Anyone have any stories? Myself and a group of friends are thinking of drafting an older set (either Homelands or Fallen Empires).
Thoughts?
Sets before Tempest weren't designed to be drafted. Drafting them probably won't lead to a fun experience.

I know. a third option would be Mercadian Masques sealed, but that seems like it would be a train wreck.
The entire point is to do it with a bad set.

I drafted alliances block post coldsnap. It was actually pretty fun aside from the fact that nobody knew the cards and it took like 2 hours to draft.

Just Do like 4 packs or random older sets, Could be fun. Like 1 pack or mirage, one of tempest, etc etc. Could be fun, at least there wouldnt be many and really luck intensive on who has teh best deck.

I really want to do Homelands due to the crap value of it. And I could draft Thunder Bluffs

Some of my friends drafted MI/MI/MI. They said it sucked.

One time my friends and I did a Kamigawa, Homelands, Unhinged draft.
I won a game by Shrinking an Iwamori.
I;ve done a few Masques, Champions, Shards Drafts, that was pretty cool.

One of the guys is suggesting Champions x3. I think I'd rather kill myself personally. I really hate the Kamigawa Block. Except Jitte. He can stay.

None of the formats listed above are as bad as 3x Legions.

What is that, like...
half-assed Slivers vs Smother.dec?

Aeopile or whatever the fuck that card is called is your best friend. Also, iirc, Thallids are broken. Draft Thallid.

I won a 3x planar chaos draft by picking up six sinew slivers. Half-assed slivers works beautifully.

Legions = all creatures. Every deck is morph.dec

I did a triple homelands draft once. One of my friends blows so much money on bad things, like $60 homeland booster boxes.
Anyways, not only was the set not designed for drafting, but the rarity distribution is really weird, so there are about ten billion of some commons. Anaba Shaman and Aysen Bureaucrats are extremely strong since there is very little removal, if you do HHH, I'd try for RW.
By the way, it was fun for about five minutes. It felt like drafting any other set, in a sense, but it felt like your deck was terrible and depressing.

Agree. 3x Legions was the worst experience ever. Much worse than triple Scourge, where rarely anyone does anything for the first 5 turns... that 1/1 for 8 mana was a house in that set though

Force red in triple-Mirage at all costs. Incinerate AND Torch AND Spitting Earth at common?! Both green and black make excellent pairings for red. Pray for Savage Twister.
The worst draft format is probably triple Torment, honestly.

I've done a FE/FE/FE/FE/FE (that's right, you need six packs to draft FE) before. Here's the important notes:
Blue and Red both suck ass. Ignore them.
Black has Hymn and Pump Knights. Pump Knights are good. The rest of the cards are pretty weak.
White is good. It also has Pump Knights, and it has Icatian Javelineers. They're insane. So is Icatian Infantry. So is the whole Icatian tribe, really.
Green has thallids. And let's be honest, in a set where Order of Leitbur is a bomb, thallids are insane. Elvish Hunter is pretty good. Night Soil is pretty good - it's Necrogenesis, kinda. Thelonite Druid can be a blowout.
Artifacts - Aelopile, obv. First pick. All the other ones are pretty bad.
The lands all suck except the GG one, which powers out your expensive Thallids.

I drafted triple torment once years ago and it turned me off to drafting. So now I never draft.

I drafted Revised once, it was pure garbage, and it doesn't help that there are approx 3 basic lands per pack. The playables dry up fast, and removal and huge guys are first picks. Craw wurm FTW! It's also wise to play 18 or 19 lands in your 40, as it's better to hit your few large threats on curve than to add the 2 filler cards to play a 'proper' 17/23 split. Scryb sprites will get there, as will most creatures with evasion in limited formats without much. Leaping lizards rein supreme in homelands, and abby matron blocks for days with that fat ass!
Tempest is supposedly very fun to draft, probably the only pre-urza set I would consider drafting in the future. (whoops on rolling thunder being a COMMON! Way to test this set for limited wizards!) Searing touch and the other buyback spells are also insane.

I drafted Alpha yesterday. If you're going to do it too, just an advice: pick P9s.

If you play FE, thallids have to be avoided at all costs, they are unplayable BUT overdrafted by all those that think they are good. The best deck is black with pump knights and hymn to tourach. The enchantment that creates thrulls is also really good. White is also very good. Red is unplayable unless you play with a fake coin, otherwise the only good cards are goblin grenade and the enchantment that puts goblins into play.
The worst set to draft is Prophecy, ugh. It's so bad it hurts.

Do we have any third-set-of-block yet where black is grotesquely overpowered? Because then you could draft Urza's Saga + Torment + that set.

The best is highlander draft.
24 unique packs. Everyone gets in a line and drafts the packs going 1-8 8-1 1-8 or something along those lines. Then draft and see what weird stuff happens.

For limited, there's Eventide. But red was really nasty there too

Red was berserk in Eventide: Flame Jab, in a format defined by 2cc 2/1s, zomg. Plus the wither burn spell.
Triple-Eventide was fun for awhile, but it got old because it was so fast. Limited decks that can semi-regularly kill on turn 4/5 are pretty nutty.
