recall, but only if they can play all their cards that very same turn.

If the Brainstorming player is Hellbent instead of trying to decide which 7 to keep then it's done its job, AFAIC.

- design an anti-Brainstorm card that is maindeckable without completely gimping yourself when your opponent isn't playing Brainstorm or card draw in general
...
- the card must be symmetrical, thus not going well with Brainstorm itself (sacrifice effects in general are only temporary and thus not symmetrical); it also mustn't be blue in any form
...

Considering how fundamentally strong Brainstorm is, those two are tough to put together.

Here are some attempts at non-creature effects.

Balanced Books
W

Leyline of Confusion

Whenever a player would draw a card, if that player has a card in his or her hand, that player exiles a card from his or her hand at random, and draws two cards instead.

Fairy Circle
G
Instant
When you cast fairy circle, copy it once for each card an opponent drew this turn.
[Edit: This was too U-friendly, so I added.]
As an additional cost to cast fairy circle discard a card for each card you drew this turn.
Put a 1/1 saproling creature into play.

Chain of Command

Exile Chain of command. Starting next turn, that player may play chain of command without paying its mana cost.

It would be nice if the hatecard would be a cantrip as well, just like brainstorm.
Something like:

I have already posted this leyline earlier. In a meta very heavy with card draw, I believe this is maindeckable in certain decks.

Leyline of Parity :2::w::w:

This is not a cantrip. This is one of the most broken card advantage spells someone has ever suggested. For a single green mana you basically get instant speed Divination with an upside of potentially using it to counter something. This would be splashed in literally ever deck that could afford it. Not because of the countering part but because of the +1 card advantage.

Instants and sorceries in general fail the symmetry test unless you want to go for ham-fisted Tom LaPille designs. All they would do is feed Brainstorm decks even more if they were strong enough.

Leylines in general would make fine sideboard cards, but ask yourself: Would you include it to your MD if it actually existed?

@Vicar in a tutu: Mindscourge Goblin has some pretty aggressive stats. It's two power and at least one ping per natural draw. That's quite a lot for a mere :r:.

@Julian23: I agree that the card is totally unbalanced. I wonder if the design could be salvaged:

Gaea's Interlude: :g:
Instant:
Choose one -
* Players can't draw cards this turn.
* Draw a card.

It would probably fit more into white or black with these modes. Again, it would fail the symmetry test, but I wonder how many blue decks would try to run it.

I liked the thought of a brainstorm-hatecard being a cantrip. Perhaps it's too overpowered, and it's better to drop the carddraw? Then again, brainstorm itself is pretty busted too, perhaps a broken card is needed as counterweight against blue shell/brainstorm's dominance.

The choice between the two effects (drawhate and counter) was added because it's manainsufficiency to leave 1 mana open to cast the first, in hopes of responding to brainstorm; By adding a secondary use, the counterpart, leaving a mana open is much more flexible and efficient. So I would prefer on dropping the carddrawpart, instead of the counterpart.

Even without the cantrip option, you can cast it during the opponent's upkeep. It's a super-counter for brainstorm, an effective counter to treasure cruise and SDT miracle activations, and a reasonable response to ponder, gitaxian probe, elvish visionary, mental note, and thought scour. It's useful against every deck in the DTB and good to decent in other matchups. Combo decks might maindeck it.

But, requires you to keep a mana open, whereas the rest of the deck isn't built to make use of this (by packing counters for example). I think it's hardly that powerful when it requires you to be one landdrop behind, especially versus tempodecks.

Also, choosing between "draw a card" and "negate your opponents drawstep" is quite alike in terms of cardadvantage.

These reasons is why I like a "counterspell-versus-blue better" as the second choice, instead of "draw a card".

I don't understand what you mean. It can be played as a proactive card - leave a green mana open on your turn to respond to any EoT Brainstorms or instant speed cantrips, and, if there aren't any, you cast it on the opponent's upkeep as a virtual cantrip and still lock that player out of using Ponder or Treasure Cruise for the turn.

The primary effect is: "Target player can't draw cards this turn, if you paid :g:"
It's like you say, you should keep your mana open until EOT to catch brainstorm when playing against blue. But if there's no brainstorm following, the upkeep-draw-negation isn't that good (also as you say, just a virtual cantrip). Suppose you'd have a Red Elemental Blast in hand at the same time, you could use your open mana to counter the next blue spell being cast, which is probably a stronger play than the virtual cantrip.

That's why I suggested the secondary effect: "Counter target blue spell, if you paid :r:"
If you keep your mana open to catch a brainstorm but it ain't coming, you still have a red-elemental-blast-effect in the same card, for countering the next blue spell that gets cast. Having a draw-denial and a counter in one card makes sense, because they both could use the mana you left open, both in a different scenario.

I don't really think only trying to attack Brainstorm the card specifically is the way to go. It's too efficient and by the time you get your hate online, it could be irrelevant. There are also real flavor/color pie concerns to take into account. And creating narrow answers doesn't lead to interesting gameplay. Here are some ideas I've had keeping in mind I'm terrible at names:

Aside from being "cheap" LD and Maro hating that, Volcanic Servant can be run with blue decks. Why not change it to "When ~ enters the battlefield, each player sacrifices an Island."? Same outcome in nonblue decks, but you would screw yourself over in blue decks.

Fire Confidant is a cool concept, but what exactly prevents you from feeding it with Brainstorm? That's not how you make the format less blue.

Same for the Guilde dude. While it's nice for GSZ, what prevents UGx decks from running a few GSZ (free extra shuffles - yeah!) alongside it?

Tree Canopy works, although the "drawback" is a bit ham-fisted.

Underworld Dreams Dude seems alright. Not great, just kinda alright.

I actually deleted all my explanations so my post wouldn't be a million years long, and you ended up asking a bunch of questions I asked myself.

1) RR is generally a lot to ask of the URx decks, and I don't think it's much of a better sideboard card than REB. I did consider the "each player sacrifices" wording for that reason, though. It could work but it could also prevent the caster from effectively mana screwing a player. As for whether it could be printed, Peak Eruption is in Theros and this card is pretty much the same sort of effect. It's not like players are using blue mana to remove it in Standard or anywhere, and as a 2/2 it will die to most commonly played standard removal. Further, duals in standard don't tend to have land types, so it won't hit those cards.

2) Bob himself doesn't make the cut in blue decks anymore, and this card is worse than him in those decks because you could always flip over a counterspell. I don't even know if this card is good but it might be interesting.

3) I'm not even sure this card is good in Legacy, even in a blue deck. It fixes your draws and dies to a Delver in a pinch, but is easily removed. Again, no reason for a blue deck to play this over Hierarch or DRS given that it will already have a superior suite of hand fixing.

4) The flavor of this card is supposed to be a jungle that floods at certain times of year. In this case, when you embrace non-green magic (anything but creatures and lands, as Maro has stated often), you get no effect; if you go so far as to bring water magic into its presence, you lose everything. I got the idea when I took my kid to the aquarium and there was an exhibit about such a habitat.

5) I know. I can't really think of a better black card at the moment that isn't just Necropotence or a color-shifted Sylvan Library or Chains on a stick.

I also can't think of a white card at all. White can't draw cards, and while it can stop people from doing so, we see from SotL that effect is limited. Need to think harder there. Thalia is as good as it gets at the moment.

Gold cards, planeswalkers, and artifacts are an interesting space, but harder to conceptualize. Artifacts are also super problematic in blue, especially in Vintage.

White could have Tithe effects (preferable for basic Plains) or cards similiar to Ranger of Eos which looks for white creatures with low CMC or power (chances are that it would end in an SFM-fetching orgy).

There were also rebels.

White has balance-type effects:
Draw a card for each card that target opponent drew this turn unless that player drew a card from a spell or effect you controlled.

Tax effects:
Whenever a player would draw a card, that player may pay 1 mana for each card he or she alntoiready drew this turn and then draw a card, or exile that card.

Lock effects:
Players can't draw cards. Each player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her hand at the beginning of his or her first main phase.

Token spitting:
Whenever a spell or effect makes an opponent draw a card, put 1/1 soldier token into play. Whenever a spell or effect makes you draw a card, each opponent puts a 1/1 solider token into play.

Reclamation effects:
Whenever a player looks at a card on top of his or her library, or puts a card on top of his or her library, each of that player's opponents may return a creature card with casting cost 1 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.

To continue the "reasons not to play blue":

Censorship 1W
Enchantment
Players can't manipulate libraries (players can't shuffle, look, search or reveal cards from libraries).
Players can't draw more than 1 card a turn.

Underworld Knight RB
Creature - Knight
Protection from white, first strike.
Whenever a player draw a card, he or she lose 1 life.
2/2

Love the enchantment, might even give it flash. It's a specific hate card that can miss multiple "fair" decks. That it hates blue and combo isn't a reason it shouldn't be printed/conceived. It also misses cards like Ponder or Bob, so there's wiggle room for creative deck builders.

Like the Underworld Knight, would want something like haste included. Just a lil edge to make it over the top. Allowing it to hit the turn it came into play, or if it were a deathtouch included, slightly higher power. As written, it looks like an uncommon, I'd be interested to see it as a rare. Well done though.

....

"Can't manipulate libraries" is ill-defined. For example, if someone tries to search their library under Aven Mindcensor and this, what happens? Or if someone tries to use Noxious Revival, or Scroll Rack or Mirror of Fate and does Shared Fate work and what about dredge...

Instant
Target player discard a card. Fateseal 2.

Reverse Ponder for black. Since discard's much worse than draw, card is made instant. Give black some reason to be a base color for decks.

Black doesn't get instant-speed discard any more. That's been moved to blue's part of the color pie with cards like Vendillion Clique. More seriously, instant speed discard cast during the draw step is obnoxious.

The bidding ends if the high bid stands. The high bidder loses life equal to the high bid and places the exiled card into his or her hand.

instant speed discard cast during the draw step is obnoxious.

Obnoxious is very subjective. I find counterspells obnoxious. Critiques like this are not helpful as they are easily dismissed.

Noted about V. Clique, reckon that's a mistake though along the lines of :u: can do anything- magic! Instant speed discard that is not targeted should be fine, draw step or not. Adds "decision trees" and "interaction", those are good things right?

I think templating it this way would be cleaner:

If a player would draw a card, that player exiles that card instead. If a land card is exiled this way, its owner puts that card into his or her hand. ...

As it stands, I'm not sure what happens if a land card is revealed.

An alternative auction format might also be easier to describe ... and bloodier.

Each player, in turn order may pay 1 life or pass until all players have passed after the last time life was paid this way. The last player to pay life for a card this way may play that card as if it were in his or her hand.

Sorry, I should have been clearer:

Instant speed discard effects are (at least historically) unfriendly to new players both in terms of intrinsic mechanics, and because they can cause timing confusion - especially when cast during the draw step. Even if the rules would accommodate it pretty well, WoTC has avoided instant speed pure discard disruption for longer than it's hated on land destruction, so I don't think they'd print the card.

It's a subtle gripe, but if you're going to create a card that is 'outside' a Blue deck, don't make it so bloody easy to cast :D :1::wg: is a really soft casting cost and there are so many UG or UW lists that would be able to just adopt this card without really flinching. I was thinking how to increase the draw quality for nonblue decks in Eternal formats. So the basic idea was this:

Mind Map :1:
Artifact
Tap: Scry 1.

Alot stronger than Crystal Ball and Witches' Eye, but then again, this would be aimed at Legacy (and Vintage). However, the basic design has some issues:

- it's card disadvantage with no ability to compensate like Top or Sylvan Library, for a mere card filter
- if it's good enough, blue decks would run it as well
- going into most decks without a drawback isn't desirable

Which led me to this:

Mind Map :1:
Artifact
Spells and abilities can't cause players to draw cards.
Tap: Scry 1.

This kills three birds with one stone. It doesn't automatically go into every deck (especially blue ones), it nerfes cantrip and other broken cards like Griselbrand, and it helps fixing the draws of nonblue decks.

Unluckyman Mountain
Land
When Unluckyman Mountain ETB, if you control no other permanents and you have 7 cards in your hand, deal 3 damage to your opponent.
T, pay 1 life: add R to your mana pool

Forest would search another forest from deck and add to your hand, island would scry 2, black would make opponent discard 1 or fateseal 2, plain would give you a 2/1.

As for making a red varaint of D&T Viable, i think this could do it:

I originally thought it'd be cool to put it in the Rebel chain just because, like, why not - it was an infamous tribe at the time and was trying to be relevant in Vintage with stuff like Standstill and blue counters and shit, and it wasn't doing a real great job of it.

After seeing Thalia be a real thing, I have to wonder if the ability would actually be okay if it were templated a little differently like 'noncreature spells of the chosen color' or whatever. It makes it less exciting for Standard but gets better as it trickles down through Eternal formats, which is usually what the more interesting printings as of late do, so. I dunno.

I could also see it being a bear to play around with a nut-draw or like, being able to regularly play it turn 1/turn 2 with Ramosian Sargeant and Chrome Mox/Ancient Tombs/other Sol lands. So it is probably fundamentally unable to stand in its current incarnation.

Humble Squire 1W
Creature - Human Squire
Flash
When Humble Squire ETB, search your library for a human creature, reveal it, and add it to your hand.
I bring news of my lord.
1/2

The green card is intended as a promoter of both the basic land theme of green, and the mana fixingtheme. Basically draw 2 for 1G, but one is a basic land and you have to play a consistent number of basic lands to make it efficient. 1 less mana than Krosan Tusker which however is uncounterable and has an option to play it as a creature, without the basic land requirement.

The black card is essentially a draw 2 that give you some control over what you draw in the right deck, and negate your opponent recursion options. Gives you some control on the things Black should be more adept at controlling, the graveyard. Not playable in every deck, but only in some metagames where reanimating strategies are at least present, and returning creatures from your graveyard isn't terrible.

Red card is a bit tricky. While it may look as a "draw 1, deal 3 damage", or, cycling Lava Spike for 1R, in reality it can be much worse. You can't play it on 2 lands for example, because your opponent will just give you 2 cards which u can't play. So it's a card that has to be played on very low curves, and in decks that want to kill your opponent fast with damage. So, burn, and maybe red combo. It's a punisher card, but actually good.

The white card is a Stoneforge mystic for human creatures. Without the option to actually cheat them into play, but still. A 1/2 creature tutor for 1W still give you a lot of versatility. KotR, Thalia, and lots of good utility/hate creatures can be fetched with this. Human is a huge tribe.

Also, again, some lands to combat flooding/screw/going 2nd

Gaea's Library
Land
T: add 1 to your mana pool
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may reveal three or more basic land from your hand. If you do, draw a card.

Flooded with basic lands isn't that bad with this.

The Coin 3
Artifact
If you started second this game, the Coin cost 3 less to play.
Tap, sacrifice: add 1 of any color to your mana pool and draw a card.

Lotus petal + cycle if you start second, essentially 2 mana cycler if you went first. Sideboard only card probably, but still extremely good.

Gaea's Library

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may reveal three or more basic land from your hand. If you do, draw a card.

Flooded with basic lands isn't that bad with this.

This would be great, and indeed, it should be tap instead of a triggered ability. It also would be to powerful, even if you had to tap it.

Yea, Fish could really use it. Maybe Nic Fit as well. Who else runs three basics total? Burn? Painter? Not to say it's not strong but when people talk about basics in Legacy I think about Fish first.

Thing is, don't you want to play your lands? I don't think the trade-off between choosing to play lands from your hand or not is very rewarding.

I believe it would be better to tie the ability to a minimum number of basics you have to control. Basically, this:

{further activation cost necessary for balance}, tap: Draw a card. Activate this ability only if you control X or more basic lands.

Think Mikokoro, Center of the Sea, but with a different drawback.

If Continous Knowledge would be exiled from your hand, or graveyard, you may draw a card.

Synergy with Snapcaster Mage, Dig through Time, and Force of Will. Only for hand or graveyard to rule out a potential Continous Knowledge+Surgical Extraction blowout for 4 cards. I don't think it's the most overpowered cantrip, but it is damn strong in the right shell. I would love to have this card .

I made my Gaea's library work on trigger to avoid untap and multiple per-turn usages. And even with land tax or in a fish shell, it's still a colorless land that require 1-2 turns of setup to actually work. I'm pretty sure i'd be borderline playable, nothing much better.
To promote basics and combat flood/screw variance, maybe something like this is simpler and better:

LushLands
Land
When Lush Grounds ETB, you may discard a basic land from your hand. If you do, draw a card.
T: add 1 to your mana pool.

Extremely simple, and sort of a reverse-wasteland, in the sense that while waste punishes greed decks, this help non greedy decks that play many lands. Also has additional sinergy for discard and graveyard filling engines. Also, between wastes and this, even a monocolor deck can't run both easily.

It shouldn't work with flashback since the spell goes on the stack, and then exiles from there. It should probably also specify 'exiled face up' just to keep things clear. I have no idea how it would interact with Serum Powder.

IMO the card would be way too strong.

Well its like a wasteland for fetchis + its a landslot that stifles, so shouldnt it be better than Stifle? Maybe even better than wasteland, stormdecks have hard times to deal with lands...
And lol i thoguht about makeing it U, T: ~Stifle

Seems to be in color, though it accomplishes neither of the effects I was looking for. Can't mess with fetchies and does not counter storm. Though that is a nifty toy. You get mana acceleration instead of land destruction and instead of countering the effects of Tendrils, you actually get to kill them with their own spell if I am seeing this correctly.

Yeah. I understand that hard counters are important for the game, but I tend to think that effective counters are more fun in practice.

Something like Tunnel Ignus or smth?

Unstable Tunnel 2RR
Instant
Target player sacrifice a land. Unstable Tunnel can't be countered.
If a land went into a graveyard from anywhere this turn, you may play Unstable Tunnel for R.

Good against fetches and with wastes. Cost reduction to R to avoid easy chains with Waste-> triple tunnel for 0.

A fun "red" effect.

Chaos of Knowledge RR
Enchantment
If a player would search his library, he draw a card instead.

Basically turn all fetches and tutors into cantrips. It also double as deck thinning for you when you don't need lands anymore. Not sure how actually good the effect is, but it seems a pretty fun fetch hoser. Also hose infernal tutors, KotR, SFM, intuition. Would hose an eventual unbanned survival.

Right. I guess "if your opponent sacrificed a land this turn" may be a better conditional? Simpler to understand and work only against fetches, not with your own wastes.

Definitely better; it still seems too strong to me, but it's not so clear anymore. (WotC will not be printing strong land destruction like that any time soon.) There are many ways to force people to sac lands like Tectonic Break,Smallpox, Devastating Dreams, or Smokestack and conditional ones like Akki Blizzard Herder, Crack the Earth and your proposed card.

What could be maindeckable combo disruption for non-blue colors that fits into the color pie?

For white, I'm think about something like this:

Legendary Creature - Human Soldier
You may exile a white card from your hand rather than pay Pitch Thalia’s mana cost.
Flash
Vigilance
Noncreature spells cost :1: more to cast.

Well then, make a more fitting card that is

a) maindeckable
b) white to the core and doesn't play well with blue decks
c) T0 combo hate

Besides, how is cantrip hate a bad thing in a format absolutely dominated by cantrips? :eyebrow:

just wondering why it isn't x/4 for 4
For reference: Vine Dryad

I was thinking about 2/2 first strike, but that would have been too strong of a combat trick, which would have missed the main selling point disruption. 1 power because it shouldn't be an aggressive clock by itself. 3 toughness, so it can go into combat with 2/X creatures and survive common sweepers to force answer diversity (like AD) instead of catch-alls like Massacre.

Instead of flash, I would prefer something like "If ~ is in your opening hand, you may exile a white card from your hand to put it into play before the game starts." I also think the base casting cost is too low considering that it gives virtual card advantage.

Alternatively, how about a single shot version:

That would work, too, making it work a bit like a Leyline. Although that might be even stronger since they can't counter it and the flash part matters less and less the longer the game goes, because its stats aren't even that great.

It also doesn't generate virtual card advantage (since all spells are all castable with enough mana, unlike stuff like Chalice), it merely creates a tempo advantage, while you suffer from actual card disadvantage. Increasing the CC would probably make it too janky since all the common removal spells still deal with it.

The flash version has much better synergy with, and more vulnerability to 'the blue shell' because it works better with cantrips and because it is more counterable.

Well, I posted it in the B/R thread, I should probably post it here.

I think blue should have better card selection than the other colors, but I think right now it's too much better. So I tried to come up with some cards that would work for other colors.

My criteria were:
1) Cards must not be blue.
2) Cards must be 1cmc. Additional costs are acceptable, but only 1 mana.
3) Cards must synergize with non-blue shells better than the blue cantrip shell.

Criteria #3 can be difficult to quantify, but looking at what the cantrip shell is used for will help. Blue uses cantrips to find lands, threats, or counters, depending on what is needed at the time. If it does not find what it needs, it usually finds another cantrip to chain into what it wants. The key thing I focused on is that blue wants its cantrips to be able to find instants and sorceries, such as Bolt, Show and Tell, Force of Will, and other cantrips.

The first card that immediately came to mind was Grisly Salvage. This is exactly the kind of card I want Black/Green to have access to, but it breaks one of my criteria. I've always thought it was overcosted anyways, so here's what I came up with:

Sift the Muck :bg:
Instant
Reveal the top four cards of your library. You may put a creature or land card from among them into your hand. Put the rest into your graveyard.

I love Salvage-style digging, although with Delve, this card may be a bit too strong (might need to come down to 3 cards, or be a sorcery, or both!). As written, this curves nicely into a turn 2 Tasigur if you pitch all the cards, or feeds your Tarmogoyf. But most importantly, it can't find counterspells, additional cantrips, or most combo pieces.

###

One for Me :w:
Sorcery
Each player reveals the top three cards of their library. You may put a permanent you revealed this way into your hand. Then, each player may put a permanent which shares a type with yours into their hand. Each player puts all other cards revealed this way onto the bottom of their library in any order.

Its a little wordy, but it works. Playing off of White's "Some are more equal than others" theme, I really like how this card provides multiple options during resolution. Do you take a less powerful card because it keeps your opponent from drawing one or not? And that's assuming they even do draw a card with matching types.

###
This one is templated horribly, but I couldn't think of a good way to do it :/

Creative Gamble :r:
Instant
Look at the top 7 cards of your library. You may reveal a card which matches a card on the stack, then put that card into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

Feels pretty Red, with the copy ability. Assuming you are copying a spell you play 4 of, you've got slightly more than 1/3 chance to hit. Not great, but meh, whatcha gonna do?

Also, unrelated and just for fun, the return of Rebound prompted this one:

"matches a card on the stack" should probably be "shares a card type with a spell". I think "instant or sorcery" might be a better fit since it's red, and it avoids the 'can I search for an instant on an empty stack?" rules question. Also, this is OP.

Yeah, it was definitely the weakest of the three. Honestly I only had the first two and felt like I should suggest a red one also. I don't think red actually needs cantrips though.

As far as the white template goes, the only thing that was wrong with my templating was the third sentence, which should read:

I forgot to specify that they can only put their own cards into their hands xD.

Monolith that help you if you went second:

Jade monolith ETB tapped unless you control no other permanents and your opponent control at least 1 permanent.
Mox Gem doesn't untap during your untap step.
2: untap Mox Gem.
T: add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool.

And a very old design by me, another "fair" moxen:

Null Gem 0
Artifact
Counter all spell you control.
T: add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool. Spells that used this mana can't be countered (boseiju wording i can't remember)

Basically a play 1 spell per turn mox, and no other 0 mana spell or pitch spells either. I think it would still be used in some decks like D&T and fair decks in general as a singleton.
