View Full Version : Most Bizarre Local Meta

I'd like to hear from some people out there who have just truly remarkable local metas. I mean weird or interesting metas with zero thresh, zero Zoo, and a sea of five 43 lands and three Enchantress players. Is your local meta filled with endless stax mirror matches? Is your only deck Dragon Stompy and you just moved to a new town with Pox vs Angel Stompy in every pairing? Did it evolve to become the monster it currently is or was it just the right combination of people to randomly play certain decks. My local meta is slightly weird, so I'll start off with that one, but I'd be interested in hearing from some more outlandish metas!

My weekly legacy meta usually gets 8-10 people and the consistent decks are:
Ichorid
Ichorid
TES
Charbelcher
White Stax
Affinity
Death and Taxes
Sometimes Dreadstill
...and me as Zoo (poor me)

For some odd reason we have a perfect representation of every deck each week even counting people switching off decks. It's weird how it works out. Depending on who brings what for the week, it will end up being only one of each of these decks, but not all at once. Oddly, not many people can build the thresh variants.

If you ever wanted to know what wins against what, we pretty much can tell you based on tons of games played.

1 Canadian Thresh
1 Ad Nauseum Storm
1 Goblins
1 Survival
1 Countertop Goyf
1 White Stax
1 Meathooks
1 Faeries
1 Merfolk
1 Reanimator
1 Lorescale Gro
1 Faerie Stompy
1 Enchantress
1 Astral Slide
1 Team America
1 Eva Green
1 Fetchland Tendrils
1 Goyfsligh
1 43 Land
1 Landstill
1 richman.dec (the white stax with 4 moats/4 Humility/Elspeth etc)
1 Deadguy Ale (yup, still kicking)
1 Zoo
1 Dark Depths (New!)

My area used to be every established deck you could think of, but has fallen more into a lot of countertop, zoo, and dredge.

At the meandeck open I played:
r1 Faerie Sly (Ninja of the deep hours, ornithopter, standstill etc.)
r2 Mono Red Goblins
r3 Ichorid
r4 5c (Bitterblossom, Daze, Standstill, upheaval, Psychatog
D.R.O.P

Side Tourney
r1 Bant Tempo thresh ..

I was piloting landstill.. haha. Jokes for me's. Atleast I rocked the edh tables.

Triple Solidarity in a PTQ-sideevent of 24 players and I didn't even take part because I was busy Top8-ing the PTQ.

Must be my bad influence on the other players.

Oh yes and one of them ran a one-off Frantic Search in his 75...

That's weird. Everyone knows the only viable numbers for Frantic Search in Solidarity are either 0 or 6 (adding more would get noticed).

Elves, Goblins, Stax, and a deck with Ravenous Rats. Probably a total of three or four people around here even own Tarmogoyf.

Oh, and some guy played a port of that Type II Turbofog deck against me last week.

2x Dwarves
2x Rats
4x High Tide+Prosperity+Obstinate Familiar Combo
3x Relentless Rats Combo

Hard to break this Meta with Storm Combo. I think I'll change towards Cephalids, it should be enough to guarantee better Matchups.

I think in my local meta I am the only person playing anything above a tier 16 deck, I seriously think some of the damn red necks asses that show up don't even have a computer. This is how bad it is top 4 last week.

1.) Me-Solidarity (because they bitch about Japanese Goblins)
2.) Slivers running 5 color with Queen, Legion, and overlord
3.) some kind of deck running kobalds and other 0 cost creatures and the artifact that lets you return a creature to your hand when you play a creature for large storm counts. ( I think this could be a better deck with tweaking and a proper pilot)
4.) Elfs not any standard list just seems like a bunch of elves piled toghether.

Lets see....Our meta is very small considering most shops don't run tourneys for Legacy and the ones that do are in locations that are too remote for some of our players. So our events can range anywhere from 8 to 15+ players, depending on the day and who was in what area and decided to stop in.

The Core 8-

1: Homebrew style Fetchland AdN.
1-2: White Stax
1-2: Mono-R Burn/Sligh
1: U/G Natural Order deck.
1: Guy that plays Zoo or a Rock style deck usually
1: G/w Secret Force
1: W/u Rebel Still (or whatever people loan him)
1: Rogue master- Everything from Sliver Zoo, to Speed Black, to Mono-G LD, or Reanimator.

That's a typical week. Some of the players, despite having a deck they play a lot, will just pull shit of left field every now and again. I had just gotten used to the one playing Reanimator and he pulls out a speed black list that beat the shit out of me in finals with Cursed Scrolls, Shadow Creatures, Discard, and Bloodchief Ascension. It's crazy how quick a deck with evasive creatures and cursed scroll can get bloodchief online.

That's a fucked up meta. 3 Nourishing Lich >_< What the hell is Pitch World? I love how all these random and bad decks are not 1 ofs, like Magic Fanatic's group o' hicks throwing random shit together. These people seem to choose deck types that just suck. Dwarves?! XD I'm really curious about the High Tide, Prosperity, Obstinate Familiar fame. 4 of! Wow. You get the gold IMHO.

However, I'm going to one of swedens largest legacy tournaments this weekend, can report how the meta was there :)

This thread is made for the supergames meta! Last night I actually watched Ultimate Walker vs Enchantress (I have a pic of this one, ha!) while Life.dec played against Eva. Their was also a Dream Halls deck and an Entomb/Reanimator/Painter/Grind deck in attendance.

2 weeks ago Pitch World was played....thanks Pulp.

That said, we also have many competitive decks. But It can be tough to play countertop effectively when your opponent is dropping 4cc Treefolk....

I was actually at a small 20-person tournament in Uppsala a couple of weeks ago and the meta was quite healthy. There was a core of about 40% of the top Force of Will decks, a couple of Goblin players, plus a good selection of tier 1.5/2 decks: Stax, Enchantress, Elves, Rock, Suicide, etc.. And for the fun factor, a homebrew Replenish/Opalescence was matched twice against Humility decks.

(For the record: brought the ol' DStompy, lost to the same Merfolk player once in the Swiss and once in the Top 4, won yjr pyjth six matches vs. 2 Goblins, CTop, Thrash, Stax, Elves!)

I might attend another tournament in Stockholm on the 15th, since I'm in the capital the night before for a Pain of Salvation release concert. I'll see what they play there.
