View Full Version : [ Deck ] Mono Brown Metalworker

Hey, I've been testing a different build using the Metalworker/Staff Combo. I run a Mono Brown list, and it's been having a promising showing. The hardest matches so far in testing have been aggro decks with burn and aggro decks with counters. The SB mostly reflects this problem but pulling that game 2 & 3 is tough. Still, it's a blast and any help would be appreciated.
// Lands
4 [EX] City of Traitors
3 [DS] Darksteel Citadel
4 [MM] Rishadan Port
4 [TE] Wasteland
4 [AQ] Mishra's Factory (4)
4 [TE] Ancient Tomb
// Creatures
4 [UD] Metalworker
2 [UD] Masticore
// Spells
4 [EX] Sphere of Resistance
4 [FD] Crucible of Worlds
3 [FD] Staff of Domination
4 [US] Smokestack
4 [NE] Tangle Wire
4 [DS] Trinisphere
4 [MR] Chalice of the Void
4 [SH] Mox Diamond
// Sideboard
SB: 3 [SOK] Pithing Needle
SB: 3 [UL] Defense Grid
SB: 4 [DK] Tormod's Crypt
SB: 4 [SH] Ensnaring Bridge
SB: 1 [UD] Masticore
I'm playing the complete sets of both Tangle Wire/Smokestack & Trinisphere/Sphere of resistance and it's been working so far. It's fantastic against combo and control (especially on the play) but the hybrids give it a hard time as I mentioned above.
Card Choices
Manabase 31 : Most of my manabase shouldn't be up for much debate, other then Darksteel Citadel. I included it because I honestly couldn't think of anything better to add, and it being an artifact land helps. Sometimes I feel like I could use another mana source in the deck, and a 4th Citadel makes sense to me. (*I classify Metalworker as both a win condition and a mana source)
4 [SH] Mox Diamond
4 [EX] City of Traitors
3 [DS] Darksteel Citadel
4 [MM] Rishadan Port
4 [TE] Wasteland
4 [AQ] Mishra's Factory (4)
4 [TE] Ancient Tomb
* 4 [UD] Metalworker
Disruption 20 : I am playing with 4 copies of everything because I'm not sure what to drop, and I wanted to test full sets out. When I board, I usually take out 1 Smokestack & 1 Tangle Wire for some SB cards so maybe those are the weakest cards (the 4th Stack & 4th Wire).
4 [EX] Sphere of Resistance
4 [US] Smokestack
4 [NE] Tangle Wire
4 [DS] Trinisphere
4 [MR] Chalice of the Void
Win Conditions 9 : With no way to tutor into the Staff I chose to run 3 over 2 but haven't tested 4. Not only does holding two suck, but there just isn't space in the deck for 4. I added Masticore because of all the creatures in Legacy, choosing it over Razormane Masticore and Karn. I tested both Karn and Razor, and settled on Masticore because it is an absolute must counter for a lot of decks in Legacy.
* 4 [UD] Metalworker
3 [FD] Staff of Domination
2 [UD] Masticore
Utility 4 : While I realize that running 4 Crucibles is redundant, it's mostly acceptable to run the set. I personally feel that I could stand to drop one, because I usually SB our 2 of these (along with a Smokestack and a Tangle Wire) to bring cards in game 2 and 3.
4 [FD] Crucible of Worlds
The SB 15 : The slot I've toyed the most with are the 4 Ensnaring Bridges. I've tested Jesters Caps, Meekstone and Powder Keg in the slot and I'm still not sure what to change. Powder Keg would be the decks only read answer to permanents besides Smokestack, but it hurt a LOT more then it helped sometimes.
SB: 3 [SOK] Pithing Needle
SB: 3 [UL] Defense Grid
SB: 4 [DK] Tormod's Crypt
SB: 4 [SH] Ensnaring Bridge
SB: 1 [UD] Masticore
I've had the biggest problem with specific cards, mostly Back to Basics, Pernicious Deed and Ancient Grudge. ANY help on that would just be awesome. Also, any advice or bashing is also welcome.
Damn... you really read this far huh

Against Aggro, I would say that Solemn Arbiter is the best. I would replace the Masticore with him MD.
In general, I think that Metalworker is not combo with Ensnaring Bridge or Masticore. That's a problem according to me.

A Silent Arbiter probably won't kill someone, tho. In the matches where I boarded the Ensnaring Bridges in to stop aggro, I just held them back and kept dropping top decked disruption pieces and eventually a Staff. That's why I've been testing Karn and Masticore, because both those can still eventually attack. Of course, they Board in Grips... so having to reply on 4 cards vs their 4 cards isn't feeling great in the post board games.
I'll pop a Silent Arbiter into the SB and test that out vs the pure aggro decks I face. One in the board would really help. If I drop the Bridges from the board what would you recommend replacing them with?

Maze of Ith. Nice idea, I'm going to definitely test this out.
I'll get back at you.

Shouldn't you include some kind of "I can kill you the turn I combo amok" card?
It just seems so lame to be producing 10 billion life, drawing your library and beeing able to cast all your spells, but still having to say "go" when you're done touching yourself...
Include a rocket launcher or something - I know it is not all that on paper, and until you asemble and use your combo it's not that good, but still?
Bad idea?

I don't resist to post (again) my (almost) monobrown Metalworker list.
I play it in this list. It's aggro-combo. It still needs a lot of tuning.
// Lands (22 not much, but I play a lot of mana providers)
1 [TSP] Academy Ruins
4 [MR] Seat of the Synod
4 [AQ] Mishra's Factory (3)
4 [MI] Island (1)
4 [TE] Wasteland
4 [TE] Ancient Tomb
1 [DS] Blinkmoth Nexus
// Creatures (utility creatures)
4 [MR] Solemn Simulacrum (CA and mana development)
4 [UD] Metalworker (a lot of mana!)
3 [CS] Arcum Dagsson (tutor)
4 [FD] Trinket Mage (chalice, mana development and equipment, all 3 are very important)
2 [CFX] Master Transmuter (tricks)
// Spells
1 [FD] Crucible of Worlds
2 [US] Smokestack
1 [FD] Staff of Domination (just one to be tutored, I don't want to rely too muck on metalworker)
4 [MR] Chalice of the Void
4 [DS] Trinisphere
4 [SH] Mox Diamond
1 [ALA] Sigil of Distinction (tutorable stuff with trinket and kill in the turn once staff+metalworker online)
1 [BOK] Umezawa's Jitte
1 [DS] Sword of Light and Shadow
1 [DS] Sword of Fire and Ice
1 [7E] Ensnaring Bridge
// Sideboard
SB: 1 [BOK] Umezawa's Jitte
SB: 1 [DS] Sword of Light and Shadow
SB: 1 [DS] Sword of Fire and Ice
SB: 2 [M10] Pithing Needle
SB: 4 [MM] Rishadan Port (against and for mana denial)
SB: 1 [CH] Tormod's Crypt
SB: 3 [FD] Silent Arbiter (deals with swarms)
SB: 2 [ALA] Relic of Progenitus
Creatures are utility, CA and equipment carriers. Be prepared to see Metalworker die. That's not an issue at all. It's just a card saying answer me or die. During this time you expand and you take advantage on the board. I like a lot how the deck can change game plan.
Master Transmuter is the weak slot. Maybe silent arbiter MD instead would be fine.

If you want to do a more mono-brown aggro strategy, use Gathan Raiders.

If you want to do a more mono-brown aggro strategy, use Gathan Raiders.
Gathan Raiders is 2 for 1, and in this deck you never want to have a empty hand (and rarely have).
Instead of Master transmuter, it could be Faerie Mechanist, Master of Etherium or Scarecrone.

I'd never run less than 4 MoE - seriously that thing wins more games than metalworker by it's lonesies, and whilst it won't be as big as in affinity it coms online sooner and has more protection. On the fence about the other blue artifact creatures in general and Trinket Mage in particular though. The manabase can't really be relied on to provide blue early enough, and it limits the amount of creatures you can regurgigate on the table with an early Metalworker, they're not good beaters and their abilities not that impressive considering their cost. Also generally not an issue, but remmeber that whatever manlands you've got on the table can pump themselves stupid big before swinging should you manage to combo out, so Sigil isn't necessary with them. Not that Su-Chi is all that good in the spot, but it's a rather beefy beater without a drawback and has got some synergy with Arcum. Also neat with Scarecrone.
Oh, and Darksteel Forge is motherfucking TECH. Cements winning boards positions like vulcanized superglue and provides you with unremovable blockers in the bad ones.

No Beseech the Queen seems weak, as does the lack of Flame Javelin. You can play them for a higher cost on the brown side. Also, in the 'U' listm why not add Stroke of Genius to the deck as the kill?

If you want to go for the less aggro route, You could always include a Painter's Servant/Grindstone combo. Both are artifacts, and its always nice to have the random "I Win" on turn two.

Indeed. I like a lot your list too. I'd play rishdan ports instead of some city of traitors and maybe 1 manaland. I miss the smokestack plan which was awesome with creatures with card advantage (trinket and solemn). As far as I could test, the weakness of the deck were not aggro decks, but control decks, so that I'm not sure I need bigger steacks.
Master transmuter was clearly weak and it needed to be changed with something else. Master would be a nice option. I would need to find 2 more slots for Master, probably cutting 1 trinket and 1 stax.

I believe that this deck is for MUD discussions, not blue-based versions. Regardless I was keeping my version of MUD secret but since it hasn't worked out too well, I'll post it up:
4 [EX] City of Traitors
3 [MI] Crystal Vein
2 [DS] Darksteel Citadel
4 [MM] Rishadan Port
4 [TE] Wasteland
4 [AQ] Mishra's Factory (4)
4 [TE] Ancient Tomb
// Creatures
4 [UD] Metalworker
4 [UD] Painter's Servant
// Spells
4 [EX] Sphere of Resistance
4 [FD] Crucible of Worlds
3 [FD] Staff of Domination
4 [US] Grindstone
4 [DS] Trinisphere
4 [MR] Ensnaring Bridge
4 [SH] Winter Orb
// Sideboard
SB: 3 [SOK] Pithing Needle
SB: 4 [UL] Defense Grid
SB: 4 [DK] Tormod's Crypt
SB: 4 [SH] Powder Keg
Things I realized was a mistake: Not playing Chalice in the MD. However, I was playing Grindstone combo. The deck is excellent at stalling, and getting either Staff or Grindstone combo win. Ensnaring Bridge was maindecked to deal with the deck's weakest matchups: Aggro. It was a decent deck but I didn't like the way it played. Very often I felt that if I topdecked 4 lands in a row, I would lose.
I think MUD Prison is the way to go but I'm more than tempted to start playing Red/Blue splashes simply because they offer more powerful cards. I like your MUD list a lot but I'm not sure about Mox Diamond. It seems really bad after a Sphere but I can see how it's important for a faster Metalworker/Trinisphere. I ran 3 Veins to up the fast 2cc first turn plays and they can be recurred via crucible.

WTF with not playing chalice and mox diamond??? I'd play maze/tabernacle in this too rather than 4*bridge (1 is good though) and 4*mishra. The leyline/helm combo seems better to win once you did the combo with metalworker and staff. Leyline is clearly a dead draw, but it's good in almost all MUs in opening hand and with mox diamond you'll be able to cast it after comboing. If you really prefer the painter/stone combo, you could just add 1 keg in MD that would get rid of chalices after MW/staff combo.
Lands/Mox 28
4 [EX] City of Traitors
4 [MM] Rishadan Port
4 [TE] Wasteland
4 [TE] Ancient Tomb
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4 Maze
2 tabernacle
4 Mox Diamond
// Creatures 4
4 [UD] Metalworker
// Spells 28
4 Leyline
4 Helms
4 Chalice
4 [EX] Sphere of Resistance
3 [FD] Crucible of Worlds
4 [FD] Staff of Domination
2 [DS] Trinisphere
3 [SH] Winter Orb
What do you think?

Mono Brown Stax just won a 71 player tournament in Italy. Maybe you guys might be interested in the list:
creature [7]
3 Metalworker
4 Simian Spirit Guide
artifact [28]
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Crucible of Worlds
3 Ensnaring Bridge
4 Mox Diamond
4 Smokestack
1 Staff of Domination
4 Tangle Wire
4 Trinisphere
land [25]
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
3 Crystal Vein
1 Gods' Eye, Gate to the Reikai
3 Maze of Ith
4 Mishra's Factory
2 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
4 Wasteland
60 cards
Sideboard:
1 Platinum Angel
3 Silent Arbiter
3 Pithing Needle
3 Powder Keg
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Tormod's Crypt
1 Plains
15 cards
I picked it up for some random MWS games and really liked it. The coolest thing you can do is win turn 2 with Metalworker, Staff of Domination and a non-summoning sick Mishra's Factory.

Sorry for the necro, but with so many colorless cards in Rise of the Eldrazi I think maybe it's time to take our metalworkers out.
Tinkering a little with this list: http://www.deckcheck.net/deck.php?id=29375 I finally came to this:
24 Lands
4 Ancient Tomb
3 City of Traitors
4 Mishra's Factory
4 Wasteland
4 Rishadan Port
2 Horizon Canopy
2 Maze of Ith
1 Gods' Eye, Gate to the Reikai
5 Creatures
1 Karn, Silver Golem
4 Metalworker
31 Others
4 Chalice of the void
4 Crucible of worlds
4 Mox diamond
4 Ensnaring Bridge
3 Powder Keg
3 Smokestack
3 Tangle Wire
3 Trinisphere
3 Staff of Domination
60 Total
Then, a Rise of Eldrazi card I would like to include is "All is dust" because have a reset button always is good in control decks, and much better this one that don't affects your permanents.
Then another card I would like to fit in is "Emrakul the Aeon Torns", so when you go off, you could search for him and play him FTW. In my opinion seems better than play all the artifacts you draw and try to kill with karn the next turn.
So, I'm thinking of this changes:
-3 Powder Keg
+1 Tangle Wire (to win time)
+2 All is dust
-1 Karn, Silver golem
+1 Emrakul, Aeon of Torns
-4 Rishadan Port
+2 Eldrazi Temple
+2 Eye of Ugin
Thoughs?

I guess I'm necroing but I thought I'd mention something anyway : Goblin Cannon should be added as a one of since it's wording lets you win the turn you combo out with Metal Worker and Staff of Domination. You just activate it 19 times in response to it's first activation and viola 20 damage to the opponent's face.
Edit : Rocket Launcher was mentioned but Goblin Cannon is strictly better.

How about making it more like combo mud by adding stuff like an extra karn, rings of brightheart, bassalt monolith, SDT, goblin canon, and that equipment thingy that says :2:/:3: untap: equiped creature gets +3+3/+2+2 and only runs some sphere's + lodestone golem for disruption while making is redicilously dense on combo stuff en synergy

I finally quit karn and tested with Banefire since we could play mox and get the R. Thoughts?

I wouldn't add Banefire, you don't need it. When you combo out, you'll draw your whole deck and make a billion mana. At that point all your one of(s) come online, or 2x of your win condition. Your win conditions could stay mono brown, like Magma Mine and Goblin Cannon.
I like 'Sphere' effects to slow down other combo decks and with that being said, be careful with Mox Diamond. She doesn't play well with Sphere effects. But if I were to deviate from mono-brown, I'd be splashing blue just to find my combo pieces. I've been tinkering with mono-brown stompy for months, but I just started on metalworker combo so we'll just see how this goes.
Also, I don't get the obsession with Karn? Is he just a holdover from the Type1 MUD decks? He makes sense in Vintage, as he rapes half the good cards, but I do not see his place in Legacy. Maybe it depends on your meta.

I'm new to this thread but I've always been thinking how to play Mono Brown Stax (it might include blue ;))
My idea would be a list like:
Land [28]
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
4 Crystal Vein
4 Maze of Ith
4 Mishra's Factory
4 Wasteland
4 Rishadan Port
More mana [8]
4 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Mox Diamond
Disruption[24]
4 Sphere of Resistance
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Tangle Wire
4 Trinisphere
4 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Smokestack
Creatures[8]
4 Lodestone Golem
4 Metalworker
Combo+Utility[5-7]
2-3 Staff of Domination
2-3 Crucible of Worls
1 Banefire
As you see there are too many nice cards to stall the opponent from removal spells, so we have just to fear the first counters. I'm not sure what to cut.Maybe the first-drop creature protection (Mishra's+Maze of Ith)? 1 Metalworker? And I'm also not sure which Disruption is the best...

atm I'm running the following list:
4x metalworker
4x lodestone golem
4x su-chi
3x razormane masticore
1x karn, silver golem
2x umezawa's jitte
3x sword of fire and ice
4x chalice of the void
4x sphere of resistance (cumulative with lodestone golem)
3x crucible of worlds
4x mox diamond
4x crystal vein
4x ancient tomb
4x city of traitors
4x wasteland
4x mishra's factory
4x open slot for utility land, (atm rishadan port, but could also become darksteel citadel, or blinkmoth nexus. But I like mana denial more)
sideboard:
4x pithing needle (you don't want to see deed)
4x powder kegg
4x tormod's crypt
3x winter orb
Atm I'm happy with how the deck preform's, and prefer sphere of resistance over trinisphere since the effect's cumulative with lodestone golem, AND it's easier to play in the first turn.

With the addition of blue you could put nice cards like wash out that is like a "Wrath" effect against a lot of decks (do not forget that affects progenitus and Iona) the problem I see is that lacks of draw power. Maybe we could fit space for some Bottle cloister...
just out of curiosity why don't you play Thoughtcast when you spalsh U ?

I think you'd run Ebridge + Blottled cloister. It's awesome. Gives cards to worker and stops aggro. I was testing list with incredible results running this and banefire. Probably i'll add emrakul too.
The only problem i've seem is cracking enchants (i don't run stacks) but i think aniquilator will do it well.

I agree on the Karn thing , and honestly I'm pretty sure everyone is just looking towards whatever they want to use , since they can use anything post combo . The question becomes whats the most useful win condition PRE combo then that also wins immediatly most combo . You cant really rely on the new ROE cards since you wont have the mana pre combo at all .
Anyone have any thought on the stronest 1x or 2x finisher for post combo that is still a good card precombo ?

Making the space for those cards means dropping a few sphere effects . OR dropping something else , like the trini's . Trini feels like the 2nd strongest play in this deck with metalworker being a house if he goes active.

Karn's appeal is that he makes all your utility artifacts into beatsticks as well.
Trinisphere, Crucible, Tangle Wire, Sword of Fire and Ice, Staff of Domination all double as 3/3 beaters (and blockers in a pinch).
Jitte doubles as a 2/2 beater.
Smokestack, Uba Mask etc double as 4/4 beaters.
Karn itself can double as an 0/8 wall in a pinch.
Plus, it can be used to kill the occasional Chrome Mox, Tormod's Crypt or Mox Diamond.
This can be very handy, especially if your deck is light on beaters and heavy on utiltiy cards.

Reading the line of this topic i feel that everyone is putting together all artifacts viable in a stax deck and that's it.
We all know that MW + SoD = cream, but the problem is consistency. MW is a weak axis. so i made a control/combo list with dynamo thran:
// Lands
1 [6E] Crystal Vein / Darksteel citadel
2 [FUT] Horizon Canopy
1 [WWK] Eye of Ugin?
4 [TE] Ancient Tomb
4 [EX] City of Traitors

3 [WWK] Lodestone Golem
4 [UD] Metalworker
1 [ROE] Emrakul, the aeons torn
// Spells
4 [FD] Crucible of Worlds
2 Staff of domination
1 [CFX] Banefire
3 [UD] Thran Dynamo
4 [SH] Mox Diamond
3 [REW] Powder Keg
3 [SH] Ensnaring Bridge
4 [MR] Chalice of the Void

I'm working on a monobrown stax list since the unban of the MW. I played it the first time in a 40 people event but I dropped while I was 0-4-0. I don't remember my list but the main wincon was MW+Staff and banefire for an "instant" kill. I played against Elves (with 8 disenchant effect MD! 1-0, 0-1-0), Aggro Loam (bad luck in G1, mull to 3 in G2 2-0, 0-2-0), White Stax (1-2, 0-3-0) and Enchantress (2-0, 0-4-0).
After months of testing I played a better version of my Staker list, cutting mW and totally changing my wincon in a 19 players tournament, closing 3rd.
T1. Dreadstill UGR (0-2, 0-1-0)
T2. bye (2-0, 1-1-0)
T3. Monoblack (2-0, 2-1-0)
T4. Supreme Blue (2-0, 3-1-0)
T5. MOST (survival based) (ID, 3-1-1)
Top8 T1. Affinity (2-0, 4-1-1)
Top8 T2. ProBant (1-2, 4-2-1)
Then we decided to play for the 3rd/4th prize
