View Full Version : Why is Undiscovered Paradise suddenly so expensive?

I'm guessing Landfall has effected it's desirability, but are casual players that interested? It is selling for around $15+ each on ebay. 2-3 weeks ago you could pick up a set for less than $15. And apparently in France, it's going for even more (http://cgi.ebay.com/Undiscovered-Paradise-Paradis-Inconnu-MTG-Hot-NO-Mox_W0QQitemZ270488044113QQcmdZViewItemQQptZFR_JG_Collections_Cartes_de_Collection?hash=item3efa580251).

Thank you. It seems that Americans pay attention to birthdays. You are the second who realizes it's today.

Did Goyf spike in price recently? It's back up to $60 at StarCityGames. Is it because of the Legacy events in 2010? Is he good in Extended? I feel like he was down to around $35 for a while.

yes you're right, this summer he was just 35 at starcity, after zendikar prices are going nuts for some wierd reason... just use baneslayer as a meter

Holy shit! That's just ridiculous for an extended legal card to be up at $60!

It had been down, yeah. But Legacy is getting bigger and Extended is starting to come back into focus. The price was only temporarily lowered as T2 players were unloading theirs when Alara was rotating in, but that's a year ago now.

No, it's not good in Extended, you are imagining things.

...

What's Extended anyway?

Holy fuck... That's what I get for thinking I could slack off on getting Tarmogoyfs and wait for a price drop. I mean they ARE gonna drop when it rotates out of Extended presumably, right???

by 5 dollars? when extended rotates out- if you want to wait that long that is. =D

I definitely think Goyf is an anomaly to the norm. I hope he gets reprinted over and over and over again, because I think that's the only way he's going to go down at all. I'm with DDK, I had been waiting until they went down, but now I'm not so sure. Silly me thought $30 was crazy, and now this.

I remember back in the day Undiscovered Paradise was a $15 card, and then it fell off the map, and now it's back. I don't think too many cards get new life that often, but it has been kind of a trend lately, hasn't it? Grindstone, Natural Order, Dark Depths, etc. all used to be mediocre and now have double digit prices. I just can't get my head around the fact that Cursed Scroll is a $6.00 card, Masticore $5 and Morphling about $9.00. I'm stuck in the year 2000 when those cards were bombs.

When did Tarmogoyf get so expensive? I feel like I just checked prices on magiccards.info quite recently and it was around $35 or so. Insanity.

Word. My teammate and I got 3 sets for 5 bucks each. Really sucks to be you unbelievers and skeptics.

It was even more satisfying beating hectics I knew at a tournament. Goyf had had some exposure to being good, and I thrashed the hell out of this Landstill deck piloted by a skeptic thanks to Goyfs. I mean, fucking thrash. We even had a point in the game where I had one Goyf as a blocker against an army of Monasteries.

They're never going to reprint goyf... i don't know how many people have to say this before people stop saying it but they've already said that goyf was a mistake.. personally i hate goyf, thats why i play everything non-goyf: landstill, tendrils, and solidarity- my anti-goyf

And I thought I was mad when I should have gotten them for dirt cheap way back when and I got them for $30 instead. Kind of makes me feel better now.

I got my BL in a booster. I win.

Seriously, every week this magic themed dick measuring discussion of who got their goyfs cheaper comes up. Aren't you tired of that?

I'll wait for it to get banned so I don't have to spend 60 bucks on it. Until them I'll keep playing Belcher.

Why, after rotating out of extended and standard, should goyf be allowed in the format it ruins the most?

Back to the discussion, I'm sure Undiscovered Paradise will be back to reasonable prices after everyone realizes how bad bloodghast is. This instant spike in price is people rushing and trying not to lose money on what could be the next Dreadnought or Grindstone. Fortunately Undiscovered Paradise is neither.

I believe him. I remember when FS first came out and foil Goyfs were going for $5 a peice at SCG.com for like 3 weeks strait.

@Goyf being good in Extended - They're starting to gain a lot more popularity in Vintage as well.

Because that has asolutely zero to do with how the bannings are decided ?

some youtube interview with Maro, but "mistake" is a summary of what he said really - more that they probably wouldn't have printed it like this in retrospect.

I beat all of you $22 total for a foil set (4 individual transactions), 10 for regular off starcity. I should have bought them all thought, thats my only regret.

yeah, but again, does anyone actually have a link to this or anything else. for a hundred years now I've seen every anti-goyfer say the card was a mistake and nobody can ever manage to come up with any proof. just a lot of talking out of each others asses.

How did you guys turn a question about the increase in undiscovered paradise into another stupid goyf thread.

You should have picked up Undiscovered Paradise and Ghost Town as soon as the landfall mechanic turned out to be good. The demand curve just shifted, and the price is going up. Enjoy.

Yeah, Bloodghast and Steppe lynx are kind of limited but they're good enough and fun enough to drive up the price of a rare most people have thrown in the trash, further increasing the rarity, in this crazy old game of paper crack...I mean Magic.

I got my recruiters when they were quarters. Har har har.

But, seriously, has anyone seen legacy cards go down in price? I mean, Grindstone is not a Tier-1 card, and it's $20. Dark Depths is $20. NO is $15 (this one is tier1, i guess). Heck, Reset is still ~$15, and Solidarity is what, Tier-10 now?

I think Undiscovered will be $15 for a long, long time. Maybe down to $10, but not below. Hope everyone has theirs.

Dark Depths is an Extended card that is sharing it's wealth with Legacy.

It haunts me to this day.

You don't even want me to get into the "stupid good deals" discussion. I think I could top just about everything. I'm damned near psychic it seems on accident.

Though I do admit the worst one. I remember the metal Bird of Paradise on Ebay and I passed on it since I had no clue what it was and I set my limit to $100 for it. It sold for 101.00 of course. I remember seeing the Metal Fork also.

I passed on a stack of Lotus artist proofs also since at the time they were practically worthless. It was a large enough stack to be all of them.

Occam
11-24-2009, 09:13 PM
While the metal cards cost quite a bit today, I wouldn't make any offers for them (even though I was tempted by the Hurloon Minotaur which moved within the last year) because it is reasonably easy to make fakes of those, and the questionable quality of the originals makes it hard to tell anyway.

I'm going to seek to correct my mistake regarding the efreet soon. It's going to hurt the wallet. :(

I've never heard of these metal cards, and Googling them in various phrases misdirects towars different card games. What are they?

They're basically test prints (and I use this phrase very loosely, because they weren't really test prints) that were etched in metal (aluminum I believe). Some have a much neater finish (something like Pickle's shivan) and seem to be factory made while others look messy and relatively amateurish. The latter are legit even though they can look fake, as I know that some Wizards employees had them previously. The problem is telling a fake apart from the real thing, and it isn't something I want to bet $1.5k-$2k on.

There are several of them -- birds (good shout for the most expensive birds around), bolt, shivan, fork, hurloon minotaur, dragon whelp etc.

Probably has something to do with bad players playing bad cards (bloodghast) in bad decks (bloodghast dredge). It also received a lot of hype. I mean it did well at SCG 5k. Guess nobody read the tourny report where it shows the deck faced no hate. You can take an extended dredge deck and it will win if it doesn't face hate.
