Erayo, soratami ascendant

Just minor question since i had one angry discussion here.

His flipping ability says:

"Whenever the Fourth spell of turn is played, turn erayo..." and so on.

Some people argued that he has to be in play, and 4 spells have to be played after he enters battlefield.

For example I play 2 spells, Erayo and fourth spell. I believe that erayo will flip, my opponents dont.

Also what will happen if my opponent responds on fourth spell with his first spell in a turn. I believe that I will play my spell (fourth of turn), erayo will automatically flip upon playing and the first spell of my opponent will be countered. Some of my opponents argued that they respond on erayos flipping ... here I am not sure, I think someone mentioned that flipping does not use stack...

You are correct.


The game looks back in time to count spells played that turn. So if this card is the third played in the turn, then when you play one more there will have been four and it will trigger. It cannot, however, trigger on itself being the fourth since it will not be in play at the time that spell is played. [D'Angelo 2007/09/08]

But to be honest...

If i play Erayo as for example seventh spell in a turn.. he will not flip, since his ability waits exactly for the FOURTH spell.

The flipping is a trigger. So it can be responded and even stifled.

Erayo has to be in play when the fourth spell is played, not for the first three. If Erayo itself is the fourth or more spell, it will not trigger. Also, Erayo has to be flipped when your opponent's first spell is played in order to trigger. Since flipping Erayo is a triggered ability, your opponent can respond with his first spell, and it will not be countered, because Erayo is still unflipped until the triggered ability resolves.
