This is a really noobie question, I know, but I don't feel like digging through the specific wording of Kicker, and I'm sure it'll get a fast reply.

Let's say I cast Burst Lightning and pay the kicker. Can Counterbalance counter it by revealing a 1cc spell, or does it need to reveal a 5cc spell? This also applies to Chalice.

1 cc. Kicker is an additional cost similar to the sacrifice on natural order

Just to add from the rules:

702.30a Kicker is a static ability that functions while the spell is on the stack. "Kicker [cost]" means "You may pay an additional [cost] as you cast this spell." The phrase "Kicker [cost 1] and/or [cost 2]" means the same thing as "Kicker [cost 1], kicker [cost 2]." Paying a spell's kicker cost(s) follows the rules for paying additional costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2e-g.
